Applicants who are currently enrolled in high school, taking these courses and anticipating completing the grade and course requirements may continue with the application process. Students enrolled in high school should request that the high school mail a final transcript to BRCC as soon as possible upon graduation. Students who do not meet the biology requirement can do so by taking BIO 090 Foundations of Biology. Students who do not meet the math requirement can do so by taking MAT 143 Quantitative Literacy. All courses must be completed with a grade of C or higher in order to meet these high school requirements. College transcripts will be evaluated for related (non-sur prefix) academic courses required in the Surgical Technology program (see page 118 of BRCC s catalog). To be considered for transfer, course work must be from a regionally accredited college with a grade of C or better and be equivalent to BRCC requirements. 4. See the Pre-Enrollment Placement Testing Waiver Policy on pages 8-9 of BRCC s Catalog.
3 3 Applicants first beginning classes Fall 2016 will be assessed under the new Multiple Measures for Placement policy to determine if placement testing is required. Students who have graduated within five years of enrollment at BRCC from a high school legally authorized to operate in North Carolina AND with a G.P.A. 2.6 AND with four approved math courses may be considered ready for college level work and not be required to take the Pre-Enrollment Placement Test. Call Stephanie Kanupp, Surgical Technology instructor, (828) to reserve materials. Applicants must attend a session in order to meet admission requirements. Meeting dates are: Monday, November 16, 2015 Monday, January 25, 2016 Monday, March 14, 2016 Monday, April 18, 2016 (TCC) Wednesday, May 18, 2016 STEP 2: SUBMIT SURGICAL TECHNOLOGY CANDIDATE REVIEW FORM TO THE REGISTRAR S OFFICE 1. No later than 5pm on Tuesday, May 31, 2016, after Step 1 (Minimum Admission Requirements) has been completed, you must take the completed Review Form to the Registrar s Office. NOTE: This application is used solely for surgical technology selection purposes and does not take the place of the BRCC Application for Admission. The Registrar s Office will confirm that your Minimum Admission Requirements have been met. The components of the selection system include the following categories: A Completion of selected academic courses
4 4 B Documentation of related experience C Earned degrees D Hospital Sponsorship Adding together the points earned for completed academic courses, documented related experience, earned degree, and hospital sponsorship will determine your total points awarded. In the case of applicants with the same number of points earned, the applicant with the highest number of academic points will be ranked higher. Item A. Completion of selected academic courses and points awarded. Applicants will be awarded points on related surgical technology courses completed and grades received. Although these courses are NOT required to be completed prior to the application deadline or before starting the program, it is helpful to the applicant s overall ranking to take as many of these courses in advance as possible. Applicants may receive point credit and possible transfer credit for equivalent courses completed at another accredited college with a grade of C or better. Official transcripts from other colleges must be received no later than 5pm on the review deadline date in order to receive points. Related Surgical Technology Courses Grades/Points Possible Grade Received *BIO 163: Basic Anatomy & Physiology A= 25 pts; B=20 pts; C=15 (Please see footnote below) pts *BIO 175: General Microbiology A= 25 pts; B=20 pts; C=15 (Please see footnote below) pts ENG 111: Expository Writing A= 10 pts; B=6 pts; C=4 pts PSY 150: General Psychology A=5 pts; B=3 pts; C=1 pts Points Earned To receive credit and points for BIO 163 and BIO 175 (or equivalent), both courses must have been completed with grades of C or better within the last five years (2011-present). Item B: Documentation of related experience and awarded points Applicants will be awarded points on related experience. Supporting documentation must be on letterhead with the supervisor s signature and must include dates of work and/or volunteer experience and hours completed. Related work and volunteer experience must involve the care of human patients. Timesheets or paycheck stubs are not acceptable documentation.

Documentation of health-related certifications must be official and show dates of certification issuance and expiration. All documentation of related experience must be submitted to the Program Director. The following related work experience points are awarded upon review by the Surgical Technology Program Faculty: Points Type of Experience 3 points Current non-credit health-related certification (i.e., CNA, EMT, or Med Tech) 3 points Health-related work experience within the last five years: 3 months of full-time employment, OR 520 hours of part-time employment 3 points Health-related volunteer experience (100 hours or more, excluding educational clinical hours) within the last five years. 3 points College-level Health Sciences degree, diploma, or certificate from a regionallyaccredited college or university completed in the last five years. Candidates are selected starting with the applicant with the highest number of points and moving down the list until all class spaces are filled. The exact number of spaces available may vary from year to year. In the case of applicants with the same number of points earned, the applicant with the highest number of academic points will be ranked higher on the list. Item Total Possible Points Points Earned Completion of selected academic courses 65 Documentation of related experience 15 Earned degree 10 Hospital sponsorship The Class Candidate Lists will be forwarded to the Surgical Technology Program Director, who will send results letters to all candidates. All candidates who are not accepted into the program or who accept a space in the Fall 2016 program but DECLINE or WITHDRAW during the semester MUST REAPPLY and complete the entire admission process for the next year s class. The Orientation Session for Accepted Students Students who submitted forms by the review deadline will be screened by the Surgical Technology Program Director. Approximately four weeks after the May 31, 2016 review deadline has ended, students who have been accepted to the class will be contacted to attend a New Student Orientation with the Surgical Technology Program Director. The orientation will take place in June or July. The purpose of the orientation is to discuss required immunization forms, pre-schedule fall semester classes, and answer questions. For this reason, it is mandatory that the student attend this session or notify the Program Director in advance if unable to attend.
