3 Who we are. Shepherd Center Rehabilitation Research Medical treatment For this presentation will focus only on mobile solutions being explored for patients with spinal cord injury (SCI) Approximately 500 admissions per year to its SCI service 3

4 Spinal Cord Injury Approximately 12,000 new injuries each year Most expensive hospital diagnosis on individual case basis Motor paralysis, sensory loss, impairment of bowel/bladder, respiratory, and other physiologic functions Costs and Impairment vary greatly by level extent of motor and sensory loss resulting from accident 4

Most patients are discharged to home despite continuing care needs Strong transitional support services for patients and families Readmission rates in first 30 days: about 6% National average is about 19% Common reasons seizures, respiratory issues, medication 8

Most common reasons for readmission after 30 days are pressure ulcers and urinary tract infections Suggests problem with self care routines and perhaps, caregiver burden Patients and families need READY access to medical information and guidance in problem solving for emergent medical problems 9
