2 he Stated Objectives of the College I o promote professional training of physicians in est Africa o promote the standards of professional ractice, ethics and morals of physicians in West frica o promote health and healthcare in West Africa o determine persons to be designated as pecialist physicians after due consideration of heir training, qualifications and experience.

3 tated Objectives of the College II To advise and assist governments of the subregion, the West African Health Organization and other relevant organizations on matters related to training, health promotion, healthcare and research in West Africa. To co operate with appropriate bodies that encourage and provide facilities for the achievement of the objectives of the College. To publish books, journals and other scientific materials as may be considered useful in support of these objectives.

4 Philosophy of the Revised Curriculum for Training Laboratory sicians in the WACP were based on Needs Assessment There are only few specialists in teaching hospitals and other large hospitals. Training institutions are limited in number There is lack of comprehensive training equipment in training institutions. Working relationship with technologists is poor Undergraduate exposure is weak Trainers do not have adequate time for

5 tro The training programme for Anatomical Pathology under the West African College of physicians is broken down into Two main stages: Membership training Fellowship training The prospective trainee should have passed a qualifying examination to enter into the training programme in any accredited institution.

8 Workbook/Log Book and Portfolio The existing Log book was modified and Work books are encouraged. This was based on the guidelines of the World Federation of Postgraduate Medical Education following an admission of the fact that Residency training has ceased to be just apprenticeship and passive learning by the residents. Rather it is a planned programme with active teaching and learning, using various methods of teaching including didactic lectures and teacher directed instruction.

10 Assessment For the purpose of formative assessment, the trainees are expected to keep records of ALL activities which they undertook including but not limited to Lectures, Workshops, Grand rounds, Seminars, Clinic Attendance, Benchwork, Call duties, Report Writing, Case presentations, journal Clubs, tutorials delivered to Students, etc.

11 he Goal of Formative assessment To find out how much knowledge, skill and attitude a trainee has. It involves measurement and decision making on an individual s educational traits, potential and actual performance. We employ numerous strategies to ensure evaluation of the full range of competencies. As we know, Many work place assessments are subjective but it is important to have objective assessments to make them valid, reliable and reproducible. Usual Stated objectives It is important to identify poor performers. It helps to drive learning by focussing on important areas of practice. It is used to facilitate personal development.

13 oal The goal is primarily to determine Objective #4 of the stated objectives of the college. Specifically To produce a specialist with a thorough knowledge of the molecular basis of disease, the role of environmental and genetic factors and their interaction in disease causation, and the role of the laboratory to drive effective disease diagnosis, management, and prevention (WACP Faculty of Lab Med revised curriculum, 2008, pg 1) Graduates of these training programmes are expected to subsequently help fulfill the other stated objectives of the College.

15 Expected Competencies II NEUROPATHOLOGY Knowledge of basic anatomy of brain, basic gross description and diagnosis of common brain tumours, common special stains used in neuropathology and enzyme IHC for muscle. CYTOPATHOLOGY IHC and EM Demonstrate knowledge of procedure and preparation of specimens for special techniques MOLECULAR AND CYTOGENETIC Flow cytometry and FISH CISH etc. LAB MGT

16 Membership Vs fellowship The goal of the membership training is to permit acquisition of broad skills in intermediate management of a general diagnostic laboratory with knowledge to refer appropriately for expert review. Hands on with simple equipment troubleshooting is an expected outcome. Fellowship qualifies the candidate to practice as a specialist (Hospital Consultant and University Lecturer/Researcher if academic career choice is made)

17 mplementation There is a set training curriculum There is a set format for writing proposals for dissertation and format for assessment of same. The Summative assessments are carried out under specified formats for examination, timed stages and well defined content. Questions are Competency Based and set at different levels for each examination type. There are accreditation criteria for training institutions

18 Accreditation he Residency Training Programme in Laboratory edicine is conducted in centres accredited by the est African College of Physicians on the ecommendation of the Faculty Board of laboratory edicine. The list of accredited training centres is ublished by the College from time to time he College and these centres ensure that training acilities and the training programmes are maintained t an acceptable level. Accredited centres are esponsible for providing the resources, human and aterial, to train the resident doctors sufficiently to

19 Accreditation A Hospital laboratory for training is accredited after inspection by a team from the Faculty. The minimum requirements are initially sent to the head of the Hospital. The four clinical laboratories are accredited together since training is composite. The following are considered; space, equipment, personnel, services offered, clinical facilities, blood transfusion services, academic programmes, Library and IT facilities and teaching facilities.

21 Further developments In each Specialty, there is approval to set up Post Fellowship diplomas For anatomical pathology, CYTOPATHOLOGY is the starting point, then there is now a proposal to follow with forensic Pathology.
