1 Pharma-Bio-Med & BioSciences Conference and Exposition 2011 Programme Sunday 13, November Wednesday, 16 November Sunday, November 13, :00-15:25 How Science Translational Medicine Accelerates Your Research Discoveries, Grows Your Pipeline, and Delivers Future Cures AAAS/Science s workshop will focus on how the field of translational medicine and the research published in Science Translational Medicine, the newest journal from AAAS/Science, will accelerate research discoveries, moving them more rapidly through the clinical trial phase, into the pipeline, and to patented therapeutics. One of the missions of translational medicine is to create more cures at a faster pace as cures have not kept up with research. The average time line from target discovery to approval of a new drug averages 13 years, the failure rate exceeds 95%, and the cost per successful drug creation exceeds $1 billion. In order for the pharmaceutical and bio-tech industries to bring new drugs to market in a more timely and investment-wise manner, a new type of research is needed. This is where Science Translational Medicine comes into play. Examples of recent break-through applied research published in the journal that speaks directly to the type of research needed in the pharmaceutical and bio-tech arenas will also be covered. Eileen Bernadette Moran Director, Corporate Relations AAAS/Science Eileen Bernadette Moran is Director, Corporate Relations for AAAS/Science. To be Announced - Elsevier Sunday, November 13, :00-16:40 Sequence Searching on STN Sunday, November 13, :45-17:10 Effective searching of biotechnology, often requires comprehensive gene and protein sequence searches in the literature. While the STN databases GENESEQ (DGENE), USGENE, PCTGEN and REGISTRY are all invaluable in this regard, searching and navigating through the combination of bibliographic and biological information can sometimes be a challenging task. In addition to providing some practical tips for effective retrieval and analysis, this workshop will review the content of the STN databases especially in comparison to what is available "for free" in this area via the internet. The session should be of interest to all experienced, intermediate and aspiring sequence searchers. Robert Austin STN European Training Manager FIZ Karlsruhe Robert Austin is currently STN European Training Manager for FIZ Karlsruhe, the European partner of STN International, and his past experience with FIZ Karlsruhe includes 8 years working throughout the United States as Regional Sales Manager. Opening Remarks 9:00-9:15 Ford Khorsandian Pharma-Bio-Med & BioSciences Organisation 9:15-9:50 Clinging to a hanging rock with a wonderful view! - Challenges and Opportunities in Information Management The perceptions of Information Management are moving from delivery to partnership; information searching to information discovery; data retrieval to mining with semantics; virtual to visualization; desktops to devices; 1:1 communication to sharing and social softwares. We need to continue to actively define our innovative leadership during these evolutionary times. Globalisation, offshoring, outsourcing, are challenging our own perceptions of information management, and the technology developments as well as our internal and external collaborations are challenging licensing and copyright. All of these changes and challenges represent development and opportunities, and we need to proactively grab the possibilities. Henning Nielsen Director, Library Novo Nordisk Henning P. Nielsen is director of Novo Nordisk Library. Novo Nordisk A/S is a global pharmaceutical company based in Copenhagen, Denmark. In 1990 he took up a position as sales manager in Danish Data Electronics, Library Automation Group, with international marketing of library automation system as main area. In 1993 he took over the present position managing the biggest corporate library in Denmark. Developing a global organisation delivering context driven information and information competencies and building the virtual library on a global scale within the company has been the major tasks in this position. Since 2004 he is President of the Pharma Documentation Ring (P-D-R). As member of P-D-R he has been very active in partnering with the information industry. The collaboration with publishers has resulted in the creation of the STM/P-D-R Sample License on e-journal Licensing in 1999 and revising it in 2007, and also the Draft Code of Practice for external use of e-content in pharmaceutical companies in :50-10:30 Information From Mobile Devices - Are We at the Tipping Point? No-one doubts the transformation that mobile devices are having on society. The expansion of use and variety of devices is still increasing at a phenomenal rate. This coupled with a supporting technical infrastructure, simplifying design and creation of 'apps' is fueling the not just adoption but creative use. Smart Phones are becoming the standard, and augment our professional and personal lives as a tool for information use and meeting the demand of instant access to information at any time So has this revolution transformed our business practices in the Pharma Industry? Do Pharma associates prefer now to use iphones compared to computers or do they have a need of both and how as information and knowledge managers are we responding? Do we recreate the current paradigms but on mobile devices, or use this transformation to better identify new solutions to deliver information into business workflows? And how does this impact the role and efforts of the knowledge professional? What competencies are required going forward and what changes need to be adopted in our organizations to benefit and expose the maximal advantage to this shifting environment? Do we still need to experiment, or is this a service that should be main stream? Have we reached the tipping-point that it's no longer 'if' but 'when', and is that 'now'?

This might be for reasons of preference, resource availability, habit. In the case of many end-users it can be due to lack of knowledge about suitable sources. For some research however, this means that relevant information can remain untapped. In this presentation, using some example research scenarios on ProQuest Dialog, we consider effective techniques for searching across multiple databases to increase discovery and comprehensiveness. Roger Tritton Director, Product Management Dialog Roger s responsibilities include the management of Dialog s product range supporting scientific research in the pharmabiomed sector, and the development of new information sources and new technologies in that market. Roger has been heavily involved in the specification and migration of STM databases on the new ProQuest Dialog platform. 11:25-11:55 Search Consultancy Another Approach to Helping your Customers I work in a Search Specialist team of 6 people that besides providing full Pharmacovigilance support for Patient Safety we also act as 2nd line support for all databases provided by AZ Library. Since we have the entire company as customer group we do not always have the time to provide the scientists with full literature searches. Instead we work with a different approach when helping customers. We act as search consultants and guide them to the best sources depending on the topic of their request and then we guide them through the searches, how to find search terms, how to perform advanced searches etc. This way they are prepared to perform their own searches the next time the need for a literature search appears. Anna Hellsten Kronander Search Specialist AstraZeneca Anna Hellsten Kronander is an Information Specialist with a Master in Library and Information Science from the Swedish School of Library and Information Science (SSLIS) at the University of Borås, Sweden. This presentation will outline GSK s approach for marketing The Library from initial customer engagement activities, tools and techniques for promoting The Library, lessons learnt and measuring the impact of The Library s marketing activities. Helen Malone Content Portfolio Manager GlaxoSmithKline Helen Malone has held a wide variety of information management roles within the publishing and pharmaceutical industry and has expertise in leading strategic reviews of the published information portfolio, business case development, project and change management and driving post-implementation reviews and benefits realisation. Helen s current role at GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) encompasses portfolio planning, financial management and marketing of the published information portfolio to R&D and beyond. Helen holds an MSc in Information Science from City University, London; BSc in Physics from the University of Bristol and has recently completed a professional marketing qualification (Diploma in Digital Marketing) accredited by the Chartered Institute of Marketing in the UK. Increasing the Impact of the Information and CI Professional - Ways to Build Successful Partnerships Alliances and partnerships have become an integral part of contemporary strategic thinking and is one if the ways in which information services can expand beyond their existing resources or provide a more effective, focused and targeted service. Partnering with others in the organisation should be considered as a matter of course, be they other information or service providers or the specialist groups for whom we
12 provide the information service. This tutorial will explore the partnering process and identify the many possible partners who could work effectively with the information service. Through active participation, the tutorial will examine some of the partnering relationships in more detail and will also identify the skills and competencies needed to develop effective partnering. Shaida Dorabjee Consultant SD Information Services Shaida Dorabjee, BSc, MCLIP, has been involved in information work in the pharmaceutical industry for over 25 years, and spent many years as an information manager, responsible for a variety of library and information functions covering research and development, business and marketing information. She also spent seven years with CMR International undertaking strategic research and benchmarking of management issues in the pharmaceutical industry as a whole and undertook research on organisational cultures of different companies. Infovation - Information and CI Professionals as Key Players in Industrial Innovation As the different parts of the heathcare industry continue to change, its innovation infrastructure must evolve to meet new challenges. How can information professionals ensure that they provide a valued service in a highly outsourced and inter-dependent innovation ecosystem? Might the continuing change in information technologies provide new opportunities to lead innovation, or will the democratisation of information maginalize the role of the information professional? Chris Shilling Innovation Agent Newhow Knowhow (Formerly with Novartis and Pfizer) Chris Shilling has 14 years experience as an innovation project manager and leader in the pharmaceutical industry. Working as an independent consultant, Chris helps small and large organisations understand the innovation challenges they face and helps them to plan and implement innovation projects. The exhibits give attendees the opportunity to hear about the latest products and services, technologies and methodologies in programs and meetings and then get hands-on opportunities to see these innovations in action. 9:00-9:30 The Transition of a Database into a Swiss Army Knife - A Multi-Purpose In-House Tool for Supporting Corporate Products These days end-users face countless possibilities of biomedical literature searching. PubMed, Google Scholar, commercially available onesearch-all-platforms it is a big market out there. Anyhow end-users very often struggle with restricting their searches to contain the most remarkable key publications. Which are the most relevant articles? How can results be filtered and important publications be determined? The Nycomed Knowledge & Information Centre (KIC) took up the challenge to guide their colleagues in the company through the jungle of Nycomed's internal collection of corporate product related publications. In the past the medical documentation database (MedDoc) was established to combine several in-house literature databases of two merged companies.
13 These databases were aggregated to only one medical documentation system. Over time new functionalities were developed and new services added. Implementing a specific classification system and using a product specific subset of internal keywords made the most specific and product relevant key publications searchable and accessible. Like a Swiss Army Knife, the MedDoc is now being used as system for a number of different product related literature information topics: Literature management and sharing, literature archiving, alerting service, literature full-text access and literature communication. Dirk Schmitt-Wagner Information Specialist Nycomed Dirk works as an Information Specialist in the Knowledge & Information Centre at Nycomed. He is part of the main and competent interface for information flow and coordinated dissemination of information, combining internal knowledge and external data to high-value information. As an editor of five different newsletters, he is responsible for a continuous monitoring and retrieval of company-specific news and information. Dirk established and administrates a central documentation database, supporting all corporate products. He is able to perform comprehensive searches (patent, literature, competitor surveillance etc.) and with regular trainings and numerous presentations, he is highly active in the direct marketing of the information group at NYCOMED. 9:30-10:00 PharmaConnect: Development of an Integrated Internal/External Knowledge Platform To Support Systematic, Evidence-based Decision Making The Knowledge Engineering initiative within AstraZeneca has delivered, a year ago, the first version of a platform that integrates internal and external evidence for connections between key concepts such as targets, pathways, compounds, diseases and clinical outcome. This talk will describe the impact of this new platform and lessons learned from the AZ experience of working through issues such as taxonomy integration, data modeling and user interface development. There will also be an opportunity to hear how the platform is being used and plans for its future development. Sorana Popa Information Analyst AstraZeneca Sorana Popa grew-up in Bucharest, Romania and moved to Sweden at the age of 15. Sorana moved back to Romania and graduated the Medical and Pharmaceutical University, in Bucharest, in She worked as a physician in Gothenburg, Sweden, until 1997 when she joined former Astra, currently AstraZeneca. Get the Most out of your Licensed Tools - The Training Concept in Roche Diagnostics Penzberg In a demanding environment as in the pharmaceutical and diagnostics industry the information literacy of each researcher is very important. Therefore the department for scientific and business information services in Penzberg offers a wide variety of training opportunities to get the staff to the optimum which tool to use to answer their questions. We also try to improve the ability of the scientific staff to decide whether to do a search by their own or to contact an information professional. This poster will show a collection of measures of how we try to reach the people and how this could impact the quality of their work. Karen Jendro Scientific Information Services Roche Diagnostics Working for Roche since 1986, Karen Jendro started as a laboratory technician in the department of research and development for diagnostic reagents. After 10 years Karen changed into the world of information professionals, taking with her the insight into the researcher s way to work and think. During the last 15 years Karen provided her scientific staff, the patent department and marketing with appropriate patent, literature and business information and analyses. Additional responsibilities lie in the administration of several internal databases (e.g. for managing the workflow of incoming search requests, dissemination of alerts etc.) New Career Dimensions - Adding New Capabilities and Gaining New Work Experiences Gaining additional capabilities through either formal qualifications or experiencing new roles is one way of broadening your skills and developing your career. This poster will highlight how a professional qualification in marketing has helped to enhance an information role. It will also share how new work experiences such as facilitating senior leadership meetings and leading a communications team at GSK has helped to broaden knowledge and expertise. Helen is a member of IMPI (UK Information Managers in the Pharmaceutical Industry), Pharma Documentation Ring (PDR) and is on the Pharma-Bio-Med Board of Counselers. The Evolution and Improvement of the Cosmetic and Fragrances Products Management System At the beginning, the information was stored in Access database format used by a single department. This editing could only be done by a unique user. Furthermore every update would cause a lot of troubles. Nowadays, we have been able to develop a common web-access platform that allows to centralize all the internal and external product information: physicochemical analytical data, news, patents, images, etc. Thanks to this, all the R&D department results and documentation are integrated. Moreover, this tool has additional features such the creation of reports, basic and advanced searches, etc. Thus, it provides with an important added value to the R&D management teams. The key responsibility of a MI service is to respond to questions from healthcare professionals and patients about the company s medicines. MI services are increasingly managed at a global level to ensure consistency and quality. Close collaboration between MI and Literature Resources is an important aspect of the global coordination of the MI service. This collaboration has helped to facilitate access to key electronic resources, training and risk management. However, with the exponential growth in papers that appear in Pubmed and other literature databases, efficient text mining techniques need to be developed and applied to retrieve and filter out relevant information. Indeed multiple text mining tools, based on natural language processing or co-occurrence algorithms, have been developed to deal with this problem. Innovative application of these tools can aid biomedical information specialists in decision making, portfolio evaluation and identification of important new trends in research and development. In this presentation several case examples will be demonstrated in which publicly available text mining tools are used to address a variety of questions. These include retrieval of pharmaceutical targets from biomedical literature, biomarker discovery and drug toxicity evaluation. Furthermore, it will be demonstrated how text-mining based knowledge discovery can be used for drug repositioning.
