Study abroad courses must fall within the parameters of a liberal arts curriculum at Harvard College. Credit will not be granted for pre-professional courses; these include accounting, agronomy, education, business, marketing, communications, journalism, clinical medicine/psychology, etc. Courses taken abroad cannot count towards General Education requirements. Print and attach your student record and syllabi for your proposed study abroad courses. Complete Sections I and II with the required information. Obtain signature from your Resident Dean or Resident Dean of Freshmen in Section III. Complete Section IV if you are requesting concentration, secondary field or language credit. Complete Section V if you are requesting elective credit. Remember to attach a 750-word statement of purpose with this request. Submit the completed form and required materials to the OIE before February 11 th or to OIE representatives at OCS (54 Dunster Street) on February 11 th. Apply directly to your study abroad program for admission.

5 Section V. Elective Course Pre-Approvals If you are requesting elective credit for any of your study abroad courses, complete this section. No faculty signatures are needed. Once you have submitted the application, your courses will be reviewed by an Elective Credit Committee. The OIE will notify you if the proposed courses have been approved or denied for credit. Essay Requirement for Elective Course Credit A 750-word statement of purpose is required for all students applying for elective course credit for summer study abroad. The statement should describe the study abroad program, the student s academic preparation for the program (e.g., coursework, language proficiency), and how the program and courses fit into the student s academic plan and/or professional goals.
