17 Lesson Little-Endian data feed instead of specified Big-Endian Single bit error in thousands of lines of code Discovered at integration testing Prime asks sub to change spec and code because it ll take you an afternoon. It ll take us 2 months Don t think process will fix everything there are always humans involved
18 Organisation System Engineering managed under 29(!) working groups (WG) Poor communication between them Dysfunctional engineering operations Programme threatened by lack of progress...some were just talking shops
19 The lesson Deleted and merged WGs until only 8 left Forced engineers to communicate with each other! Forced issues to be resolved Ensured clear direction and focus Talking is not communicating - Its needs direction, structure and focus
20 What about System of Systems Engineering The planned combination of assets to achieve an objective or purpose where the assets were NOT contrived for the purpose were not necessarily design to work together. Operate a capability level Its about interfaces And information But mainly about people interactions

22 Requirements Management Every Requirement adds cost They don t all add value Delete requirements where you can Death, Taxes and Requirements change Its the way of the world... It s not a risk Plan and budget for change Not just change management Companies make a living on it! Every change costs you money
23 OGIDTOT Oh God I Didn t Think of That However well you plan there will always be something you didn t expect Its called risk and its unavoidable... But don t put any risks in that will affect the programme...
24 What is Systems Engineering? Systems Engineering is an interdisciplinary approach and means to enable the realization of successful systems. It focuses on defining customer needs and required functionality early in the development cycle, documenting requirements, then proceeding with design synthesis and system validation while considering the complete problem The combined interaction of technologies to achieve a specific objective
25 How is Systems Engineering Achieved? Systems Engineers are there to sustain an environment of communication between disciplines and stakeholders that fosters joint working and understanding Its about people We employ them for what they know What they know affects the way they communicate
