NURMI #7 CATALOGUE COLLECTION // FW2014
Nurmi - a sustainable clothing label from Lahti, Finland - creates clothes and accessories where the nordic tradition of minimalism and longlasting design goes hand in hand with true sustainability.
// SUSTAINABLE STYLE We want do our part in changing the way the whole fashion industry works towards a more sustainable future. This means building a label which doesn t just talk about sustainability but rather makes concrete actions to truly make it happen. For us sustainability means quality, long-lasting design, ecological materials, environmentally-friendly production process, ethical working conditions and most of all, clothes that you will cherish forever.
// TRANSPARENCY An important part in sustainability is transparency throughout the whole production chain and openness in all business activities. We spend hours and hours searching for the best suppliers and partners and work only with those who are transparent. When it comes to the supply chain, its crucial to know everything about it - and we want to share this information with you.
// NO MORE FAST FASHION The Nurmi garments are divided loosely into collections but many of the items will continue their life also in the following collections. This is why we don t think of only one season when designing a new collection. It is more so a continuous process where we improve the existing styles and design new items which will complement the older ones. The straightforward yet functional design of Nurmi garments form the cornerstones of a wardrobe.
// CHERISH FOREVER
// MATERIALS We use only materials that are produced ecologically and ethically but are at the same time durable and of high quality. The materials for Nurmi garments are sourced from many different countries around the globe: Finland, Turkey, China, India and Romania. You can find detailed information about the origin of each material from this catalogue and from our website. HEMP Hemp is naturally ecological: As it grows well without many nutrients it requires no synthetic fertilizers. Hemp needs little irrigation and it can grow in arid regions. The strong and durable hemp also outcompetes other weeds, making the use of synthetic herbicides unnecessary. The 100% European hemp we use has similar look and feel as linen. The hemp / organic cotton denim is durable yet soft. ORGANIC COTTON Organic cotton is cultivated without using synthetic fertilizers or pesticides. The production enhances biodiversity and causes as little impact on the environment as possible. The use of GMOs is prohibited. A certificate admitted by an external audit ensures that cotton is produced organically. All the organic cotton used in Nurmi collection is certified (GOTS or IMO). PURE WASTE FABRICS The pure waste materials we use are made 100% out of recycled pre-consumer waste. By using discarded waste as raw material of fabrics we can significantly reduce the enviromental impact of the material production. The waste sourcing, processing, spinning and weaving is operated by Pure Waste textiles, a new innovative Finnish company. They source the waste and textile clips from clothing factories and fabric manufacturers all around the world and cooperate with the factories to produce high-quality pure waste fabrics. LEFTOVER FABRICS There can still be found a lot of dead stock fabrics which are leftovers from Finnish textile industry. Rolls and rolls of fabrics have been laying around for years in warehouses untouched. We have been searching through those fabrics and picked out the best and most high-quality ones to create limited edition styles.
// LOCAL PRODUCTION Nurmi garments and accessories are produced in Finland and in Finland s Southern neighbor Estonia. We work closely with all the factories and cooperate only with production places that we can trust. More information about our suppliers can be found from our website.

// JEANS
NURMI Jeans Nurmi jeans are designed to last for a long time as an essential part of your wardrobe. The jeans are made with respect for the environment and people around us so they don t just look good they are also good from inside. // Design & fit There is one style for men and one for women which both come in colors indigo blue and smokey blue. The fit is designed to be slim but not super skinny and style minimalistic. Waist is just high enough to be comfortable to wear and it fits to many different body shapes. All details are carefully thought and executed with great preciseness. // MaterialS The hemp denim is 55% hemp and 45% organic cotton. Organic cotton is grown in Turkey and certified organic by Institute for Marketecology ( Hemp is grown in China. The yarn is spun and the fabric is woven in China. The fabric production is operated by Hemp Traders a well established company from USA dedicated to sustainability. The pure waste denim is 100% recycled cotton. The warp yarn is made out of cutting waste from Chinese jeans factories and weft yarn is made out of yarn waste from Chinese spinning mills. The waste sourcing, processing, spinning and weaving is operated by Pure Waste textiles, a new innovative Finnish company. The material of pocket pouches is 100% GOTS certified organic cotton from Turkey. Jeans label is recycled inner tyre tube which is cut & engraved with laser in Helsinki, Finland by Laser Cut Studio. // Dyeing of fabric The dyeing process on the hemp denim begins with dyeing the yarn before it is woven. One yarn is dyed indigo blue, while the other is left natural. Then they are woven together. No chlorine bleached is used. Enzymes are used to improve the smoothness, strenght and weight of the fabric. Dyed with low impact dye stuff. Fixation is 70% or more, no salt is added to dye bath. No heavy metal content. Heat reclamation and water filtration on site. The pure waste denim is not dyed at all. The light blue color on the surface is the result of using cutting waste of indigocolored denim fabric. The color of the reverse side is natural which is made by using undyed yarn waste. // Production The cutting, sewing and finishing is made in a small town in Eastern Finland, Keitele. There is located the biggest jeans manufacturer in Scandinavia, M.A.S.I. Company Oy. The Nurmi jeans are made from start to finish in Keitele by talented factory workers. The pocket pouches are printed in Lahti, Finland, by UNQ Designs. The ecological and ethical aspects are taken well into consideration. In Finland the environmental laws are strict, workers rights are good, working conditions excellent and wage level one of the highest in the world. // FiniShing No other finishing applied than light water wash. It gives the material a soft feel and pre-shrinks the jeans. This way the jeans are more comfortable to wear from the beginning and you know which size to choose. // Care & washing Reduce washing by hanging your jeans outside or by putting them in freezer. Save energy and wash inside out at 30 C with environmentally friendly detergent. Line dry. The older the jeans get the better they become so please cherish them for many years to come!
