1 Overview Supply Chain Management Deliver Course
2 Course Goal The availability of drugs and other essential supplies determines the success of any health program. Without a reliable supply of contraceptives, a family planning program cannot serve its customers; without appropriate drugs, a tuberculosis program cannot offer treatment. An effective AIDS treatment program requires an uninterrupted supply of antiretroviral drugs. The efficient management of health commodities is imperative in the current environment of increasing demand and limited resources. Therefore effective inventory management of health commodities determines to a greater extent the effective delivery of any health system. It has an impact on all functions of any health system including finance. To be effective, health systems need to manage health commodities in a logical and consistent manner. S BUYS ACADEMY, in partnership with the USAID DELIVER PROJECT, will be offering its introductory course in Supply Chain Management. At the end of this course, participants will be able to assess stock status, improve storage and warehousing conditions, and serve as an advocate for logistics and implement change in their own systems.
3 Areas of Learning Participants will engage in a range of activities, including simulation, case study, field trip, demonstrations, and exercises which will provide participants with the opportunity to increase their knowledge and skills in topics such as: Logistics Management Information Systems Inventory Control Systems Storage & Quality Assurance Logistics System Assessment, Monitoring & Evaluation Interrelationship of Policy and Supply Chain Basic forecasting Basic quantification and procurement planning The exact content of the course will be adapted to address the needs of participants specific to the health programs with which they work. Who should Attend Individuals who are responsible for planning, managing, or monitoring family planning, AIDS prevention and treatment or other health commodity logistics systems at the national level, either in the public or private sector. Specific responsibilities may include: Plans, implements, and/or assists with activities designed to strengthen the supply chain Provides technical assistance on logistics Uses information for planning and managing programs Improves product availability Responsible for the completion and receipt of LMIS records/reports Determines order quantities Responsible for the storage and distribution of health commodities Assesses stock status at local and/or national levels This course is also highly relevant for in-country managers from donor agencies that provide health commodities. The course will be conducted in English.
4 Important Facts Facilitators S BUYS ACADEMY facilitators with excellent understanding of the local environment will deliver the course. These facilitators not only have considerable knowledge of logistics theory, but also have first-hand experience assessing and designing country-specific logistics systems. Location The course will be presented in Potchefstroom, South Africa. Potchefstroom is a picturesque university town about 120km from Johannesburg (travelling time usually about an hour and fifteen minutes). Visas Visa requirements will depend on the participant s country of origin. Please contact your local South African embassy or High Commission for more information.
