Mobile Solutions in Rehabilitation Hospital Julie Gassaway, RN, MS Director Health/Wellness, Sr. Clinical Research Scientist Crawford Research Institute, Shepherd Center 1
Who we are. Shepherd Center One of only two specialty rehabilitation hospital in US focusing on only brain and spinal injuries 2
Who we are. Shepherd Center Rehabilitation Research Medical treatment For this presentation will focus only on mobile solutions being explored for patients with spinal cord injury (SCI) Approximately 500 admissions per year to its SCI service 3
Spinal Cord Injury Approximately 12,000 new injuries each year Most expensive hospital diagnosis on individual case basis Motor paralysis, sensory loss, impairment of bowel/bladder, respiratory, and other physiologic functions Costs and Impairment vary greatly by level extent of motor and sensory loss resulting from accident 4
5 Many Variations of Spinal Injury
6 Level of Hand Function
Average Length of Stay at Shepherd Center Approximately 52 Days 7
Shepherd Center is a GREAT Place.. Most patients are discharged to home despite continuing care needs Strong transitional support services for patients and families Readmission rates in first 30 days: about 6% National average is about 19% Common reasons seizures, respiratory issues, medication 8
Shepherd Center is a GREAT Place.. Most common reasons for readmission after 30 days are pressure ulcers and urinary tract infections Suggests problem with self care routines and perhaps, caregiver burden Patients and families need READY access to medical information and guidance in problem solving for emergent medical problems 9
Shepherd Center Mantra we can always do better 10
Our patients and families tell us You give us so much information, it is overwhelming. We don t really feel prepared to go home Recovery is a 10-step process and we leave Shepherd at step 3 11
Our patients and families tell us Peer support is so helpful wish there was more of it Ease and comfort of discussion sensitive issues Gain knowledge/advice from someone with direct experience Insight about opportunities for resuming pastimes, lifestyle Incorporate peers into patient and family training 12
Our patients and families tell us Provide more opportunity to use technology as a means to access disability-related information, advice, and contact with content experts Seek advice from healthcare professional about diagnosis or treatment info Non-professional advice is preferred for more personal advice coping and emotional support 13
A Patient Centered Approach to Successful Community Transition After Catastrophic Injury Funded by the Patient Centered Outcomes Research Institute and the Woodruff Foundation Mission: Ease transition to home following discharge from acute inpatient rehabilitation Reduce rehospitalization/emergency department use Increase self-efficacy Increase community participation and quality of life 14
A Patient Centered Approach to Successful Community Transition After Catastrophic Injury Enhance Peer Mentorship Enhance patient education programs Most effective learning is peer-to-peer HOW CAN MOBILE SOLUTIONS HELP? 15
Focused on Accessible Technology rather than create new assistive technology A fuzzy distinction. Assistive Technology creates access for people with disabilities by adding access features to a device through specialized additions (either software or hardware). Accessible Technology includes mainstream technology that is already usable by people with disabilities, and also encompasses assistive technology solutions.
