Name (title) which will best describe this grant application: Celebration of Undergraduate Research and Undergraduate Travel Award Programs B. What is the timeline for beginning and completion of program/event? The Celebration of Undergraduate Research occurs in April of each year. Applications for Undergraduate Travel Awards are reviewed and disbursed monthly. C. Outline the proposed program/event objective(s). We are asking the Carolina Parents Council to partner with us to fund our Celebration of Undergraduate Research symposium and our Undergraduate Travel Award program. Held in the Frank Porter Graham Student Union and attended by over 400 students, parents, faculty, staff, and administrators, the Celebration provides UNC-Chapel Hill undergraduates the opportunity to present their research in either an oral presentation or poster session. The Celebration promotes interdisciplinary conversations about research at Carolina and provides students with the opportunity to meet and talk with each other and with attendees about their research, accomplishments, and avenues for future scholarship. The Celebration, together with pre-symposium workshops provided by OUR, Page 1 of 6

2 provides students with the opportunity to practice public speaking, learn to ask and answer questions about research, and gain experience creating well-designed PowerPoint presentations and posters. For many students, the Celebration provides an important first opportunity to present research in a conference setting. However, some students also submit their research to national and international professional conferences. To support students seeking to share their scholarship at professional conferences, OUR provides an Undergraduate Travel Award up to $500 for registration fees and transportation costs. Like students who present at the Celebration, students presenting at professional conferences gain experience preparing effective presentations, public speaking, and asking and answering questions about research. Moreover, they have the opportunity to meet with leading senior scholars in their fields of research. D. Describe how students will benefit and what student needs are being addressed. From participating in either the Celebration and or other professional conferences, students benefit by being introduced to the true nature of research and by being treated as professionals. Students wrote: I learned the importance of networking. I was able to talk to graduate schools, principle investigators of biomechanics laboratories, and directors of biomedical engineering programs at the conference. These contacts will be important in my applications to graduate schools, and talking to them taught me a lot about the biomechanics field. ~ I learned about different data collection methods in many different fields, ranging from social psychology to animal sciences to poetry. This was very interesting because I do not get to see the work of these different fields on a day-to-day basis. The opportunity for collaboration between fields was also very evident and good for networking opportunities. ~ What I have learned most is what it means to be a part of the printmaking community, one of the most tightknit and communicative communities in the arts. I now know that this is a community that helps promote influence and inspire one another on an almost constant basis. I want to continue to be a part of this community. E. Describe the profile and estimate the number of undergraduate students served. The entire student body is served by the Celebration of Undergraduate Research symposium. Since the program s inception in 2000, it has been a campus-wide event open to all undergraduates from a variety of disciplines. Over the past 6 years, the symposium has hosted an average of 150 undergraduate presenters per year from a variety of disciplines. Last year, we estimated that over 400 individuals attended including current undergraduates, parents, prospective students, UNC administrators, and other UNC staff. The entire student body is also severed by the Undergraduate Travel Award program. All students are eligible to apply for an award. The award requires an abstract of their research, confirmation of acceptance at a professional conference, and a letter of support from a UNC faculty mentor. Since its inception in 2001, over 400 travel awards have been disbursed. This is an average of 32 awards per year at an average cost of $250 per travel award. Due to the limited funds available for these awards, each award was for less than half of the cost of students registration and transportation costs. Funding for the Celebration of Undergraduate Research (CUR) symposium and the Travel Award also helps students to complete the presentation requirements for the Carolina Research Scholar Program (CRSP) and Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF). To date 1,568 students have registered for CRSP and last academic year ( ), 85 students received the Carolina Research Scholar notation on their transcripts. To date, over 800 students have completed SURF projects developed with the advice of faculty mentors from all academic divisions (Fine Arts and Humanities, Natural Sciences, Social Sciences and Professional Schools). Page 2 of 6

3 F. Describe how the overall success of the proposed program/event will be measured. Attendance at the Celebration will be recorded and students participating in the Celebration will be asked to provide feedback on their experience. Likewise, travel award recipients will be asked to provide feedback on the most important things they have learned about research and/or scholarship through their conference presentation and how their experience has helped to shape their career goals. Students learned the importance of being able to share their work with those outside of their disciples: One student wrote. I think the most important thing I learned was the importance of making your research accessible for people who are not in the field. It is impossible to communicate the significance of your work otherwise. I also learned the importance of asking presenters relevant questions regarding their investigations in order to better understand their work. Students are exposed to opportunities to do research in many different sectors. One student shared, It was very exciting for me to see people from a wide breadth of institutions (non-profit, academic, public, and private sector) attending and presenting. While I know I am interested in a career in research, I don t yet know if academia is the setting that best suits my wants and needs. I learned that there are plenty of opportunities for research across sectors. Students gained confidence to pursue their goals. A student told us, Getting to present at ASCB [American Society for Cell Biology] has made me a more confident researcher. I am now more comfortable presenting my results to students and faculty members of other universities. This experience will be very beneficial when I interview at potential graduate schools. G. Is this a new or existing program/event? Is this a one-time or continuing program/event? The Celebration began in 2000 and included poster and oral presentation sessions, and presentations from the visual and performing arts. On average, 150 students from 30 different departments participate. The Travel Award program began 2001 and has provided support to over 400 students to date. Executive Summary: Briefly summarize your proposal (150 words limit). The executive summary is an essential component of the Grant Application. The summary should only highlight main information that is critical to understanding your proposal. Financial information should not be included with this section. The Office for Undergraduate Research values its partnership with the Carolina Parents Council which provides opportunities for undergraduates to present research at the Celebration of Undergraduate Research symposium or a professional conference supported by the Undergraduate Travel Award program. The Celebration, an annual campus-wide event, held at UNC-CH showcases undergraduate research and the Undergraduate Travel Award program reimburses registration and transportation to professional conferences. Presenting research in a public forum allows students to connect with students/professionals who have experienced similar challenges, and to find inspiration to continue working toward their goals. One student wrote, I met a lot of professors as well as students who have gone through the hardships and struggles in math. Looking at so many accomplished people encouraged me to pursue my degree in academia and research. A continued partnership with the Parents Council is essential to making research the distinctive feature of a Carolina education. PLEASE CONTINUE ON THE NET PAGE FOR PART II Page 3 of 6

6 SECTION C From Section B above, review the budget items that you are requesting Parents Council funding. Then determine and list only those items that are absolutely imperative to this program s efficacy. You should also consider other funding options that may be available for support of this grant proposal. Insert the budget items and include the dollar amount requested per line item. Making this determination is essential, as the Parents Council may find this grant application worthy of funding, but funds may or may not be available to grant a full approval of the requested amount in Section B. Section C (continued) Parents Council Funding amount absolutely imperative to program efficacy: Symposium support: Supplies and Materials $ 3,000 Travel Award Program (24@$500 for registration and transportation) $ 12,000 Essential Parents Council required for this program/event to be effective $ 15,000 Section D Briefly explain why Parents Council funds are necessary for this program/event. The Council s funds are essential for ensuring that undergraduates have an opportunity to receive research mentorship and faculty and peer advising on careers requiring critical thinking and research skills. The Council s partnership also helps to raise awareness and generate matching grants from other contributors. If less funding is provided than requested, fewer awards for conference travel can be made.
