4 NP Programs: What does the Board Regulate? Nurse Practitioner program educator qualifications and appointments (Clinical and Nursing Faculty) Nurse Practitioner program administrator requirements (Track Leads) Preceptors (Majority of clinical experiences for NP students must be under licensed advanced practice registered nurses) Approval of new and ongoing NP programs (not masters or doctorate that do not lead to licensure qualifications) Licensees generally (can create issues when faculty observe behaviors of other faculty or NP students that are reportable to the BON) Out of State program clinicals in Oregon Out of State Programs Registration and approval is required through the Oregon Office of Degree Authorization for any out of state program placing students in Oregon l NP students and CRNA students must also be registered with the Board Rules requiring CNS students to be registered are coming to the Board at the February 16 Board meeting 4

5 Questions for CNS Preceptors Is the program aware of and compliant with the Criteria for the Evaluation for Clinical Nurse Specialist Masters, Practice Doctorate, and Post-Graduate Certificate Programs (2012)? Does the program provide preceptor orientation and clear expectations for student outcomes? Does the program make a site visit? If not, how do they evaluate student learning? Is the program NLNAC or CCNE accredited? Does it have approval to operate in Oregon? Does the program prepare a student for national certification in the role and population/specialty? Does the program meet Oregon requirements for prescriptive authority? Additional CNS Education Issues Students who want focused clinical (ie just for physical assessment or just with child psych patients) Students who want clinical hours for national certification Students who want prescribing only clinical CNSs who need reentry due to: Being out of the practice requirement Disciplinary action 5
