3 strategies to increase the efficiency of your roofing company
3 strategies to increase the efficiency of your roofing company Increasing day to day job efficiency is crucial to running a profitable roofing company. In this article, you will find strategies that you can begin implementing immediately in order to save on costs and increase profitably. streamline processes Processes should be consistent, efficient, & focus on the company s strengths. Implementing company wide procedures can be an easy way to increase efficiency and ultimately improve profits. We will give you some areas and ideas to focus on when creating new procedures. minimize debris When you minimize the need for clean up and the risk of damage, you will have happier employees and customers. We have an industry changing solution to help you minimize debris while increasing efficiency. keep employees productive Jobs are completed more quickly when employees are efficient, and it is in the company s best interest to keep their employees on track and feeling valued. You have the ability to lower costs and increase profits by focusing on your employees, and we will go over a few strategies that will make a big difference.
How to Increase Job Efficiency in the Roofing Industry It can be hard to: change processes that have become embedded in your company s structure look beyond your current projects when they consume all of your time keep your employees safe and working at their full capacity Fortunately, there are some simple, concrete steps to help you improve one area of your business that will have lasting impacts on your company as whole. Job efficiency is the key to bringing in more money while also reducing the amount of money that flies out the door. Anyone can understand that completing roofing projects more quickly results in being able to do a higher total number of projects annually. From there you can also reason that more projects means more money for your growing business. take your business to places you never dreamed possible 1
How to Increase Job Efficiency in the Roofing Industry An example of job efficiency: A day on the job typically consists of 10 hours with a 5 man crew made up of employees being paid an average of $18 per hour. That day will cost your company $900 in labor alone. However, if you are able to complete the project 20% more quickly, with 8 hours with the 5 man crew, you will save with a $180 each day. Once you incorporate that 20% increase in efficiency into your company s daily structure, you will be saving over $60,000 a year in labor costs alone. The numbers makes it very clear that efficiency is crucial to the profitability of your business, but how do you increase day to day job efficiency? There are three concepts that will be discussed along with industry specific advice for how to implement these strategies into your own company. streamline processes minimize debris keep employees productive 2
Streamline Processes Each company s process is going to look a little different, but the most important thing is that the processes that are put into place are consistent, efficient, and focus on the company s strengths. Implementing company wide procedures can be an easy way to increase efficiency and ultimately improve profits. Having these processes in place also makes it much easier to grow your company without sacrificing quality of service. It becomes easier to train new employees, keep current employees working at their full capacity, and take on new projects. When coming up with new strategies, there are a few things to think about to ensure an efficient plan for your roofing company. You will need: well-trained employees time-saving equipment motivating payment structures Well-trained employees Employees can work more efficiently when they know the expectations. Each employee should have assigned tasks and a timeline to do them. They should know their role on a job site. They need to accomplish their tasks without interference. They need the support of the company and knowledge that they will be able to complete a job to the best of their ability and utilize their own personal strengths. Laying out procedures will also help reduce the need for extra employees on each job site, which allows you take on more jobs and save on labor costs. 3
Streamline Processes While well-trained employees are key to increasing productivity... time-saving equipment Investing in equipment, tools, and technology also becomes an important part of any streamlined process. Purchasing the right equipment for your company can get you a solid return on your investment by: increasing productivity becoming a marketing tool limiting the amount of resources needed per project Companies who began using the Equipter RB4000 reported reduced labor costs and increased revenue resulting in an extra $60,000 annually. 4
Streamline Processes Another key to increasing job efficiency is... motivating payment structures You will have to determine which types of payment structures work best for your company so that efficiency, as well as quality, are rewarded. Hourly compensation can encourage workers to pay close attention to quality standards or paying per project can encourage efficiency. Once you have streamlined procedures in place, you will notice that your employees will: work better together work more efficiently with great tools be more motivated This means that you will not need as many employees per job and will be able to take on more projects, which of course increases your overall profit substantially. 5
Minimize Debris Debris clean up is never a roofer s favorite job, and it is usually assigned to the employees just starting out. It is very time consuming and exhausting to have some employees tearing off shingles while other employees are assigned to carry the shingles to the dump site. It would be considerably better for everyone if you could eliminate the worst part of the job clean up. There is equipment available, such as Equipter s RB4000, that enables roofers to tear off shingles and dispose of them in one step without needing a separate team of employees. This equipment can be driven to the work site, driven to the edge of a garden bed, extended up to the roof, and be made easily accessible to all employees working on the roof. Once the Equipter RB4000 is full, it turns into a dump trailer, which eliminates the need for heavy lifting at that stage as well. One of New Jersey s largest steep-slope roofing contractors used Equipter for a large project and stated, We rented two Equipters as a precaution, said Ross Marzarella, ACX s vice president of Operations/Principal. We completed the roof on time using only one Equipter. It saved us about $100,000 in additional labor costs. You can read the details about this particular case study here for more information about their savings. 6
Minimize Debris There should be processes in place to make each roofing job run smoothly. Incorporating Equipter into your process can also help you leave job sites in the same condition that you found them. This type of roofing equipment is made to keep customers lawns clean and undisturbed, which eliminates the need to search for scrap metal and other dangerous debris amongst beautiful landscaping. It can also help you avoid damage claims, which can become very costly and could cause you to lose a significant amount of business. It is always important to take extra care while on a customers property. Taking your time to set up and not rush through a job, may actually end up saving you time by reducing the need for extra clean up once the job is finished. Establishing yourself as a roofing company who respects customers properties and works efficiently will help your business grow significantly. Not only will you gain new referrals, because your prior customers are happy, you will reduce costly complaints as well. Significant amounts of money can be saved when you reduce the number of people asking for discounts, refunds, or replacement fees because of damage that you may have caused while on site. Debris management 7
Keep EMployees productive Fortunately once you implement the above strategies, you will quickly see improvement in your employees productivity as well. Employees will: know their role within the company and be able to focus on doing their job well stay motivated because of a fair and strategic payment structure stay at the forefront of their field with state of the art equipment reduce overuse injuries and lessen their daily stress with proper equipment focus on the part of the job that they enjoy most without having to deal with strenuous clean up work complete projects quickly You will need fewer employees per job site once they are working efficiently, and all of this directly affects your bottom line in a very positive way. Taking care of your employees well-being will also absolutely help your bottom line and help you build a more profitable company. Happy and healthy employees means: fewer workers compensation claims fewer sick days lower insurance rates You will have better employee retainment rates and be able to save money by having well-trained professionals stay with your company rather than having to continually train new employees. And of course, your employees will do better work and provide better customer service to your clients when they are feeling valued. 8
Keep EMployees productive The Ohio Bureau of Workers Compensation ran a study that concluded the following. After an average follow-up period of 231 days, seven construction companies that received lift assists, aids and/or transport devices, achieved the following results: CTD incident rate (incidents per 200,000 hours) changed from 2.1 to 0 a 100 percent improvement ROI for material handling aids is 2.4 years Days lost due to CTDs decreased from 329 days per 200,000 hours worked to 0 a 100 percent improvement Restricted days due to CTDs improved from 32.7 days per 200,000 hours worked to 0 a 100 percent improvement Turnover rate (per 200,000 hours worked) changed from 21.6 to 11.7 a 46 percent improvement Average risk factor score for 10 affected tasks in the four companies was 41.8 before the devices were put into place, and was 28.3 afterwards a 32 percent improvement Roofing companies who have purchased Equipter products have also seen similar results. Companies using the Equipter RB4000 report increased productivity of between 25% and 30%, and employees have reported that they enjoy using this equipment because it helps make their job easier and literally less painful. 9
Conclusion Increasing job efficiency in the roofing industry is mainly about simplifying. Investing time and money into the right areas of your business today will make your life much easier tomorrow. You and your employees will begin to work smarter, rather than harder, and enjoy an increase in profits because of your attention to efficiency throughout the company. 1 Discuss and create company wide processes that focus on the strengths of your individual employees as well as the company as a whole. 2 Evaluate employee payment structures and change as necessary so that employees are being rewarded for efficient and quality work. 3 Purchase equipment that will increase productivity by simplifying debris management while also reducing employee fatigue and injury. 4 Keep your employees happy by offering fair payment structures, providing them with proper equipment, and outlining expectations. 5 Reduce expensive damage claims by taking proper steps to leave customers properties the way you found them. If you have questions about any of these strategies, would like to discuss the needs of your company, or are interested in Equipter products, please contact us.
