1 TEAL Online Logout College of Science/Psychology Mission Statement The psychology program at Coastal Carolina University is comprised of a group of highly qualified and motivated teacher-scholars dedicated to a comprehensive range of specialty areas within the field of psychology. Our mission is to provide a premier undergraduate psychology education for students from the region, state, nation, and world, by creating and disseminating information about human behavior, thought, and emotion. Consistent with the University s comprehensive orientation, our curriculum provides students with theoretical knowledge and practical skills necessary to investigate questions important to the human condition from a scientific perspective, emphasizing critical thinking and communication skills in a collaborative environment. In addition, we strive to foster the personal and professional growth of our students by offering extensive and varied opportunities for integrative experiential learning, including faculty/student collaborative research and community-based internships. Goals for Student Learning Outcomes Goal 1 Strategic Goal(s) : 1 Meeting the Educational Needs of Students and Community Students will improve reading, writing, speaking, and critical thinking skills in the context of psychological study. Student Learning Outcome: 1 Students will learn to read and interpret psychological research studies. Assessment of Goal 1 (research methods, overall) will include evaluation based upon the assessment instrument developed by Pearson Education utilizing the American Psychological Association (APA) guidelines for assessment of undergraduate psychology programs. Based on identified developmentally-appropriate competencies the APA Pearson produced an assessment item test bank for the APA goals of Knowledge Base of Psychology, Research Methods in Psychology, Critical Thinking Skills in Psychology, Application of Psychology, and Values in Psychology. The items within this test bank have specific outcomes areas that are assessed at three different academic competency levels; Basic Level (retention and comprehension), Developing Level (analysis and application), Advanced Level (evaluation and creation). Additionally, these items have been classified in terms of Bloom s Taxonomy. Specifically, Student Learning Outcome 1-A (Goal 1, SLO 1) is evaluated in Psyc 101 and 497 and includes end-of-semester administration of 50
2 test items selected by psychology faculty from the Pearson Education Assessment Test Item bank corresponding to APA goal of Research Methods in Psychology. These test items are embedded in final exam for students enrolled in selected sections of General Psychology (Psyc 101) and the Capstone Senior Research Class for Psychology (Psyc 497). Student Learning Outcome: 2 Students will critically evaluate and describe research relevant to a selected topic of investigation. Specifically, Student Learning Outcome 1-B (Goal 1, SLO 2) is Student Learning Outcome: 3 Students will demonstrate knowledge of APA writing style.. Specifically, Student Learning Outcome 1-C (Goal 1, SLO 3) is

Student Learning Outcome: 1 Students will demonstrate appropriate applications of the APA Code of Ethics. Specifically, Student Learning Outcome 2A (Goal 2, SLO 1) is evaluated in Psyc 101 and 497 and includes end-of-semester administration of 50 test items selected by psychology faculty from the Pearson Education Assessment Test Item bank corresponding to APA goal of Research Methods in Psychology.
