1 Course Syllabus College Credit Anatomy and Physiology Instructor: Mrs. Anthon Office: G122 Classroom: G119 Course Title: College Credit Anatomy and Physiology (through NWTC) Credits: 1. High School Credit = 1 2. College Credit = 4 The 4 credits articulate into the NWTC nursing program. The credits may be accepted by other colleges and universities outside of NWTC s General Education program, but you must inquire as to whether or not your school of choice will accept the transferability of the credits from NWTC. In most instances the college or university that you are attending will accept them as elective credits. Schools in the past that have accepted them as elective credits are: UW-Green Bay, UW-Oshkosh, UW-Lacrosse, UW-Milwaukee, UW-Madison, Carroll College, U of M Twin Cities, Notre Dame, Luther, St. Olaf, and Marian University. However, it is imperative that you check with the university to confirm whether the course is accepted by their institution. When a student applies for application to a college or university, that institution will request a high school transcript. In most cases the attending institution will want a transcript of record for those college courses that appear on the high school transcript. If, and how they will accept the course and its grade is solely determined by the institution. Just typing the web address will not work! High School Lab Fee: $45.00 Introduction: Congratulations! You have decided to make a serious commitment by accepting the challenges offered by the NWTC college credit general anatomy and physiology course. The NWTC general anatomy and physiology course is intended for those high school students interested in the human body and potentially the pursuit of a health/medical degree. Therefore, the course will demand more of you when compared to other high school courses, but upon successful completion of this course, the college benefits will be greater. Those benefits may include: (1) a cost savings in college tuition should you be granted credit by the college of their choice, (2) increased opportunity for sophomore college standing when NWTC credit is granted in conjunction with gaining college credit from other high school course work, (3) one less required college course allowing the student to advance within their degree program more quickly, and (4) students who participate in college courses may have more success with their college curriculum than declining to participate in a college level course. NWTC Expectations and Policies: 1. Course Themes, Concepts, Objectives And Activities You will be expected to master an acceptable level of understanding for each of the major themes that encompass a course in general anatomy and physiology, ranging from the process of science, to the relationship of structure and function, laboratory and cadaver work, and finally to applying their knowledge to the clinical application. The course activities section outlines some of the areas in which the student will need to become proficient. They are: a. The student will learn to use a college text as a tool for his/her own learning. b. The student will develop a working background of common Greek and Latin Roots in the development of proficiency in the language of anatomy and physiology. c. The student will become proficient in common lab procedures, and perform basic college level lab investigations in such areas as histology, and anatomy. d. The student will be required to develop a mastery of anatomy knowledge through the use of cadavers on sight at the college. e. The student will develop their skills in the area of group dynamics by gaining proficiencies in leadership, responsibility, contribution of teamwork, product output and self-evaluation,
3 communication, time management, and attention to organization through group lab and study sessions. f. The student will become an active participant in accumulating a knowledge base through discussions, reading, lecture and lab necessary for formulating functional relationships among life processes in preparation for unit tests and a final exam. 2. Attendance Requirement Students are encouraged to attend lab and lecture presentations as attendance in recorded in the grade book. Maintaining classroom attendance is vital to student s understanding of the material covered during lecture as well as solidifying the anatomical knowledge that is covered during classroom laboratory activities. 3. Final Grade Determination Tests are announced well in advance. There are no surprise quizzes or tests. Tests are not cumulative but cover material from unit to unit. There is a cumulative trimester exam as well as the NWTC comprehensive final exam. All lecture and lab test points, together with a cumulative trimester exam and the comprehensive final given by the college are added together to determine the final grade. 4. Grading Scales Grading Policy For College Credit % A 80-89% B 70-79% C 60-69% D Below 60 F
4 5. Lecture Requirements and Exams You are expected to be present for each exam. Habitual absenteeism on exam day (without a discussion with the instructor prior to the exam) can result in the loss of ten points from your score. Make-up lecture exams must be completed by appointment and the instructor reserves the right to give oral makeup exams. Normally, there will be one designated time selected by the instructor for each unit make-up exam which will be one to two days following the missed exam. There is no extra credit. 6. Laboratory Requirements and Exams The conceptual component of the course is reinforced by numerous hands-on required laboratory investigations. Many other activities and exercises will also be conducted throughout the course. Several of the anatomy investigations will require time outside of class either to study for lecture and lab practical tests, or to do cadaver work at NWTC. When time is scheduled at NWTC for cadaver study and practical tests it is imperative that the student be in attendance. THERE ARE MULTIPLE CADAVER LAB STUDY/TEST SESSIONS THAT ARE REQUIRED AT NWTC. DATES WILL BE GIVEN IN ADVANCE PLEASE PLAN AROUND THESE DATES. 7. Comprehensive Final Exam The comprehensive final examination is worth 10% of the student s final grade and cannot be made up if missed this is an NWTC department policy. The test will be scheduled for a 90 min session in late May. The exam is 100 multiple choice questions in computerized scantron form. 8. Outside Study/Review Groups Students are encouraged to develop study groups, find time outside of class to study the models, practice tissue identification during the histology unit, and work together to prepare each other for lab practical tests. Student confidence is high and anxiety is reduced when they are proficient at being able to identify and recognize the anatomical parts of the human body whether it be through model study, individual organ examination, or cadaver study. 9. Reading Requirements Due to the large amount of material that must be covered in this course it is important that students stay caught up with the reading assignments and have them completed by the assigned date. Taking this approach the student will have a base of knowledge enabling them to participate more fully in class discussions, while at the same time clarifying anything they didn t understand. Not only should students read the material but they should choose to be active readers engaging themselves with the text to solidify their understanding of the key concepts.
5 10. Specimens or slides CANNOT be removed from the laboratory without the instructor s permission. Only students in the college credit general anatomy and physiology are permitted to work with any of the laboratory materials. When students are using time to work in the lab they are the only ones permitted access to the lab and its materials. Other individuals must obtain permission from the instructor. 11. Any form of academic dishonesty including cheating and plagiarism will not be tolerated. Cheating on any test will result in a zero with no substitute test allowed. Repeat offenses will result in student failure of the course. 12. Lab safety procedures must be followed at all times both in the classroom and on campus at NWTC. Failure to follow safety procedures will result in your removal from the lab. 13. Ask questions. Do not wait until the day before the exam to ask questions about information that you are uncertain of. 14. To successfully acquire college credit you must earn a grade of C or better. A student receiving a D or F would need to retake the course and obtain a C for college program credit. WELCOME TO COLLEGE CREDIT ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY!
