1 WHO SHOULD CONSIDER APPLYING FOR A NYSERDA GRANT WITH GROSOLAR? WHAT IS THE INITIAL PROCESS? 1) Speak to grosolar about your high energy use or available property. LARGE POWER USERS such as Towns & Cities or Manufacturers (minimum of $100k/ year) interested in purchasing renewable energy at a fixed rate that is at or below market prices for a year term. No capital cost for the installation is required, and you do not need to utilize your own property. LAND OWNERS who own 5-20 acres of open land that is suitable for large-scale solar projects, and would be interested in leasing the land for years. 2) Together we ll determine site and economic feasibility of a solar project. 3) If a project is feasible, we ll show our commitment to each other in moving forward by signing an LOI (Letter of Intent) or PPA (Power Purchase Agreement). There is no cost to the customer. 4) Once committed, grosolar will begin the interconnection and permitting process, which is required by NYSERDA prior to applying for the grant. 2 City of Rome Project Development: grosolar is the originating Project Developer for the City of Rome Landfill Project. In working with the City, grosolar handled the entire NYSERDA NY Sun Competitive PV Program (PON 2589) application, including detailed technical and financial analysis. During this analysis, grosolar completed a detailed review of the City s utility bills to determine both a cost saving Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) rate for the City and a competitive bid grant for NYSERDA. A significant amount of engineering has already been completed on the capped landfill site. grosolar has analyzed all existing environmental reports and studies for the landfill, and has conceptually designed a system that will minimize disturbance to existing site conditions. grosolar s team of experienced engineers specializes in environmentally sensitive sites, including landfills and brownfields, and has designed the system to meet and exceed all local and national building codes, as well as optimize energy production. Full permitting analysis and a detailed development and construction timeline have been created to ensure the project is finished on or ahead of schedule. Project Permitting: After initiating a request for proposals and interviewing several local firms, grosolar selected Shumaker Engineering & Land Surveying as the subcontractor to manage the environmental engineering and permitting process. Construction & Operations: grosolar will act as the full turnkey Engineering, Procurement and Construction firm and will perform O&M services for the life of the project. 5 Solar Energy Supply Options for Municipalities Longwood Gardens, PA Open greenfields and undeveloped land allow for large scale solar projects. Typically a minimum of five or six acres will equate to a 1 MW project. Sterling Municipal Solar, MA Community residents may have unused farms or land to be used for solar projects. The municipal receives energy savings, the resident earns lease payments. 6 Solar Systems on Brownfields Capped Landfill Design of Photovoltaic System on a Capped Landfill: Inverters & Interconnection converts DC to 13kV AC Above Ground Electrical Raceways no cap penetration The engineering and design of the photovoltaic (PV) system considers the sensitive design elements of the landfill cap system and the vegetation. Special consideration is placed on the bearing pressure, storm water management, and protection of the cover to prevent erosion or damage. The design accounts for the operations and maintenance requirements of the PV system and the landfill cap. Racking System & Electrical Raceways: The module racking structure is mounted on concrete ballasts. The ballast is designed to minimize bearing pressure and protect the cap system and the vegetative cover. Electrical raceways are constructed above ground to avoid penetration of the cap and special consideration is taken to provide access for maintenance activities such as grass cutting. Storm Water & Landfill Gas Management: Ballasted Racking Structure no cap disturbance The PV system design considers site features such as storm water management and gas venting and gas collection systems. Special consideration for worker protection may be discussed during the design of the PV system and the site-specific health and safety plans.
