8 1994 Carnegie Classifications Research Universities I: These institutions offer a full range of baccalaureate programs, are committed to graduate education through the doctorate, and give high priority to research. They award 5 or more doctoral degrees1 each year. In addition, they receive annually $4 million or more in federal support. 2 Research Universities II: These institutions offer a full range of baccalaureate programs, are committed to graduate education through the doctorate, and give high priority to research. They award 5 or more doctoral degrees1 each year. In addition, they receive annually between $15.5 million and $4 million in federal support. 2 Doctoral Universities I: These institutions offer a full range of baccalaureate programs and are committed to graduate education through the doctorate. They award at least 4 doctoral degrees1 annually in five or more disciplines. 3 Doctoral Universities II: These institutions offer a full range of baccalaureate programs and are committed to graduate education through the doctorate. They award annually at least ten doctoral degrees in three or more disciplines or 2 or more doctoral degrees in one or more disciplines. 3 Master s (Comprehensive) Universities and Colleges I: These institutions offer a full range of baccalaureate programs and are committed to graduate education through the master s degree. 13 Themes Declining market share for the market leading regional comprehensives Substantial growth in graduate degree production among former LA2 institutions Appears to be overlap with increased graduate degree production among institutions that are less selective for undergraduates (no relevant information for graduate selectivity) What we have here is a boom in online & extension production of graduate degrees in education by institutions neither prepared to deliver graduate degrees or to credential professionals in the field of education. Many of these graduate degrees are initial credentials granted to individuals already holding a bachelors degree in another field. 13
