2 The programme aims to provide students with the skills and expertise to enable them to critically evaluate risk management strategies as they relate to the field of occupational safety and health. t the end of the core programme (PGip) the student will have acquired the following. n advanced coherent body of theoretical and applied professional knowledge. holistic, multi-disciplinary understanding of the scientific, legislative, policy, technical and managerial skills on which to base professional competence in relation to occupational safety and health. higher critical awareness of the inter-relationship between the workplace culture, the work place environment and health n informed, critical and imaginative attitude towards post graduate and professional practice. The ability to critically appraise risk in a variety of complex occupational situations and design and implement management solutions to reduce risk. Refined communication skills providing the ability to communicate using a variety of media to specialist, senior executives and non-specialist on matters pertaining to occupational safety and health. MSc For those undertaking the MSc the students will build on the above by: Undertaking a major piece of research at masters level involving the design, planning, implementation and critical evaluation of an area of occupational safety and health using appropriate methodologies, data collection and evaluation. 11. The chemical, physical and biological hazards in the workplace, together with their potential to act synergistically to impact detrimentally on health.. Individual and group behavioural issues in improving safety and health practice. 8. omprehensive and detailed knowledge of risk management and application within practice. 9. Experience in application of research approaches, techniques and methodology. Teaching/learning methods Students gain knowledge and understanding through attendance in lectures, seminars, and through a variety of directed and self directed learning activities e.g. group projects, case study analysis. The use of case studies that reflect actual workplace environments are essential in enabling the student to relate knowledge to the practical situations in which they are likely to practice in the future. The use of e-learning strategies is also integrated into the teaching and learning strategies through the use of professional on line data bases such as arbour index, HSE campaign sites. OSIS plus will also be used to encourage independent study and formative assessment through the use of interactive exercises and quizzes, links to external sources of information and Pod cast presentation and lecture notes available to the student for downloading. The use of the message board and interactive chat room facility will also be encourage to raise debate and discussion on key subject area. ssessment Students knowledge and understanding is assessed formatively & summatively by and combination of coursework, and case studies designed to reflect current working, cultural and physical environments likely to be experienced by students in their future professional activities. Presentations will also be used as a formative assessment with written feedback given rapidly to progress learning and understanding. Examinations are necessary in certain modules to ensure that students have retained certain key elements of knowledge essential for their future professional activities. 3

Teaching/learning methods Students learn these cognitive skills through case study analysis of practical workplace problems relevant to current working practices, group and mini seminars and Workshops will help students articulate ideas, reflect on their understanding and learn from others in a constructive environment. E-learning facilities available on OSIS plus such as interactive exercises and quizzes will help develop cognitive skills. ssessment Student's cognitive skills are assessed formatively & summatively by essay, case study and written examination, research proposal and research project. The assessment of cognitive skills are integrated into the examinations through the use of part-seen elements of the exams which relate to scenarios commonly experienced by health and safety professionals. 4

Post - Graduate skills On completion of this programme the successful student will be able to: 1. ommunicate effectively both written and verbally 2. Use the range of Information technology on offer to search for peer reviewed, legislative and professional guidance literature 5. emonstrate personal and career development in a professional capacity.. Enhanced numeracy skills required at level 4. Effectively manage their time throughout the course of study Teaching/learning methods Students learn practical skills through interactive participation in modules. The modules have been designed to encourage practical work as appropriate, for example workplace inspections and risk assessments, practical workplace visits to view and identify a range of hazardous working environments. The use if the interactive workplace environment created in the environmental health laboratory allows students the opportunity to view work equipment and machinery type hazards and handle and use a variety of occupational hygiene and noise monitoring equipment. ssessment Students practical skills are assessed formatively & summatively by practical inspection and report writing and in part by the use of case study assessments. Some modules also assess presentation skills formatively as a way of improving verbal communications skills often required in professional practice. Teaching/learning methods Students learn key skills through participation in all elements the programme, in particular group work, exercises and the completion of research methods and MSc dissertation process of planning, researching and resourcing for MSc students. ssessment Post -graduate skills are integrated into all forms of assessment. In particular the research methods as an essential element of the course and final dissertation for MSc programmes will ensure the development and assessment of the key skills. 5
6 12. Programme structure Overall structure of the programme Students will study for 24 weeks over two terms, utumn and Winter terms for those Starting in September. There are breaks at hristmas and Easter. ssessments are carried out throughout the semester in both terms with examinations being held in the summer. The programme is divided into study units called modules. Each module has a credit value of 30 credits, except the project, which is 0 credits in size. Each 30 credit module represents approximately 300 hours of student learning, endeavour and assessment. To obtain the Post Graduate iploma in Occupational Safety and Health Management a student will need to have achieved 120 credits of learning at level 4. For the M.Sc. students will need to also have completed the project (180 credits in total). N. The programme operates as a long year programme Levels and modules OMPULSORY OPTIONL PROGRESSION REQUIREMENTS Students must take all of the following: lternative level 4 Research Methods Pg/MSc Students must take all of the following: PRS 404 Risk management Techniques PRS4199 Scientific Research Methods PRS431 Managing Hazardous gents & their effects in the Workplace PRS431 Managing Workplace and Work Equipment Hazards For the MSc: PRS499 Project Module Students must complete PRS404, PRS4199, PRS431 & PRS431 before progressing onto PRS499. Part-time students must complete PRS404 and PRS4199 before progressing onto the 2 nd year of study Non-compensatable modules Module level Module code

Information about assessment regulations The regulations applying to the programme are those common to the University, except that where modules are multiply assessed all elements need to be passed at a minimum grade of 1 on the University 20 Point Scale. Self deferral is not permitted. 15. Placement opportunities, requirements and support (if applicable) Many students particularly part-time students will often be working in a safety and health role although it not a necessary component of the degree as both full-time and part-time students will be exposed to a variety of practical exercises and case studies with input from existing practitioners to enable them to put the learning into context. Placement experience will be encouraged as this will enhance the learning experience and graduates will become graduate members of IOSH which will require them to complete 2 year professional development post qualification with supporting P provided by the university. 1. Future careers (if applicable) Increased skills in Occupational Health & Safety, risk assessment, auditing and an enhanced knowledge of Occupational Health & Safety management will improve students overall value to employers and the profession. Students ability to take on a senior management role in OSH within an organisation will be advanced. The programme enables students to begin or enhance a career in Occupational Safety & Management and provide the underpinning academic requirements for chartered membership of IOSH. 1.
