To develop world class infrastructure at the existing and new campuses of the Tata Institute of Social Sciences to facilitate academic excellence and research To develop world class infrastructure at the existing and new campuses of the Tata Institute of Social Sciences to facilitate academic excellence and research

From the Director s desk Dear esteemed partner, Greetings from the Tata Institute of Social Sciences! The Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) began its journey in 1936, as the Sir Dorabji Tata Graduate School of Social Work. This was the first institute of its kind in India, aiming to enable social development through social work education combined with visionary field action projects. Over the years, in responding to the changing needs of the society, we have diversified our activities beyond an initial mandate of social work education. Starting out as a small college of social work, we grew into a Deemed University in TISS is now recognised as a premier institute in India, producing professionals equipped with pioneering knowledge and skills in emerging and niche areas in the social sciences. An important catalyst for our success is the role of our educators and researchers. Higher education has to aim for the joint engagement of teachers, researchers and students to provide critical solutions for many acute social problems that persist across India. The TISS legacy includes democratising access to high-quality and relevant higher education in social sciences covering all social and economic groups in the country. In addition, TISS s role in the creation of knowledge, critical to developing evidence based policies and programmes, has become amplified in the past two decades. TISS has always believed in nurturing a diverse student body, attracting students and faculty from across the world. It reaches students from disadvantaged backgrounds, through active outreach and support. This student diversity is made possible through an entrance procedure administered in 20 centers across the country, creating increased accessibility for even far-flung locations. TISS currently offers 45 Masters programmes to over 1400 students, in fields ranging from social work to human resources management to habitat studies. The academic programme at the Institute is uniquely tailored, integrating practical training, in the form of fieldwork/internships with the classroom component, to create a knowledge base beyond textbooks. This creates a unique class of committed professionals who usually go on to make socially relevant career choices. In every class of graduating students, some decide to

take up community work at the grassroots level in difficult urban and rural terrains, in central India and the North East, for example, and for the last 3 years, TISS has been successful in creating fully funded 2 year fellowships that facilitate this work. TISS is uniquely positioned to open new frontiers of transdisciplinary knowledge in the social sciences, creating a generation of highly skilled and motivated social science professionals committed to building a thriving and sustainable society. A rapidly globalising world with ever-changing ecosystems brings to the fore the challenges that people face in accessing their rights and entitlements. This creates the need for knowledge leaders and thought leaders who offer innovative solutions to address these socio-economic challenges. There is an acute shortage of human resources who can make these social protection measures a reality for people. TISS, to meet this need for development professionals, has to develop world class infrastructure that facilitates delivery of its dynamic research, teaching and practice experience at a much larger scale. Upgrading the existing campus infrastructure of TISS in Mumbai and Tuljapur, and the creation of basic infrastructure in the new campuses in Guwahati and Hyderabad are an essential part of this mandate. We see this growth and transformation into a multi-location networked university as the next stride in our journey. TISS is uniquely placed as a critical catalyst in India s transformational vision for creating just and equitable communities. This enlarged canvas requires a rapid capacity building initiative to meet the growing needs of our society. Our mission is to grow by 4 times in terms of student capacity to 8000 students in the 12th plan period. I invite you, as individuals and institutions, to partner with us in our journey of expansion and transformation. We are initiating an extensive fundraising campaign, TISS Emerge towards showcasing ourselves as a premier social science institute in Asia. Join us in TISS Emerge and help us make the lives of millions of people a little better. Yours sincerely, Dr. S. Parasuraman, Director, Tata Institute of Social Sciences

The Tata Institute of Social Sciences is the country s premier school of social work and has been at the forefront of social change. TISS has graduated over 7000 students from various programmes since The institute has pioneered several courses and programmes and its scholars are deeply engaged in deep corners of the country working towards the upliftment of the underprivileged. Through the TISS Emerge Campaign the institute wishes to embark on an ambitious journey of transformation and growth. It has expanded into a networked university with three new campuses in Tuljapur, Hyderabad and Guwahati and seeks partners that will help raise the bar for the institute as a centre for excellence in academics, research and social development. A country in transition needs youth to be fully engaged in nation building and this campaign reaffirms the vision of TISS in nurturing a trained cadre of spirited and brave young people working shoulder to shoulder with communities in backward and challenging frontiers. Come be a part of the Emerge campaign and build a better future with us. S. Ramadorai, Chairperson, TISS Governing Board

young minds need nurturing to emerge as beacons of change as depicted in the Emerge logo, the TISS tree cultivating sparks of transformation TISS Emerge Campaign Tata Institute of Social Sciences has a legacy of 77 years of transformative education for addressing critical social issues that India has grappled with historically. TISS has been at the forefront of reimagining futures, creating a pool of skilled development sector professionals equipped to face the socio-economic challenges of India. We are happy to unveil TISS Emerge a campaign for expansion and transformation. We welcome you to reimagine futures with us.

Academics The Tata Institute of Social Sciences has dedicated schools and independent centres for various disciplines of the development sector. The schools foster a transdisciplinary approach in their teaching methodologies and are all rooted in the common vision of TISS. In addition, centres and field action projects are interlinked with various schools. The schools and independent centres of TISS are listed below. Schools Social Work Development Studies Health Systems Studies Management and Labour Studies Habitat Studies Media and Cultural Studies Law, Rights and Constitutional Governance Vocational Education Independent Centres Research Methodology Human Ecology Studies in the Sociology of Education Studies in Social Exclusion and Inclusive Policies Lifelong Learning Disaster Management TISS currently offers 45 Masters degree programmes which includes integrated M.Phil.- Ph.D. and direct Ph.D. programmes in a variety of subject areas Education, Health, Habitat Studies, Human Resources Management, Social Work, Development Studies, Women s Studies, Disaster Management, Social Entreprenuership, Public Policy and Rural Development. TISS offers a unique and innovative five-year integrated master s degree programme in Social Sciences where the first three years would be spent in gaining a liberal arts degree including physical and social sciences. TISS provides youth fellowships each year and mentors fresh graduates to work in challenging terrains and extremism affected districts. Each year over a thousand people are offered certificate and training programmes on a variety of sustainable development and governance issues at our remote field stations in Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Ladakh, Delhi, Vidarbha, Ranchi and Chennai.

Research The key significance of research in TISS lies in its application based orientation. Over the years, through its research in social work, social sciences, human resources management, health systems and allied fields, TISS has made consistent contributions to civil society and the development sector, while essaying a critical role in planning, policy and programme formulation, fostering critical re-thinking and development of people-centred interventions. The role of TISS in conducting pioneering research and extension activities rooted in the context of societal realities aimed at influencing policy and practice for positive social change, is widely acknowledged. Over the years, the research work carried out at TISS has been increasingly used for capacity building, field action, academics and policy advocacy on a spectrum of social, economic and environmental issues. TISS has a history of incubating and pioneering projects, like Childline, which are usually initiated by students and faculty and subsequently adopted by State Governments and the Central Government.

Field Action Projects TISS has created several field stations, located in some of the most remote geographical corners of the country: Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, tribal regions of eastern and central India and Kutch. These field stations adopt a holistic approach, integrating distinct ecosystems and local cultures to generate transdisciplinary research, teaching, training and action for tangible results for just and sustainable development. Field Action Projects of TISS are integral to the teaching, research and implementation continuum and these projects are housed in our various schools and centres.
