4 CONSTITUENT PRINCIPLES In conformity with the principles of the Italian Constitution, Alma Mater Studiorum - University of Bologna is a public, independent, non-denominational and pluralistic institution. The primary goals of the University are teaching and research, two inseparable activities aimed at pursuing critical knowledge open to dialogue and interaction between cultures, respecting the freedom of science and teaching. 31 TEACHING SUPPORT University Linguistic Centre The CLA provides training and language skills assessment to both students and staff of the University of Bologna. University Library Organisation It includes 27 libraries providing 56 service points. More than 5,000 places for study and research. Access to over 600 databases, 44,955 on-line journals, 155,000 e-books. Collegio Superiore This is the University institution that promotes student merit from admission onwards, providing highly qualified and particularly interdisciplinary learning programmes. Alma English Project Unique of its kind in Italy, which guarantees the certified knowledge of the English language free of charge.

32 TEACHING SUPPORT Cultural activities and services Every year more than 450 extra-curricular activities are offered, many in collaboration with public and/or local institutions, targeting both students and the local community. These include meetings with important cultural figures from around the world, scientific communication and the promotion of social projects. University Museum Network A coordinated network of the 13 museums (including the Palazzo Poggi Museum) protecting and promoting the University's historical and artistic assets, facilitating their educational value.

48 UNIBO ARGENTINA,BRAZIL AND CHINA ARGENTINA The Alma Mater is the first experience of an Italian university branch abroad. It coordinates important research programmes, post graduate projects and academic collaboration with Latin America. CHINA The University of Bologna hosts one of Italy's most active branches of the Confucius Institute, and was recognised as the best of Local relations of the more than 800 Chinese students at Bologna are supported by the "Collegio di Cina" Association. BRAZIL The University was chosen by the Brazilian Government as national contact for the Science without borders project, involving 24 Universities, the National Research Council, Telecom Italia, the BIOGEM Research Centre and the National Institute of Nuclear Physics. Between 2011 and 2014 the University of Bologna coordinated the arrival of 3,296 grant recipients in Italy.

49 INSTITUTE FOR ADVANCED STUDIES The Institute provides the tools and means to host visiting professors and young international scholars in Bologna in order to contribute to the dissemination of new ideas and the exchange of knowledge. The Institute supports the participation of students from other countries in the PhD programmes running at the University of Bologna.
