2 College Terms Associate in Applied Science (AAS) Degree - A degree to prepare students to enter into employment with a specialized skill such as Culinary Management. This degree should lead to a productive career but it does not transfer to a state university. Associate in Arts (AA) Degree The AA degree is designed for transfer to an upper division college or university. The AA degree is not a designated degree. Associate in Science (AS) Degree a degree designed to prepare students to enter a career upon completing the degree with no further study required such as Dental Hygiene. There are some articulation agreements for these degrees but will require additional general education courses. Bachelor s (BS) Degree This degree is awarded for successful completion of undergraduate curriculum at a four-year university most BS degrees consist of 120 college credit hours. 3 College Terms Continued Catalog Year The university catalog in effect at the time of a student s first enrollment governs course prerequisites, co-requisites and graduation requirements for a particular academic year. Common Prerequisite Manual A centralized list of program prerequisites for all majors at universities in the state of Florida found. Competitive Admission Policy Used by most colleges in which additional standards and criteria are required for acceptance into college, including exam scores, class rank, GPA, written essay, and recommendations. Limited Access Program Utilizes selective admission to limit program enrollment. These programs require students to complete all the program prerequisites and meet other limited access admission requirements. Taken from FACTS.org (Glossary)

4 Florida Transfer Agreements The transfer agreements in the state of Florida protect the credits earned by students at the community colleges in the state of Florida. They guarantee that students who complete the AA degree will be admitted to the state university system or private college and will not have to repeat courses already completed at a community college in the state of Florida. This does not guarantee acceptance to a particular college or particular program. All pre-requisites and other entrance requirements for a particular major or program must be met and acceptance may be based on limited access requirements. (FACTS.org)

5 Statewide Course Numbering System The Statewide Course Numbering system facilitates the transfer of students among Florida s postsecondary institutions. Courses that have a similar academic content and are taught by faculty with comparable faculty credentials are given the same prefix and number, and are considered to be equivalent courses. By Florida law, an institution accepting a transfer student from another participating institution must award credit for equivalent courses. Credits awarded must satisfy the requirements of the receiving institution as though the student had taken the courses at the receiving institution. (FACTS.org)

6 Statewide Course Numbering System Continued Excluded from this guaranteed transfer are: College preparatory & career & technical preparatory courses Applied courses in the performing arts Clinical courses in health related areas Skilled courses in Criminal Justice Graduate courses Courses with the last three digits ranging from Courses not offered at the receiving institution (FACTS.org)

7 General Education Requirements Each state institution has a 36 hour general education block designed to give students a fundamental knowledge, skills, and values that are needed in their academic studies. If a student completes the 36 hour general education block at a community college, it will be accepted in whole by a university in the state of Florida. If the student transfers without the AA, he/she is encouraged to complete the 36 hour general education block. If not completed, the receiving college can require you to take additional general education courses. (FACTS.org)

8 Foreign Language Requirement University Entrance Requirement Only Two credits from high school, eight to ten credits at college level, CLEP exam, or other determined by the university. American Sign Language may be by some universities. Check with the transferring university. Be aware that some majors have a university graduation requirement of a second-year level foreign language. ie: FSU Psychology major

9 GCCC AA Degree Graduation Requirements Completion of 60 acceptable college-level credits. Complete the 36 credit hours of general education courses. Complete a minimum of 24 credit hours of AA designated courses. Course numbers that have a # prior to the number, remedial courses, and vocational courses are not acceptable courses for the AA degree. Earn an overall 2.0 GPA and a Gulf Coast 2.0 GPA. Complete 25% of college-level hours at GCSC (15 hours). Satisfy the CLAS requirement. Submit an application for graduation by the due date. Fulfill all financial obligations to the college.

10 Gulf Coast Community College AA Degree 60 college credit hours Core Requirements: *ENC1101 and ENC1102 (6 hours) (both Gordon Rule), *EUH1000 or EUH1001, POS2041, PSY2012 or SYG credit hours each. *Physical Science 3 hours *Biological Science 3 hours *Humanities 3 hours from each area - : Area I Visual and Performing Arts Area II REL, PHI, or SPN2200 (Gordon Rule) Area III Literature (Gordon Rule) *Mathematics 6 hours level of STA, MAC, or MGF *Foreign Language and/or approved electives 24 hours

11 Transferring With or Without an AA Degree With an AA degree will transfer as a package. Without an AA students will be evaluated on high school transcripts as well as college transcripts Students with less than 60 credit hours must compete with entering freshman. May need SAT or ACT scores. May need to take additional general education courses.

12 Be Prepared for Transfer Declare a major no later than completion of 24 credit hours. (Recommended not required.) Meet with GCSC academic advisor check on common prerequisite courses. Monitor your progress with the AA Transfer Evaluation on FACTS.org. Contact the transfer services of the universities and check all transfer policies. Plan to meet or exceed entrance requirements. Complete AA and prerequisites for major. Must have a minimum GPA of 2.0.

13 Transfer Checklist - With AA Know the admission requirements and deadlines for applications. Be aware that the application deadline for the university may be different than the application deadline for your major. Apply to university no earlier than one year in advance and no later than the deadline. Include application fee. Submit Medical History form and provide proof of immunization. Apply to major if required by university. Contact advisor in major. Contact The Office of Disability Support Services if needed.

14 Transfer Checklist Continued Submit GCSC transcripts, high school transcripts (to verify foreign language requirement), and any other transcripts from colleges attended (all original transcripts). Submit ACT or SAT scores if needed for major. Submit Housing application and/or inquire about housing possibilities. The university will notify students of their decision via mail or some universities have an online status check. Upon acceptance, students will be notified of the next steps.
