In 1942, it added an MBA program. By 1970, when the MBA became a vital tool for career development, the program was already well-known in the region. Accreditation ensures that the school continually meets high standards in admissions policy, curricula, faculty, library and computer facilities, and educational innovation and technology. 7 DETAILED COURSE DESCRIPTION 1 ECONOMICS ENVIRONMENT IN THE 21ST CENTURY The session offers an introduction to some of the key concepts used by economists. It consists of two components, one on microeconomic analysis and one on macroeconomic analysis. The main topics covered in microeconomics are the effective functioning of competitive markets and potential need for government intervention. The goal of the macroeconomics section is to understand the interactions among the main policy areas: monetary policy, fiscal policy, and wage-setting. Conceptual and theoretical frameworks will be discussed from the perspective of applied policy illustrations, providing the participants with a hands-on understanding of modern economic analysis. The participants will gain a thorough understanding of professional economists' ways of thinking and a concise overview of the most important topics and approaches in microand macroeconomics. No background in economics or mathematics is necessary. 2 STRATEGIC COST ANALYSIS FOR ENTERPRISE MANAGEMENT You will advance your ability to use accounting principles and concepts to make better day to- day business decisions as you examine cost behavior, variable margin, costvolume profit relationships, budgeting, break-even and incremental analysis. You will also learn to use capital budgeting and discounted cash flows to determine the acceptability of investment alternatives from a cost/resource perspective. Your research projects and out of- class assignments incorporate spreadsheet analyses and Internet resources. 7
8 3 ENTERPRISE FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT Enterprise Financial Management will sharpen your skills in analyzing and valuing public and private enterprises, as well as techniques for assessing the desirability of adding new assets. You will examine traditional discounted cash flow and comparable methods applied to both old and new economy firms. In addition, You will study the financial issues associated with mergers and acquisitions, financial restructuring, optionbased compensation and taking a company public. 4 MANAGING MARKETING IN THE ENTERPRISE Customers are the lifeblood of an organization. They make purchases that generate the revenues that are required for a firm to sustain its value-creating activity. The second year marketing course provides cutting-edge strategies, tools, and analytics that managers can rely upon in their quest to acquire new customers and/or keep and grow existing ones and those students can themselves apply to enhance their own firm s value-creation activity. 5 STRATEGIC MANAGEMENT/R&D/INNOVATION Innovation Management and Entrepreneurship is highly relevant to a broad range of positions especially those in organizations where innovation is a high priority. In particular, new product development personnel, R&D managers or team leaders, innovation project managers, technical sales or marketers, consultants, knowledge management professionals, technology commercialization personnel, or founders, as well as employees, in entrepreneurial start-ups. Attendees will learn from leading researchers as well as successful entrepreneurs and experienced innovation management professionals from some of the best R&D companies in the world. 8
9 6 LEADING AND MANAGING TEAMS AND INDIVIDUALS By exploring the interpersonal dynamics of individuals and groups, You will hone your leadership skills and your ability to create cohesive teams with collective investment in reaching goals. You will be better able in both traditional and virtual organizations to: manage conflict, dependency issues and difficult personalities; listen effectively and present yourself and your ideas to others; and manage virtual employees. 7 RISK MANAGEMENT The efficient management of risk confers competitive advantages to firms. The risk management process occurs at every level of the firm, from strategic decision making to functions such as marketing, finance, and accounting. This course is designed to introduce risk management in the context of general corporate management. Each step in the process will be reviewed in detail, including identification of risk, measurement and analysis of potential impact, and appropriate treatment techniques. Risk financing options will be discussed in the context of global insurance and alternative capital markets. The course presumes no knowledge of risk management or insurance. However, while the tools discussed are applicable to all types of risks facing a firm, we will concentrate on the class of risks known as pure risk events; those that pose the threat of a loss if they happen, but no possibility of a gain. 9
