13 INSPIRE vs. SDI INSPIRE lays down general rules to establish common infrastructures for spa&al informa&on in all member states of the EU Lists 34 spa&al data themes ranging from Cadastre parcel to Habitats and Biotops INSPIRE does not require collec&on of new spa&al data Legally binding for public ins&tu&on which are holding or owning data listed in the 34 annex themes to make their data accessible as Metadata View Service Download Service INSPIRE allows the possibility to limit the accessibility to certain users or to apply fees

14 Success factors of NSDIs Build a consensus process - build on common interests and create a common vision Establish the ins&tu&onal and policy framework Make spa&al data and metadata available and accessible: this is the essence of SDI Create poli&cal support User awareness

17 Challenges & Obstacles Percep&on and scope of SDI A geoportal doesn t make a SDI Real data sharing needs more then one data provider In all countries SDI shall be implemented by NMCAs Interest of NMCAs is rather focused on certain topics (e.g. cadastre, fee based data provision) than on collabora&ve SDI approach Limited mutual support (na&onal and interna&onal) between the stakeholders
