Applications must be submitted via online links, accessible through Community Foundation of Western Nevada s website: The application deadline for most scholarships is February 28*. This Scholarship Listing presents the scholarships offered in several ways: Geographic area and school enrollment Traditional and nontraditional Alphabetical order Read through the entire document to ensure you apply for ALL scholarships for which you are eligible. Scholarships are for school related expenses and are to be used only at accredited institutions, unless specifically noted. Checks are made payable to awardees schools. The Community Foundation reserves the right to modify any award amount, date, or other criteria at any time due to legal, fund, or market conditions. Due to time and publication issues, some items in this listing may change. 4 Northern Nevada & California Alan G. Bain Initiative in Science or Math Up to $500 Awards given: Up to 2 Student Type: Nontraditional - students in 9-12 grade in Nevada high school in the following counties: Churchill, Lander, Lyon, Mineral, Pershing, Storey; and White Pine, and; also eligible are students in Gerlach High School and Pyramid Lake High School. Area: Northern Nevada No 1) Letters of recommendation from teachers, mentors, or others may be attached, 2) Project description (see Project Description in the letter to applicants by Mr. Bain at the beginning of the online application). No other types of attachments should be submitted. The Alan G. Bain Initiative in Science or Math Award rewards students in 9-12 grade for their achievements in science or math, particularly that which is outside the usual science and/or math core curriculum. Recipients will be chosen based on their project description and initiative shown in pursuing their topic. URL: Jack & Jane Becker College Scholarship Up to $1,000 Awards given: up to 3 Student Type: Nontraditional Area: University of Nevada-Reno Yes, with reapplication. 1) Transcript; 2) First page of most recent tax return; 3) Verification of enrollment at UNR; 4) Reference letter from UNR professor or counselor; 5) One-page essay about why you want to become a medical doctor, what your practice will focus on, and how this scholarship will help you achieve your goal. Applicants are qualified 4 th -year students majoring in pre-med and current medical students at the University of Nevada, Reno. Students must be graduates of Nevada high schools and be current Nevada residents. Students who meet the above criteria and who demonstrate great financial need will be considered. 5 Orville Belding Memorial Scholarship Up to $1,000 Area: Washoe County, Nevada No 1) Transcript, 2) State of Nevada birth certificate, 3) Coach sponsor endorsement, 4) Essay that answers these prompts: What impact have sports had on your life? How have sports helped prepare you for the future? Where do you see yourself in five years from now? You are a student athlete; you were born and raised in Nevada; your family income shows a need for tuition assistance; you are a Washoe County High School senior; you have a minimum 1500/SAT or 20/ACT score. URL: Peggy Bowker Memorial Scholarship for Women in Engineering Up to $5,000 Student Type: Area: Traditional and Nontraditional. Priority will be given to 1) applicants from the state of Nevada 2) those currently enrolled in the College of Engineering at the University of Nevada, Reno 3) high school students with an aptitude in science and math Yes. Scholarships may be single or multi-year. 1) Transcript, 2) Recommendation by school official and/or agencies or organizations where student has volunteered, 3) Essay in 450 words or less, address both of these topics: a. Setting your personal goals and achieving them--why it's important to you; b. the value of an engineering education to you and your community Applicants are female and may be entering freshman, returning students, or nontraditional students. Applicants are pursuing an engineering degree from University of Nevada-Reno. Need to demonstrate goal setting and achievement through 3.0 GPA from high school and 2.5 GPA for previous college grades and other activities. Must carry a minimum of 12 units per semester. 6 Kendyl Ruth Williams Depoali Memorial Scholarship Up to $2,000 Student Type: Nontraditional Area: Washoe County School District, Nevada With reapplication. 1) Proof of employment or internship with WCSD, 2) two letters of recommendation: one from a teacher, university advisor, mentor professor, site administrator; 3) Essay (maximum of two pages) that addresses all of the following topics: Why I am continuing my education in my chosen content area How I will apply what I learn in my classroom How receiving this scholarship will help me complete my advanced degree Anything you want the committee to know about you Applicants are currently employed or interning with Washoe County School District System, are currently enrolled in the Teacher Licensure Program, and are continuing their education at University of Nevada-Reno or Sierra Nevada College. URL: Robert & Judy Dreiling Scholarship Up to $5,000 + Student Type: Northern Nevada residents who are high school graduates or who have earned a high school equivalency certificate and adults seeking education to attain better, more sustainable employment Area: Northern Nevada residents With reapplication. See below. To support students in northern Nevada who have received their high school diploma or high school equivalency certificate. The ideal candidates will be enrolled in an Associate s Degree track or certificate program at the school of their choice; the degree track or certificate program should result in a good lead to a good job. The scholarship will pay up to $5,000 for an Associate s Degree or certificate program at private trade schools or community colleges for one or more candidates. You will be asked to write brief essays discussing: your life, your plans for the future, why you chose your certificate program, how your education will impact your life and your family. 7 Ezzysgift Scholarship Up to $5,000 + Student Type: Washoe County high school students or freshmen enrolled in a 2- or 4-year institution Area: Washoe County, Nevada residents No. See below. To support students in northern Nevada who have an artistic spirit, with a focus on evidence of creativity, innovation, energy, and community mindedness. Financial need may be a consideration. Students may attend schools anywhere, and awards may be made for tuition, equipment, and other educational needs. Counselors or teachers may nominate students. Applications may include videos or links to videos of the student/artist, academic records, financial information to verify financial need, and other materials that help demonstrate the student s creativity, innovation, energy, and community mindedness. Clarence CJ Jones Memorial Scholarship Up to $500 Area: Washoe County School District AACT No 1) Transcript, 2) Reference letter from one of your AACT teachers or counselor, 3) First two pages of your or your parents most recent tax return, 4) One-page essay about your career plans. The Clarence CJ Jones Memorial Scholarship is offered to qualified senior students at the Washoe County School AACT. Awardee will be selected on financial need, academic performance, and extra-curricular activities. URL: Page 7 of 20

8 William and Martha Karraker Scholarship Up to $750 Deadline: Contact Stockton Community Theater Student Type: Nontraditional Area: Stockton, California No None Awardee is nominated by the Board of Directors of the Stockton Community Theater and is based on participation in the theater. Awardees can be in 9-12 grades in high school. Award is payable upon graduation. Kennedy Scholarship Up to $35,000 Deadline: April 10 Area: Northern Nevada Yes, with reapplication 1) Letter of acceptance, 2) Financial Aid package, 3) Essay telling how you and your parents are going to financially contribute to your education. Applicants are from northern Nevada (cities and counties north of Tonopah), have graduated from a northern Nevada high school, and have been accepted to one of 18 top U.S. universities and colleges specified by the donors. UC schools will not be accepted. Preference is given to students from ranching and mining families. Contact the Community Foundation for the list of schools. 9 General Fred Michel Career in Aviation Scholarship Up to $1,000-5 Area: Northern Nevada Yes, with reapplication 1) Transcript; 2) SAT or ACT Scores (must be verified by authorized school personnel); 3) 1-2 letters of recommendation from counselors, teachers, or professionals (not family members) who can attest to your interest in aviation; 4) Essay: Tell us about your interest in a career in an aviation-related field. Applicants: provide strong evidence of interest in aviation as a career, are a senior graduating from a northern Nevada high school, enrolled in or accepted to an accredited 4-year college, are pursuing a degree in a field related to aviation, have a minimum 2.75 GPA, and have a minimum 1000 SAT and/or a minimum 20 ACT URL: Nevada Veterinary Medical Association Up to $1,000 Deadline: Contact Nevada Veterinary Medical Association Student Type: Nontraditional Area: Western United States Yes, with reapplication See below. 10 Northern Nevada Youth Scholarship Up to $2,000 + Area: Northern Nevada, including Washoe, Carson City, Douglas, Lyon, and Storey counties; also Mineral, Churchill, Pershing, and Humboldt counties Yes, with reapplication See below. To support the student who will not qualify for other scholarships based on GPA but demonstrates commitment, passion, and drive. This student will not be eligible for high G.P.A. scholarships or the Millennium scholarship and has shown a renewed dedication to their studies and increased their G.P.A. over their junior and senior year. The scholarship will pay up to $2,000 for certificate programs at private trade schools, Truckee Meadows Community College, Western Nevada Community College, and University of Nevada, Reno. Nominated students will be asked to write brief essays discussing: your life, your plans for the future, why you chose your certificate program, how your education will impact your life, and how your life has changed in the last two years. Student applicants must be nominated for this scholarship by a teacher or counselor. The nominating teacher/counselor must provide a letter of support for your application. URL: NV Energy Powerful Partnerships Up to $1,000 Awards given: Up to 30 Deadline: March 1 ; those not related to NV Energy employees as well as NV Energy dependent children Area: NV Energy s northern Nevada service area No 1) Transcript, 2) Evidence of enrollment at an accredited institution of higher education, 3) Student information, 4) Financial statement, 5) Personal profile, 6) Letter of recommendation from a school official, 7) 1-3 letters of recommendation from agency or organization where student has volunteered. This scholarship is open to both the general public and dependent children of NV Energy employees. Applicants are U.S. citizens or legal permanent residents, demonstrate academic success with a minimum 3.0 unweighted GPA on a 4.0 scale, and have the goal of pursuing a degree at an accredited institution of higher education. Scholarship is awarded based on selection criteria and the number of applications received. Graduating high school seniors in public and private schools as well as the home schooled are encouraged to apply. The scholarship recognizes the Page 10 of 20

11 accomplishments of high school students who have demonstrated leadership in academics and community service, and completed 20 hours of community service within the previous 12 months as validated by school counselor, agency or organization. 12 Read With Me Preschool Scholarship Up to $7,500 Awards given: Up to 2. Deadline: April 30 Student Type: Nontraditional. Preschool students aged years old. Area: Washoe County, Nevada With reapplication. 1) Essay explaining family circumstances that make this scholarship necessary for the family to send the child to preschool. Children must be between 2.5 and 5 years old at time of application and must demonstrate an aptitude for reading. Priority will be given to families with economic need and children who have family support for reading. Parent must be able to transport children to approved preschools. Applicants will be screened by a qualified expert in early childhood education prior to being considered by the selection committee. Scholarships will be made to select schools; contact the Community Foundation for the list. URL: Reno Pops Orchestra Scholarship Up to $500. Deadline: April 30 and Nontraditional Area: Washoe County, Nevada No 1) Transcript; 2) Resume; 3) Well-written letter expressing your future plans, music s impact in your life, and how you plan to keep music as part of your future. Applicants must be participants in Reno Pops Orchestra and must be committed to making music a part of their life. 13 Officer Mike Scofield Memorial Scholarship Up to $1,000 Student Type: Nontraditional Area: Washoe County, Nevada Yes 1) Transcript, 2) Documentation of fees and tuition for your intended school, 3) Personal reference letter from a person in your church leadership, 4) Essay that answers these points: 1. Give a brief testimony of how you came to Christ and how He has worked in your life since then. 2. Describe your goals for the education for which you are requesting financial assistance. 3. Provide some details on areas of ministry with which you have been involved. The Officer Mike Schofield Memorial Scholarship supports graduates of northern Nevada high schools that: regularly attend a Bible-based church, are currently attending an accredited college or university, are enrolled as a full-time student, have financial need. Applicants will agree to maintain a 2.5 GPA and provide official transcripts at the end of each semester. Applicants must also agree to report all other financial support to the Community Foundation each semester (grants, scholarships, etc.) URL: Page 13 of 20

14 Ron & Linda Smith Family Scholarship Up to $1,000 Deadline: April 30 Student Type: Nontraditional Area: Northern Nevada Yes 1) Transcript, 2) Documentation Essay that answers these points: 1. What are your goals and how will this scholarship help you achieve them 2. Where do you see yourself five years from now and how will your education be of value to your community 3. What do you want the committee reviewing your application to know about you that is not apparent from the rest of this application The Ron & Linda Smith Family Scholarship is offered to a Northern Nevada resident attending Truckee Meadows Community College, Western Nevada College, or Great Basin College, who is pursuing a degree or certificate program. The Ron & Linda Smith Family Scholarship is designed for a student who is a U.S. Citizen is a graduating high school senior or re-entry student has a high school diploma or equivalency is a resident of Northern Nevada is pursuing a degree or certificate from TMCC, WNC, or GBC URL: Nicole Snyder Memorial Scholarships Varying Amounts; minimum of $1,000 Awards given: multiple Deadline: April 1 Area: Douglas County, Nevada No 1) Transcript, 2) Two letters of recommendation, 3) Autobiography, 4) Essay describing how sports play a positive role in your life. Nicole Snyder Memorial Scholarships are offered annually and are open to Douglas High School students pursuing university, college, community college, trade school, technical institute, vocational training, or other post-secondary education programs. The award requires that you participate in a varsity sports program in the current academic year. 15 Eugene & Nadine Stegelmeyer Scholarship Up to $500 and Nontraditional Area: Washoe County, Nevada No 1) Transcript, 2) Resume, 3) One letter of recommendation from a teacher; 4) Essay on why you are interested in teaching or why you are interested in geriatrics. SAT or ACT score report (if you are still in high school). Eligible students are graduating seniors in a Washoe County High School (or students pursuing post-secondary or graduate studies in teaching and/or geriatrics) who will attend teaching and/or geriatric programs through a community or junior college, private school, or accredited college or university in or outside of Nevada. Minimum GPA of 3.0, minimum 1500 SAT or 18 ACT (if still in high school). URL: John R. Stockman Scholarship Up to $5,000 Deadline: April 30 Area: Eligible applicants are high school and home school seniors from Washoe, Douglas, Carson City, Storey, Lyon, and Churchill counties, and South Lake Tahoe High School. Yes, with reapplication 1) Transcript; 2) SAT or ACT score report; 3) Letter of recommendation from a teacher, coach, or counselor; 4) Letter of recommendation from a community organization, peer, or non-family member; 5) Essay. You: are a graduating senior from high school or home school in Washoe, Douglas, Carson City, Storey, Lyon, and Churchill counties, and South Lake Tahoe High School; have a minimum 3.2 cumulative high school GPA; have a minimum 1200 SAT or minimum 22 ACT; submit two letters of recommendation one each from a teacher, coach, or peer; submit a 1-2 page essay detailing aspirations for college and beyond, describing how you will support yourself through 4 years of college, and illustrates why paying for college is difficult; prove acceptance to a 4-year accredited college or university prior to scholarship payment. You will be required to submit your financial aid package and permit CFWN to speak with the Financial Aid Counselor at your school of choice. Applicants are eligible to apply for renewal if they prove they have maintained a 12-unit minimum course load per semester, a 2.8 cumulative GPA. Interested students should contact the Loyalton and Portola High Schools scholarship offices for application information. Zonta TMCC Re-entry Scholarship Up to $1,500 Awards given: Several Student Type: Nontraditional Area: Washoe County, Nevada Yes, with reapplication 1) Transcript; 2) Verification of current enrollment by school official; 3) Two letters of recommendation from adults not related to the applicant, such as teachers, school officials, or community leaders; 4) Statement of current financial status: include all sources of income (wages, child support, spousal support, scholarships and grants, loans, etc.); 5) Brief essay stating: short term goals (personal & academic) and life/career goals; 6) Essay (200 words maximum) describing yourself, your motivation, and why you are a good candidate to receive this award. 6) Brief essay describing how you are currently making ends meet. Applicants must be registered with the TMCC Re-entry Center. Supporting documentation not requested will not be considered. All applications and supporting information become the property of Zonta International. Zonta International has final authority over any aspect of the Awards. Southern Nevada Claudine Williams Harrah s Employee Scholarship Fund Up to $3,000 Awards given: Several and Nontraditional Area: Las Vegas, Nevada Yes 1) Transcript; 2) A one page essay that tells the Committee something about yourself that is not revealed in your application. Also, the essay should address your motivation in choosing your school and tell about your career goals. You are eligible to apply for a scholarship if: your parent or guardian is a full-time employee of Harrah s Las Vegas at grade L14 or below (including all H and S grades) your parent has been employed with Harrah s Las Vegas for at least three consecutive years by application deadline, and is still employed by Harrah s Entertainment Inc., even if at another property your family income shows a need for tuition assistance you are a high school senior or are currently attending college with a minimum cumulative 2.75 GPA you have a minimum composite SAT of 1000 or 20/ACT score or have attended at least one semester of college you agree to release confidential attendance and GPA information for review of annual scholarship renewal. 18 Nevada Phil & Jennifer Satre Scholarship Fund Up to $5,000 Awards given: Several Area: Nevada Yes 1) Transcript; 2) One-page essay that tells the Committee something about you, your interests and goals things that are not revealed in your application. Also, the essay should address your motivation in choosing your school. 3) a copy of your ACT or SAT scores if they are not indicated on your transcript You are eligible to apply for a scholarship if you meet all of the following requirements: 1) your parent or guardian is a full-time employee of Caesar s Entertainment (Formerly Harrah s Entertainment Inc.) at any Caesar s property in Nevada; 2) your parent or guardian has been employed with the company for at least three consecutive years on the date the application is submitted; 3) your parent or legal guardian is an hourly, nonmanagement salaried, or management grade L14 and below employee; 4) your family income shows a need for tuition assistance; 5) you are a senior graduating from a Nevada high school with a minimum cumulative 3.2/ 87 GPA; 6) you have a minimum 1500/Combined SAT or 24/ACT score.
