The event facilitated NALFO familia/unity and proceeds were donated to La Clinica del Pueblo, a local latino-serving nonprofit clinic. Impact: Over $300 raised Southeast Region Columbia, SC Newark, NJ Project Coordinator: Allison Seijo, Chi Upsilon Sigma Co-Sponsors: Lambda Pi Chi, Lambda Theta Alpha 18 Volunteers/90 Total Hours Category: Disaster Relief Nonprofit: Jersey Cares and Jersey City Sandy Recovery Project Activity: Interpreting and translating for families in need of supplies, sorted donations being delivered to the Sandy Relief Donation Center, scouted Newark neighborhood for residents in need of supplies and donations. Impact: 10 families given translation services, 50 homes assessed for supply needs, donations for 100 individuals were sorted. Project Coordinator: Yesi Castro, Sigma Iota Alpha Co-sponsor(s): Phi Iota Alpha 10 Volunteers/40 Total Hours Category: Educational/Awareness Nonprofit: Columbia Museum of Art Activity: Served as volunteers at the Columbia Museum of Art Artisans Fair. Volunteers were assigned to various stations including registration, check-out and gift wrap. NALFO members were credited with making the day a success!

NALFO walkers were encouraged to bring posters and signs that raised awareness of Latino specific health issues. Impact: $175 dollars donated to American Heart Association Statesboro, GA Miami, FL *City Year Miami Corps members volunteered alongside our NALFO volunteers! Project Coordinators: Richard Benitez, Lambda Upsilon Lambda and Giovanni Henriquez, Lambda Sigma Upsilon Co-sponsor(s): Sigma Iota Alpha, Chi Upsilon Sigma, Kappa Delta Chi, Lambda Alpha Upsilon 19 Volunteers/57 Total Hours Nonprofit: Easter Seals South Florida Category: Senior Citizens Activity: Volunteers provided support to a classroom of senior citizens with dementia and other physical impairments. Volunteers led the elderly in games, interviewed them and asked them questions about their past, fed them, danced with them, and shared jokes. The interaction was priceless. A smaller group also assisted with preparing supplies for an upcoming Easter Seals event. Project Coordinator: Paul Verrilli, Phi Iota Alpha Co-sponsor(s): Sigma Iota Alpha 11 Volunteers/44 Total Hours Category: Hunger/Homelessness Nonprofit: Voces Unidas & Southeast Georgia Communities Project Activity: Volunteers collected donations of nonperishable goods at a local farmers market while handing out brochures and information on poverty and hunger faced by Latinos in the region. All donations were taken to SEGCP that caters to the needs of impoverished Latinos in South Georgia. Impact: 53 cans of food donated

Impact: 20 Children assisted directly, and many more indirectly through classroom support. Northeast Region New York, NY Project Coordinators: Keith Garcia, Lambda Upsilon Lambda and Jorlui Sillau, Phi Iota Alpha Co-sponsor(s): Omega Phi Beta, Sigma Iota Alpha, Lambda Pi Upsilon, Chi Upsilon Sigma, Lambda Pi Chi, Lambda Theta Alpha, Alpha Psi Lambda, Lambda Sigma Upsilon 33 Volunteers/99 Total Hours Category: Disaster Relief Nonprofit: N/A Activity: NALFO members brought donations to the New York University campus where they sorted clothing and supplies. Groups of volunteers then dispersed and assisted in cleaning areas of New York City affected by super storm Sandy. One group of volunteers helped to sort additional supplies and load trucks, while others removed debris and picked up trash. Others also traveled to the home of a NALFO member particularly affected by the storm to provide immediate support and make preliminary repairs. 5 Plattsburgh, NY Project Coordinators: Johnny McCarthy, Phi Iota Alpha and Katerine Gabriel, Sigma Lambda Upsilon 17 Volunteers/42 Total Hours Category: Senior Citizens Nonprofit: Meadowbrook Nursing & Rehabilitation Center Activity: NALFO members brought Latin music and dance to the seniors living at Meadowbrook. NALFO members taught the basic steps and encouraged the seniors to participate. Impact: 20 seniors learned about the Latino culture. Syracuse, NY *City Year Corps members volunteered alongside us! Project Coordinators: Harly Jose Rodriguez, Phi Iota Alpha and Denise Figueroa, Omega Phi Beta Co-sponsors(s): Lambda Pi Chi 12 Volunteers/36 Total Hours Category: Mentoring/Tutoring Activity: Volunteers wrote inspirational and encouraging letters to youth. The letters included motivational quotes and personal advice on how to overcome challenges, specifically as they relate to education. The letters were delivered to a local nonprofit that predominantly serves Latino and minority youth. Impact: 50 youth received encouraging letters from NALFO members. I think it's great that NALFO is finally teaming up on a national level to promote service in our communities. Our council strives to promote unity and service throughout campus' around the nation with various events every year but I believe the UP Initiative will be one of most compelling efforts yet since it is so large scale! Category: Beautification/Clean-Up Activity: Beautifying a densely Latino population portion of Southeast Houston, Bayou Oaks. Volunteers cut branches and overgrown landscape, picked up trash, and loaded trucks of debris. Other volunteers assisted with planting and beautifying the sign at the entrance of the neighborhood. Impact: 12 Bags of trash and debris removed, 20 plants planted. Dallas/Ft. Worth, TX Project Coordinator: Cristal Retana, Sigma Lambda Alpha Co-sponsor(s): Phi Iota Alpha, Lambda Theta Phi, Lambda Theta Alpha 27 Volunteers/116 Total Hours Category: Educational/Awareness, Children Nonprofit: Neighborhood Service Council, Inc. Activity: Dallas NALFO members hosted the first annual Kilometers4Kids 5k run. The run was preceded by a fundraising event at Chili s. Both events raised awareness and funds for a Latino-serving nonprofit in Dallas, TX. Impact: $1, raised and donated to Neighborhood Service Council, Inc. 50 children from low-income Latino families will be provided with a safe space to visit after school. As alumni of Sigma Lambda Alpha Sorority, Inc., a new addition the NALFO family, I wanted to participate in the UP initiative as Project Coordinator not only to get to know the other organizations under NALFO, but to join together its members for a great cause that will benefit the Latino community and more specifically the children of our community. The interaction was fun yet also impactful. Impact: 300 children mentored Midwest Region Chicago, IL Project Coordinator(s): Reina Salcedo, Gamma Phi Omega and Lauryn Drew Garza, Alpha Psi Lambda Co-sponsor(s): Sigma Iota Alpha, Phi Iota Alpha 19 Volunteers/76 Total Hours Category: Beautification/Clean-Up Nonprofit: ASPIRE Activity: The ASPIRE facilities were renovated inside and outside. 15 rooms were cleaned, a larger activity area was painted and the outdoor area surrounding the building was cleared of debris and garbage. Impact: The renovated facilities will provide services to 200 students. Over $400 was raised by NALFO members in support of this project and then donated back to ASPIRE via project materials. Service to me is the purpose of life being a part of organizations that promote not only service but service as a unified community is what truly makes organizations like NALFO stand out and show that as Latinos we are moving UP.
