1 Overview: Service Providers are faced with many complex challenges in their last mile access network. One of those challenges is the continued demand for business services. The second challenge is to provide the most cost effective infrastructure. First choice when economically feasible is to place fiber for the building entrance facility in lieu of copper. The third challenge is to continue providing and supporting business and residential services while many of their incumbent equipment providers have Manufacture Discontinued (MD d) their product lines. The difficult job for an OSP Planner and Engineer is to continue to provide these traditional TDM services while the clear network initiatives is to transition to an all IP Ethernet-centric Network. Tellabs also views the IP Network Transition as the preferred growth technology, however, the customer s current needs must be also be met due to state PUC requirements and existing tariffs until this is modified or eliminated. Another challenge is that many of the customary technologies that were used in delivering traditional TDM services are now Manufacture Discontinued. The list of MD d access equipment includes but is not limited to Alcatel-Lucent s SLC96/SLC Series5/SLC2000 and Litespan, Zhone s (Nortel) AccessNode, GenBand s (Nortel) DMS1 Urban, Siemen s AE914 and most recently Adtran s TA1500. Adtran has also MD d the TA1148 and TA1248, which are copper fed DSLAMs. The Tellabs 1000 Multi-Service Access Platform is a good choice for a low cost replacement of these technologies. Tellabs Access is committed to support our customers with the Tellabs 1000 with over 9,000 systems carrying traffic. 2 Tellabs 1000 System Features: The Tellabs 1000 MSAP, also known as the AccessMax, DMAX1120 and UMC1000 is a modern and flexible Integrated Multiservice Access Platform (IMAP). It can economically serve from as few as six to more than two thousand subscribers. Designed with a modular, building-block approach, the Tellabs1000 supports a variety of transmission media to provide service in a wide range of network topologies. The Tellabs 1000 uses state-of-the-art technologies to provide traditional and forward-looking subscriber services. The Tellabs 1000 family of products provides local loop voice, data, xdsl and Ethernet solutions. Each Tellabs 1000 product uniquely solves pressing service delivery needs. The Tellabs 1000 also provides legacy narrowband and wideband services while utilizing existing backhaul facilities, including fiber and T1/E1 or HDSL copper plant. The unique backplane design combines line card powering and heat dissipation technologies, delivering multiple high-density services. Tellabs equips a number of remote telecom cabinets with the Tellabs 1000 channel bank assembly that can provide the following: Page 3 of 20

4 Network Configurations: A Tellabs 1000 Linear Chain configuration can extend five transport spans deep from the LET with up to 32 total remote terminals. In this configuration, the LET resides in the Central Office with the switch. The RST, which resides in a remote cabinet, in a rack, in a CEV, or on a subscriber s premises, delivers an array of services. See Figure 1. Figure 1. Page 8 of 20
A Tellabs 1000 Star configuration can connect directly to up to 32 RSTs, five transport spans deep. In this configuration, the LET resides in the Central Office with the switch. The RST, which resides in a remote cabinet, in a rack, in a CEV, or on a subscriber s premises, delivers an array of services. See Figure 2. Figure 2. Page 9 of 20
The Tellabs 1000 system is ideal for co-location because it delivers all the critical voice services, as well as ISDN, DDS, 2-wire and 4-wire specials, Pay/Coin service, T1, HDSL, ADSL, and VDSL in any combination, all from a single shelf. It then concentrates voice and data traffic, providing for efficient use of transport facilities. See Figure 3. Figure 3. Page 10 of 20
An alternate application for D4 CBA replacement is to deploy a Tellabs 1000 as a standalone LET channel bank, either as a single shelf or up to 8 individual shelves in a single bay. All that is required per shelf are redundant CPU3 and L-PSU common cards with an optional MTU or DBP card for metallic testing. Then you can install up to 4-T1x (non-powered) cards to support up to 96 DSOs per shelf. There are 21 slots available to place any POTS or Special Service cards required. These shelves can be installed in the CO cabled directly to the MDF and DSX-1, an RT cabled directly to Krone Blocks or Protector Blocks and mux or a combination of both. See Figure 3A. Figure 3A. Page 11 of 20
5 Network Topology: The following are examples of network deployments to provide voice and data service in the above mentioned configurations. Although many of these show POTS cards, the same applies for any DSO, DS1, DS3 or Ethernet service. With the exception of deploying Ethernet using GigE uplink cards being required to be placed in slots 12/13 of the CBA, the first 22 slots are considered universal slots for any service type. In any of these topologies, the transport can be fiber or copper fed. The Linear chain example shows the extension of an LET to multiple RSTs in a drop and continue configuration with a single shelf solution using a mixture of fiber and copper. It is always best to use fiber when available. The LET is connected via fiber to RST1 with RST1 to RST2 and RST2 to RST3 via copper feed. Each RST s DS0s are mapped to particular LET T1X cards for delivery to a local Digital Cross-Connect system (DCS) or mux to be distributed to the ultimate end location. The TSI functionality allows any RST DSO to be assigned to any LET T1X. In some Service Provider s networks, the placement of plugs will depend upon OSS restrictions or models. The caution with this configuration is any break on an upstream transport link will sever service to the trailing RSTs. See Figure 4. Figure 4. Page 12 of 20
The Star example shows the extension of an LET directly connected to multiple RSTs with a single shelf solution. The LET is directly connected via fiber to RST1, RST2 and RST3 via fiber. With this configuration, any transport link cut will only affect the RST directly connected to the LET. See Figure 5 Figure 5. Page 13 of 20
The Star example shows the extension of an LET directly connected to multiple RSTs with a multi-shelf solution. The LET is directly connected via fiber to RST1, RST2 and RST3 via fiber. This configuration allows for greater bandwidth on a per LET shelf basis as well as additional slots if more universal/local MDF connections are required. With this configuration, any transport link cut will only affect the RST directly connected to the LET. See Figure 6 Figure 6. Page 14 of 20
6 Tellabs 1000 Special Services Application Summary Tellabs has provided special services on the Tellabs 1000 since its inception. Tellabs continues to re-spin the Tellabs 1000 modules to improve the performance of the card as well as deal with part obsolescence. Many of these cards have been used since the early 1990s so components naturally become obsolete and component vendors leave the business. Tellabs continues to insure that the Tellabs 1000 is a viable product for our customers networks and will find other component vendors to supply the most cost effective parts. However, sometimes Tellabs must also re-spin Network Element software to keep up with these changes. These are not new loads, but dot (.) releases to our ATM load (FP10.0) and Ethernet load (FP16.0).
