Fibre broadband: the legacy for Staffordshire starts today Bill Murphy Managing Director, Next Generation Access BT Group
Ambition from the Government The Government has a great ambition...for Britain to have the best superfast broadband network in Europe by 2015 It has allocated 530m during the lifetime of this parliament - public funding to bring superfast broadband to rural areas The process is administered by Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK) BDUK has allocated the funding to every English county and the devolved nations The counties and nations have run procurement processes to select a telecommunications provider to deliver faster broadband to those areas that are not commercially viable for the private sector to invest alone
BT s UK commercial fibre broadband roll-out 2.5bn investment to bring fibre broadband to around two-thirds of UK premises by the end of Spring 2014 Delivering at least 18 months ahead of original plan A mixture of fibre to the cabinet (FTTC) and fibre to the premises technology (FTTP) Already available to more than 17 million homes and businesses and passing 80k-100k more each week More than 80 CPs currently trialling or selling fibre services using BT s network In excess of 2 million customers using fibre on a wholesale basis 15 year pay-back period No other company in the world is investing as much in fibre without public sector support or a regulatory regime that allows for far greater returns
BT in Staffordshire A 27.35m project between Staffordshire County Council, BT and the Government s BDUK programme: Broadband Delivery UK 7.44m Staffordshire County Council 7.83m BT Group 12.47m Commercial Deployment Current build coverage 53% (266,000) Total Commercial coverage around 74% (372, 000) Expected to be completed by Spring 2014 Partnership Deployment First communities are expected to be ready for service Spring 2014 (Colton and Rugeley) More than 88,000 total premises passed by partnership Fibre completion by June % County Coverage expected (Combined Commercial and Partnership)
Fibre: transforming small businesses Improving web presence Improving customer experience Enabling expansion Enabling rural businesses to compete with city based competitors Increasing competitive edge Improving productivity Faster speeds Send & receive large files in seconds Improved home working capability Reliable service Carry out bandwidth hungry tasks simultaneously Cost savings Hosted & site based VoIP Improved video conferencing reduces need for travel Eliminates need for rural businesses to relocate to city based offices Utilise more cloud computing resources
Partnership working & community engagement is key Balloons & Tunes - a party balloon and entertainment business, run from their canal-side cottage in Fazeley, Tamworth, by husband and wife Pam and Paul Pearce Share large files and photos with potential customer and students Upload photos of their displays of their displays on website more quickly and easily Since switching to fibre broadband, among the many benefits they have enjoyed are being able to: Send s more quickly no more annoying timer!
Transforming premises today, ready for tomorrow HDBebo / HD YouTube: 12 Mbps Xbox HD: 12 Mbps HD Cookery: 12 Mbps Super Hi-Vision TV: 110 Mbps HD Telepresence: 8 Mbps
The Big Build It s a BIG job!

Technology Overview
New fibre network
The Openreach Network 120 million km of copper access enough to go around the world almost 3,000 times 7 million km of fibre enough to go 180 times around the world. 5 million underground joint boxes 4.2 million distribution points 4 million telegraph poles 90,000 green cabinets 5,500 exchange buildings The network is accessible to all Communication Providers, not just BT. Over 80 Communication Providers trialling / offering fibre services
Superfast Staffordshire - work has started Pre-planning Preparing the exchange Planning the network Installation A full assessment of the existing network to provide accurate information for our engineers. Agree and plan when the new equipment will be placed inside the exchange. Every exchange is different. Surveying underground ducts and planning where the new fibre, street cabinets and over ground equipment will go. We are meeting with the Highways and Planning teams. Building the new network from the exchange to the new street cabinets.
Our Deployment Strategy The decision of where and when to deploy Superfast Broadband is based on: - Technical and physical feasibility - Existing Infrastructure Exchange equipment, ducts, copper and power - Clustering of premises Always look to maximise the number of lines served in the earliest timeframe (value for money) - Best alignment of local engineering resources Flexible approach = Greatest coverage, highest speed, lowest cost, shortest timescale = best value for money
Work happening now in collaboration Rugeley Horsefair - Major Roadwork Scheme Joint operation coordinating deployment with major road works Planning together (Openreach, Staffordshire County Council, Highways and Local Planning Authorities) Output deliver minimum disruption 08/11/13 08/11/13 08/11/13
Superfast Staffordshire - a Major Engineering Project 8 fibre deployment phases to end of Spring 2016 Approximately 1 million metres of new fibre laid More than 500 new fibre cabinets Project involving more than 100 engineers Connecting to more than 130 exchanges Will deliver fibre broadband capability to over 88k premises across Staffordshire Enough fibre to join Staffordshire to the Swiss Alps.and back!
