1 POWERFUL INSECT CONTROL IN GRAPES

2 Powerful Insect Control in Grapes As temperatures warm, damaging insects are on the move. Dow AgroSciences has four insecticides Intrepid, Delegate, Success and Entrust to help control these pests. All four insecticides were reviewed and registered under the U.S. EPA s Reduced Risk Pesticide Program. Intrepid Insecticide Long-lasting worm control Intrepid is an insect growth regulator and, since its registration in 2003, has been used extensively in California vineyards. It provides long-lasting control of lepidopteran pests including without disrupting populations of key beneficial insects. In a decade of use, there have been no reported cases of a secondary pest outbreak caused by an Intrepid application. Extended residual makes Intrepid a good fit at bloom and at the pre-bunch closure spray. When properly timed, a generation of leafroller and leaffolder can be controlled with a single application of Intrepid. Delegate Insecticide Quick knockdown, thrips control Delegate was registered for use in grapes in It is the only insecticide used in grapes that controls worms and thrips. n Contact/ingestion activity for quick knockdown n Translaminar ability (into the leaf) n Won t flare mites or secondary pests n Controls, worms, thrips, grapeleaf skeletonizer, LBAM n Ovicidal and larvicidal activity n Long-lasting residual (up to 21 days on treated foliage) n Won t disrupt key beneficial insect populations n Controls, leafrollers, leaffolders, orange tortrix, LBAM Entrust Insect Control OMRI-listed Entrust is OMRI-labeled as an allowable product for organically-produced grapes. Success Insect Control Success has been registered for use on grapes for nearly 15 years and is still used in certain situations. Most often, it is used when export tolerance issues arise with other pest control products. Crops treated with Success are accepted in many export countries. Delegate insecticide is the preferred Group 5 insecticide if no export issues exist. n Contact/ingestion activity n Controls, worms, thrips, grapeleaf skeletonizer, LBAM n Controls, worms, thrips, grapeleaf skeletonizer, LBAM

Van Steenwyk Background: In 2010, UC Extension-Napa County conducted an efficacy trial on 1st generation on Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. Insecticides Intrepid, Altacor, Entrust and DiPel were applied by the grower on May 7 at egg hatch. DiPel was applied twice more and Entrust once more. Four treatments within four replications were used in a randomized complete block design in the 30-acre trial. Evaluations were made May 26 by examining 960 grape clusters per treatment. Summary: Stacked bar chart combines clusters with damage and clusters with larva. The pre-count (not untreated) of in this trial was 50%, meaning 50% of the clusters had an presence. All treatments provided excellent control, according to the researchers. Intrepid was the top treatment, controlling eggs that were present, and having a residual lasting long enough to cover the flight (which ended May 31). According to the researchers, there was minimal impact on predatory mites and beneficial insects by all treatments. Background: A small plot trial was conducted to determine the effectiveness of insecticides on large larvae 4th and 5th instars. Five treatments within four replicates were made on June 8 using a backpack sprayer. 240 clusters per treatment were evaluated on June 10. Summary: All treatments controlled significantly better than the untreated control. Although large larvae are not the preferred spray timing for these insecticides, the trial showed that Agri-Mek and Delegate were effective against them Agri-Mek 10 oz/a Delegate 3.6 oz Avaunt 4 oz Altacor 3 oz Untreated Details of these trials and others at Single egg laid on flat surface Larva at harvest Photos courtesy of Dr. Monica Cooper, UCCE-Napa

4 Application Tips Spray timing Spray volume Intrepid: Apply at initiation of egg hatch. Intrepid kills by ingestion only. Delegate: Apply when pests appear, targeting eggs or small larvae. Volume should be carefully adjusted to assure thorough uniform coverage of infested parts of the crop. Use at least 40 gpa for full-grown vines. Coverage for leafroller should include the tops of vines where leafrolls are made. Active ingredient Class of chemistry Rates Adjuvant Re-entry interval Pre-harvest interval Pests controlled Intrepid methoxyfenozide IRAC Group oz/a 8 12 oz/a for most situations High-quality spreader recommended. 30 days Delegate spinetoram IRAC Group oz/a (worms) 5 oz/a (thrips) 7 days Thrips Success spinosad IRAC Group oz/a 7 days Thrips Entrust spinosad IRAC Group 5 Tank mixes should have a final ph of 6.0 or above before Delegate, Success or Entrust is added to tank oz/a 7 days Thrips
