CorCell Stem Cell Banking Protecting Your Family s Health

DEAR EXPECTANT PARENTS, Thank you for your interest in CorCell, and congratulations on the upcoming birth of your child. The day your child is born is a momentous occasion, and your child s continued excellent health is of primary importance. If your child s health becomes compromised, having options is important. Saving your baby s umbilical cord stem cells can give you those options. The regenerative cells found in your baby s umbilical cord can treat many life-threatening diseases, and ongoing stem cell research is uncovering more treatment possibilities every day. The bottom line... CorCell offers you peace of mind. This booklet should answer most of your questions about CorCell and stem cell banking and includes all the information you need to enroll. You can find more information at or by calling our 24-hour customer care center at (888) 882-CORD(2673) with any questions. Congratulations again on taking this first step toward helping secure your baby s tomorrow. Best wishes to you and your family s future, Joseph Vicente President, CorCell Companies, Inc.

BE PROACTIVE WITH YOUR CHILD S HEALTH Your baby s umbilical cord is an amazing source of powerful stem cells, which are the building blocks of your body. Saving these stem cells gives your child options when it comes to treating illness and access to any future treatments that may arise through emerging research. CORD BLOOD BENEFITS Cord Blood Stem Cells, A Life-Saving Resource for Disease Treatment Hematopoietic stem cells from cord blood have been used since 1988 to treat more than 80 life-threatening diseases, such as leukemia, anemia, non-hodgkin s lymphoma, other cancers and impaired immune systems. Research is pushing for more treatments every day. Cord blood stem cells save lives, and these stem cells are being researched to treat diseases that currently have no cure. Your Baby s Own Stem Cells Should your child require them, his or her own stem cells will always be a perfect match, meaning that there will be no time lost waiting for a donor or sitting on a transplant list while your child s condition worsens. Treatment time may be faster, and there is little chance of rejection, which dramatically increases the chances of a successful stem cell transplant. A Potential Match For Another Family Member If a family member s health is compromised, using your own family s stem cells instead of those from an unrelated donor can be advantageous. Siblings have a 25% chance of being a perfect match and a 50% chance of being a partial match. In addition, studies show that patients using cord blood from a related donor have a higher survival rate than those who receive stem cells from an unrelated source. Our son Jake was born with Bladder Extrophy, a rare birth defect. In the future Jake s stem cells may be able to be used for reconstructive repair to grow his own tissue, something his body won t reject because it is his own. This could mean a world of difference for the quality of life our son will have, and for that I am eternally grateful that we took the step to save his cord blood with CorCell. 4 WHY CORD BLOOD BANKING

Cord Blood Stem Cells Save Lives Use of umbilical cord blood as an alternate source of hematopoietic stem cells continually increases. To date, there have been over 30,000 cord blood transplants worldwide, and over 20,000 Americans have been saved by a cord blood transplant.* Our daughter Holland was born three years ago and we banked her cord blood with CorCell without thinking twice. I have Lupus and my daughter could inherit the Lupus gene you never know what may happen. Today, there are more than 10,000 stem cell clinical trials occurring around the world to address pervasive conditions such as cerebral palsy, heart disease, diabetes, lung disease, liver disease, lupus, Alzheimer s disease, multiple sclerosis, muscular dystrophy, Parkinson s disease, rheumatoid arthritis, spinal cord injury, stroke and more. WHY CORD BLOOD BANKING Emerging Cord Blood Research Autism (1 in 88 children are diagnosed in the United States.) Brain Injury (Leading cause of disability and death in children and adolescents nationwide.) Cerebral Palsy (Leading cause of childhood onset disability) Type 1 Diabetes (15,000 children are diagnosed every year) Juvenile Onset Diabetes * SOURCE: 4/14/2005

MEDICAL ADVANCEMENTS My mom was dying of ovarian cancer and decided that saving her grandchild s umbilical cord blood would be her gift to him. Since there is familial history of blood-related and other cancers in both mine and my husband s families, we decided to save all of our children s umbilical cord bloods. Maria Ydrach Puerto Rico

Preparing for the Future: Cord Tissue Stem Cells The power of stem cells does not stop at cord blood. A second stem cell type, called a mesenchymal stem cell, can be found in the tissues surrounding the umbilical cord veins and arteries. These stem cells differentiate into the body s connective tissues, which means that they can repair the body in different ways. There are over 200 clinical trials exploring the potential of cord tissue stem cells. Saving them with CorCell ensures that your family will have access to this emerging medical resource. Mesenchymal Stem Cell Potential Treatments Autoimmune diseases Skeletal diseases Ligament injury Diabetes Save both Cord Blood and Cord Tissue for More Options Cord Tissue Mesenchymal Stem Cells Creates connective tissues, including nerves, bones, muscles, ligaments. Being evaluated for regenerative therapies, including treatments for Alzheimer s, Arthritis, Stroke and Heart Disease. Easy to expand and refreeze, giving a potentially limitless supply. Neurological diseases Alzheimer s (1 in 3 seniors die with Alzheimer s or related dementia) Heart Disease (leading cause of death in the United States) Arthritis (1 in 5 Americans report having doctor-diagnosed arthritis) Cord Blood Hematopoietic Stem Cells Creates blood and immune system cells. Used in transplant medicine since Can currently treat over 80 life-threatening diseases. Being researched to treat conditions such as autism, brain injury, hearing loss, and type 1 diabetes. MEDICAL ADVANCEMENTS Cells do not cause an immune system response. Therefore, they can potentially be used for the entire family. 100% match for baby, potential match for family members. Storing Cord Tissue with CorCell CorCell gives your family a variety of options when it comes to saving this valuable stem cell. Save Cord Tissue Segment A segment of your baby s cord tissue is cryogenically preserved, safeguarding the stem cells within. This preserves other cells within the cord that may have restorative properties. 1 National Marrow Donor Program, 2009 Report to the Community
