2 AANP Mission: Lead NPs in transforming patient centered health care 2015 is a year of celebration When it all began 1965 Dr. Loretta Ford and Dr. Henry Silver developed the first nurse practitioner program at the University of Colorado 1967 Boston College initiated one of the earliest master's programs for NPs 1971 One of the first family NP programs, PRIMEX, opened its doors at the University of Washington 1973 More than 65 NP programs existed in the U.S., and the National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners was established 6 2
3 1974 The American Nurses Association (ANA) developed the Council of Primary Care Nurse Practitioners 1980 Over 200 NP programs were available, and the Nurse Practitioner Associates for Continuing Education (NPACE) was established 1983 Approximately 22 24,000 NPs in the U.S The American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) was established 1989 Ninety percent of NP programs were master's or postmaster's degree programs, publication of the Journal of the AANP began, and the first AANP National Conference was held in Philadelphia with 158 attendees 7 Leaders stepped forward 1994 Mary Mundinger published landmark "Advanced Practice Nursing Good Medicine for Physicians" in The New England Journal of Medicine, further supporting facts that NPs are costeffective and high quality primary health care providers 1995 American College of Nurse Practitioners was formed 1999 Approximately 68,300 NPs in the U.S AANP Fellows program was established, and the first international NP conference was held 2004 National Nurse Practitioner Week, held annually in November, was recognized in a proclamation by the U.S. Congress Approximately 106,000 NPs in the U.S NP policy focused on health care reform, CMS regulations, Medicare payment, appropriations, Medical Home and state and local issues of importance to NPs and their patients. There were an estimated 140,000 NPs in the U.S. AANP worked with the White House Office of Health Reform to review primary care perspective on preventive care, access, coordinated primary care, quality of care, payment and the need to recognize all primary care providers as solutions to the health care crisis. The AANP Fellows program (FAANP) celebrated its 10th anniversary. 9 3
4 2013 was a very good year American Academy of Nurse Practitioners and the American College of Nurse Practitioners merged to form the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) Membership in AANP increased nearly 19 percent for the year, ending with 48,075 members Member benefits grew to include two journals (JAANP and JNP) and a package of lifestyle goods and services such as automobile rentals, vacation packages and discounts at major retailers A multi media national NP Public Awareness campaign, 171,000 Solutions, was developed that included a 30 second television spot, 30 second radio spot and print ad 10 Continuing to raise awareness 11 AANP s Federal Legislative Priorities Pass legislation which would enable NPs to certify eligibility for home health (S 578/HR 1392) Urge Congress to pass legislation recognizing NPs and other APRNs to practice at their full scope throughout the VA system (HR 1427/S 297) Pass legislation which includes NPs in Medicaid incentive payments (S 737) Authorize NPs to certify patients for Hospice care Authorize NPs to perform admitting exams and monthly patient assessments in SNFs 4

7 NP Related Research AANP conducts research studies on an annual basis focusing on NP salaries and practice AANP is a member of ICONS: Interagency Collaboration on Nursing Statistics AANP also sponsors projects by NPs in the form of a number of yearly grants and awards: AANP has opportunities to support research through: Question procurement Mailing lists Space at national conferences Listserves Letters of support Mentorship Annual Compensation Surveys *Data self-reported in the 2015 National Nurse Practitioner Compensation Survey. Data weighted to be representative of the NP population within each region.
