1 UNIVERSITY OF THE CORDILLERAS Graduate School DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY IN EDUCATIONAL MANAGEMENT (Ph.D. Ed. Mgmt.) PROGRAM DESCRIPTION This academic degree program is designed to provide the knowledge, research skills, attitudes and values relevant to the academic development of teachers and school administrators as well as those wanting to master the craft of an education supervisor. Basically, this course deals with the different facets of school management. This academic degree program shall develop creative, innovative, dynamic and productive school leaders willing to institute transformative educational processes. OBJECTIVES This academic degree program aims to: 1. develop a critical understanding of the global society 2. strengthen decision-making skills with varied educational concerns and issues 3. maximize research skills ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS 1. Master s degree holder in educational management, administration and supervision and other related fields Non-thesis master s degree holder and non-related field will have to enroll in 15 units of education courses in the master s level and will be required to conduct an action research. 3 Basic Courses: DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY IN EDUCATION MANAGEMENT Course Description B800 B801 B802 B803 Philosophy of Man Deals with a general introduction to philosophy and an intensive study of man in all his dimensions. This course studies the philosophical genres from both Eastern and Western views of man as the central focus of analysis and inquiries across the ages: ancient, medieval, modern and contemporary. ( 3units) Philosophical Foundations of Educational Management Philosophical foundations of developmental dimensions of educational management; basic education and higher education survey of management principles (3 units) Advanced Research in Educational Management Theory and design of research and inquiry in various applications of models and research procedures; qualitative and quantitative researches, preparation of research proposal, action research, classroom-based research. ( 3units) Philosophy of Filipino Management This course shows how philosophy in general and the various philosophies in particular would provide basic foundations for good management. Heavy emphasis is on the Filipino philosophy of management. (3 units) Major Courses: M804 M805 M806 Educational Management in Cross Cultural Environment and Special Population and Services Provide educational principles, insights, background, and cases into the life styles, values, goals and aspirations of the minority and the special population. Administration of special educational programs. Help administrators, counselors, supervisors/superintendents and teachers develop, operate and evaluate special services and cross cultural environment. (3 units) Leadership Roles and Functions of a School Head Roles of the elementary school principal and secondary school principal in the organization and administration of the school levels; instructional leadership; organizational development; professional development; community partnership; industry linkage and communication; roles and functions of top management and middle management. The role of the superintendent of schools as chief executive education officer. Includes leadership in interprofessional education such as study of programs, policies and issues related to collaborative, family-centered, community -based education, health and human services systems. (3 units) Advance Strategic Management
4 Deals with the concepts, principles and theories of Strategic Management. Special emphasis is given on strategic planning as a management tool to help an organization do a better job. (3 units) M807 M808 M809 M810 Financial Resource Management Complete survey of the field of financial resource management in the different levels of education; examination of approaches to annual, capital, and planned giving, the administration and public relations aspect of educational fund raising; governance and financing applied to educational institutions. (3 units) Management Ethics This course tackles discussion on rightness and wrongness of manager s decisions and actions with the end in view of highly ethical, humane managers. An important component of a company s interactions with its environment is how its managers ideal with ethical issues. Recent scandals have demonstrated that managerial decision-making almost always has ethical implications. More often than not, however, those ethical implications are viewed as implicit by products, rather than explicit determinants, of decisions. Ethics is made explicit taking the perspective of managers who must formulate policies to address issues with ethical dimensions. (3 units) Labor and Social Legislation This course would be basically study of the laws, jurisprudence and policies that affect the nature of managerial work, labor and management relationship and other related issues. Includes Supreme Court decisions pertaining to labor disputes handed down in recent years because they represent gems of wisdom which will help enrich Philippine jurisprudence on labor management relations including the Philippine Constitution, Acts, Presidential Decrees, Executive Orders, Batas Pambansa, Rules and Regulations, Manuals of Instructions both for public and private schools and DECS Orders, Implementing Guidelines, etc. governing managerial practices of the country. The conceptualization of the legal dimensions relative to management and the processes for purposes of evaluation and possible recommendation for improvements. (3 units) School Physical Plant and Facilities Management Education of present building and equipment needs of school units; planning building program; operation and maintenance of physical plant and facilities; efficiency and effectiveness of physical plant and facilities. (3 units) M811 Supervision of Instruction Theory and practice of instructional programs; case analysis to measure program outcomes; skills in the supervision of instruction for insure quality/ high teaching performance effective to learning needs. Concepts and challenges for the field of futurism and global setting inclusive of future techniques and methodology of teaching. (3 units)
5 M812 Curriculum Development Deals with curriculum design, implementation, evaluation and enrichment. Adapt curriculum development models relevant to the 21 st century. Includes basic principles of curriculum design and improvement; shall cover school s vision and mission, needs assessment of learners, and curriculum goals and objectives. (3 units)
6 M813 Management of Quality School Systems Managing quality educational / school systems; theories and principles in management of school system; techniques of continuous quality improvement and the use of quality tools; process-based and outcomes-based management. Systems approach to designing and managing quality performing educational/ school systems; systems modeling; study applications of high/ quality performance models. (3 units) Cognates: C814 C815 C816 School Personnel Management Personnel organization in any school system; interpersonal and intrapersonal relationships; organizational health, staffing, remuneration; fringe benefits; appraisal; security, in-service staff development programs; negotiations; personnel evaluation programs. (3 units) Managerial Decision Making This course relies on the case method of instruction in the evaluation and analysis of management issues, problems, and opportunities; it is anchored on strategic management concepts, principles, theories and methodology for organizational problem solving and decision-making processes. The course is limited to case analysis-its nature, how it works and its utility to decision making, it is not designed for the development of skills for the actual design and construction of case models but the application of academic knowledge in the analysis and evaluation of existing case studies. The course uses the Module approach and combines lecture discussions with emphasis on techniques and accepted qualitative and quantitative models of case analysis. (3units) Trends, Issues and Problems in Educational Management A lecture-discussion course on contemporary philosophy of the Philippine education as reflected in the vision, mission and goals of basic and higher education. Issues on quality and excellence, relevance and responsiveness, access, and equity, efficiency and effectiveness. Trends and programs towards the establishment of effective schools. (3 units) Foreign Language: FL 817 Niponggo Uses audio-lingual approach. The focus is on the principles governing basic Japanese grammar. It also deals with the sociohistoric background of how the Japanese Language developed and how it is utilized in today s society. (3units) FL 818 Spanish Focuses on developing the student s ability to engage in and carry on a conversation about daily activities. Students will therefore be taught the sentence patterns, vocabulary, discourse skills and cultural knowledge necessary to the accomplishment of said communication objectives. Topics shall include the individual,
7 education, transport and communications, shopping, leisure time, and the environment. (3units) Fl 820 Mandarin Focus is on spoken Chinese Mandarin to be able to carry a casual conversation about daily life activities/ Familiarity with basic sentence patterns; introduction of basic Chinese characters in reading and writing.
