1 Lake Tahoe Community College Official Course Outline for: ENG 102 Modification Date: 3/26/2007 Title V Date: 3/26/2007 Course Title: Introduction to Literature Lecture Hours Lab Hours Quarter Units Total Hours Repeatable Grading Option Letter Grade or Pass/No Pass Catalog Description This course is an introduction to literature which places its emphasis on genre such as short stories, poetry, and drama. Students will read fiction, drama, and poetry in order to develop skills in critical reading and writing. Writing assignments emphasize expository analysis of the reading material. Schedule Description The arts give us an opportunity to explore our world through the perceptions of great minds. In literature, writers reflect upon the changing times and values that they face. In this course, we will study great poets who have found the perfect words to express their emotions, playwrights who have challenged the social and religious institutions of their times, and authors who have revealed unexpected truths in timeless fashion. Read and study the works that have changed our consciousness and our world: Sophocles, Shakespeare, Frost, Atwood, Miller, and others. This is an opportunity to see how great works of literature change lives. Prerequisites ENG 101 with grade of "C" or better or equivalent. Corequisites Course Advisories Entrance Skills 1. Analyze and evaluate assigned and researched texts. 4. Apply critical thinking and logical reasoning skills to the text of life. Methods of Assessing Student Learning Outcomes 1. Compose and revise genre specific essays 2. Produce response/reflection papers 3. Participate in small group discussions of current social and political issues, connect these issues to satirists and essayists of the past, and present conclusions to the class 4. Tests on each genre 5. Content quizzes on specific readings 6. Present a current "artist" to the class, and defend his/her "art" 7. Student evaluations of the learning process Methods of Instruction 1. Discussion 2. Lecture 3. Video-tapes (such as Hamlet; e.e. cummings; Hemingway) 4. Research projects 5. Internet projects 6. Group projects 7. Live performances Appropriate Readings 1. Read selections from an anthology that contains the three genres. 2. Supplemental readings that enhance the readings in the anthology will be provided by the instructor. Outside Assignments 1. Utilize library and online sources in preparation for written assignments.
4 2. Receive additional credit for attending literary readings. 3. When appropriate, certain students will be required to work with a tutor. 4. See a live performance. Writing Assignments Students will produce 5000 words of writing through various essays, reflection/response papers, and in-class writing assignments. Critical Thinking Critical thinking skills will be examined through: 1. analysis, evaluations, and interpretation of various authors 2. an explication of a poem 3. close reading from a play 4. class presentations Texts/Resources 1.
