A C A D E M I C S Legacy Continuing a of Leadership Throughout our fifty-year history there have been 10 Marist Brothers leading the educational programs at Molloy as either Director or Principal. This legacy of leadership combined with a dedicated faculty and staff that numbers approximately 100 today continues our commitment to excellence based on the 115 year tradition of St. Ann s Academy. Molloy s first faculty in 1957 numbered 56, consisting of 53 Marist Brothers, and two lay faculty members, supported by one female staff member. Since 1957 more than 350 professionals have contributed to the fulfillment of our mission: There have been many changes in curriculum, technology and the cultural mix of students throughout the years. Creating curriculum offerings designed for a diverse population of college bound students is an ongoing willing to innovate. Having a challenge for the faculty. This is faculty that includes 10 teachers, all part of Brother Roy s personal each with more than 40 years of commitment to Stay Excellent. experience teaching college bound We are good now and need students helps us accomplish our to become better. Our biggest educational mission. They mentor challenge is complacency. our younger faculty, while the younger staff bring the latest in According to Brother Roy, As the theory and practice to the mix. educational leader you must trust There are also 20 Stanners on staff your faculty to develop courses today which helps carry on the designed to meet the challenges cultural traditions of the school. of this time. This requires constant evaluation of the current Keeping up with the latest in curriculum offerings and a faculty educational technology is another Mission Statement: Archbishop Molloy High School is a Catholic Marist school which fosters an exemplary education in mind, body and spirit for a diverse collegebound population. Molloy offers a unique, challenging and comprehensive program of instruction, guidance and athletics. Thus individuals recognize their own self-worth and develop a lifetime of Christian values, critical thinking, leadership skills and service to others.

Brother Roy George became the 10th principal of Molloy in challenge facing every school today. The faculty has access to laptops, there are SMARTboards in many classrooms, and our computer labs provide students with technology training that will support them now and in the future. But technology in and of itself is not an answer. Brother Roy s thoughts on technology provide an insight into how we utilize it here at Molloy. Having access to information is not the same as knowing how to use that information. The core curriculum at Molloy is enhanced through the use of technology, not necessarily dependent on it. As educators we must maintain our commitment to develop the critical thinking skills required to assure the best use of the technology at hand. Tom Freidman in his book The World is Flat writes how technology has leveled the playing field for business. Globalization presents challenges for any college prep school in terms of the way we interact with cultures from around the world. Molloy has become more diverse since In addition to the switch to a co-educational population in 2001, Molloy has continuously diversified as a natural reflection of the community we serve. The final academic challenge in our mission statement is the development of programming designed to build community, support each student s spiritual development and offer opportunities for service to others. Finally, a Marist school must also have a great family spirit. It must offer the type of an environment where students can become the best they can be. We have consistently provided that safe place for personal development over the past 50 years. Brother Roy s vision of the future is clear. As I look to the future of Archbishop Molloy, I see a school that assures access and success for all its students, a school that is affordable and a school that has a quality academic program that prepares its students for the challenges and changes of the 21st century. Our future alumni will have an awareness of the quality of life for themselves and more importantly for others. 3

H E R I T A G E Footsteps In the of Champagnat 4 The life and times of St. Marcellin Champagnat make for an interesting read. His personal efforts to learn presented him with challenges throughout his seminary years. This makes his mission to open schools an even more impressive accomplishment. We have all heard about his founding of the Little Brothers of Mary and his desire to establish a network of schools to educate the illiterate and poor of his section of France. Brother Sean D. Sammons, FMS in his two books about the founder goes into great depth about Marcellin s mission and how it came about. There are stories about political challenges, mergers between groups of St. Marcellin Champagnat s Statue at Molloy 2007 Lourdes Service Team The Spirit of Champagnat lives on in the Lantern Society

religious, and the growth of his order. Sammons covers the move to America, and the eventual founding of schools here. He captures the spirit of Champagnat at Molloy with his description of Marcellin s approach to education: The founder had a buoyant, enthusiastic approach to education. Simple presence to the young, collaboration with parents, a spirit of family, a central place for Mary, love of work, a special concern for the most neglected. His special place for Mary comes alive in the story now captured as The Memorare in the Snow. It takes place in the winter of 1823 when Marcellin learns of the illness of one of the brothers twenty kilometers away. He and Brother Stanislaus visited Brother Jean Baptiste and were returning when they lost their way in a snow storm. As night fell, the cold got worse and Brother Stanislaus had little energy left. Fearing the worst, they turned to Mary in prayer, saying the Memorare. A short while later they saw a light in the distance. A local farmer was going to check his stable. Instead of using the door from the house directly into the stable he chose to go outside and around to the barn door. He brought his lantern with him and when the door to the house opened, Marcellin and Stanislaus saw the light and were delivered from a night in the wilderness. They both considered the lantern lighting the way that night as an act of Providence. Today, the Lantern Society at Molloy engages Stanners in helping others to see the light in the darkness. Their work in the school and community provide opportunities for service to others. Throughout the school year students gather to pray, meditate and reflect on their spiritual life in our community and in the world in which they live. A prayer request log is available for all in our community to request their spiritual support. When we understand this simple story we can help others to turn hopelessness into hope. Our work in the world may not seem great. Neither was that farmer s call to walk a different, less direct way. And because he chose to go a different way, he delivered St. Champagnat to us. Footnote: quote concerning Marcellin s approach to education page 92; A HEART THAT KNEW NO BOUNDS The Life and Mission of Saint Marcellin Champagnat, Alba House Publishing, New York, NY 2000 The Memorare The Memorare, from the Latin remember, was traditionally thought to have been composed by the Cisterian St. Bernard of Clairvaux. It was popularized in the 15th century by a French priest, Claude Bernard. Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to your protection, implored your help or sought your intercession, was left unaided. Inspired with this confidence, I fly unto you, O Virgin of virgins, my Mother. To you I come, before you I stand, sinful and sorrowful; O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in your mercy hear and answer me. Amen. 5

S P I R I T U A L A Journey of 6 Our Association s Spiritual Director, Brother Pat Hogan has been on a Journey these past 50 Years - a journey of faith and service. This year he celebrates his Golden Jubilee as a Marist Brother. In addition to his faculty duties at Molloy, Brother Pat has been involved with the Molloy Sports program, the Marist Summer Camp program at Esopus, and his Pilgrimage travels to Lourdes and the birthplace of the Marist order. Please join me in wishing him well as he continues his work with us and throughout the Marist community. Each day school begins with announcements and a prayer. We pray for all Stanners a gentle reminder that we are not alone. It is a simple way to start each day, and yet, it serves as a reminder that we are a Catholic, Marist school with a clear faith mission. A mission that each of the 20,000 members of our Association carries with them in their heart. The commitments to Mary, St. Ann, and St. Champagnat are very much alive in the school today. As Alumni, we are asked to support the mission of Molloy and to be living examples of the spiritual formation received here as we move through the world in which we live. This is demonstrated in many ways. There are many graduates working in local parishes as lay leaders, teachers, Deacons, Brothers and Priests. Our presence is felt throughout the church every day. This past year, another Stanner was ordained to the priesthood. Fr. Peter Perpura, class of 1999 will continue his priestly work in Rome at the Pontifical North American College in Vatican City. Spiritual formation has been a central part of life at Molloy. Mass, prayer, and religion class provide a strong foundation for life as a Catholic. In the sixties we saw the development of the SMILE program created by Brother Leo, and since that time, the many classes and peer counseling programs developed by Dr. Pat Murphy and the entire faculty have served us well. One of the outstanding efforts since the seventies has been the development of the retreat program and the relationship with Esopus. Throughout a student s Molloy experience they will visit Esopus a number of times. The Freshman Camp is their first community building experience. According to one freshman, Esopus is a place where the spirit of Molloy comes alive. Through their four years here the focus of the retreat and encounter shifts from community building to spiritual formation. In their senior year, the senior encounter experience sets a new platform for spiritual growth. This programs has grown into a dynamic part of each students life at Molloy.

Faith Freshman Camp at Esopus Students of Faith There are many ways for students at Molloy to express their faith. Apart from the various Liturgies held throughout the school year, there are the mission activities performed off site as well. They tutor and perform other support work at the Briarwood Shelter, and collect toys for the annual Toy Drive for the less fortunate. In addition, the students at Molloy also work with the elderly at the Silvercrest Extended Care facility. Our Right to Life Club is supported by a large contingent of Stanners, many of whom just returned from the March in Washington, D.C. The Toy Drive enabled various area charities to give more than 1,400 toys to children in the area. 7 This year 48 students participated in the annual Right to Life March in an expression of their commitment to create a society where all life is valued Thanksgiving Liturgy Mr. Mike Germano is the Director of Campus Ministries at Molloy. He works with students to become Eucharistic Ministers and supervises all campus ministry activities.

The 14th Annual Stanner Games (January 2008) The New Balance Track & Field Center at the Armory serves as the Home of the Stanner Games. This year the games hosted more than 3,200 athletes from 125 regional schools. According to Joe Dombrowski, It has been our goal since the start of these games to provide the best High School Track and Field event in the nation. His sentiment was echoed by Br. Bob Andrews who said, The armory has one of the fastest tracks in the nation and provides a great opportunity for Stanners and all of the competing schools to test their skills. The Center also houses the National Track and Field Hall of Fame, making it a true destination for everyone involved in the sport. 11 Every year many Stanner Alumni return to support The Games as officials. The Farley Brothers have not missed in years. Kevin s moustache makes him an u nforgettable member of the staff. As you can see from the pictures, it is a mini-reunion onto itself. 14 A C A D E M I C S The 50th Anniversary Hall of Fame 12 In Mr. Sherry s opening remarks this year he declared The Year of the Marist Educator at Molloy. When the school opened in 1957 there were 52 Marist Brothers living and teaching at the school. Working along side these brothers was Mr. Lou Carnesecca and a few lay staff members. The standard of excellence they set that first year continues to improve with every addition to the faculty. As new faculty members come along, they bring new class offerings and new ideas. It wasn t long before Stanner graduates felt the pull back to Molloy. Today there are more than thirty Stanners serving as faculty, staff and coaches. Our curriculum continues to represent a strong commitment to Catholic education and the Marist charism. As part of this year s 50th Anniversary celebration we will induct five faculty members into the Stanner Hall of Fame. The slate of nominees went to the Hall of Fame committee in September and the response was unanimous. These faculty members have provided leadership and consistency through the many changes Molloy has faced since In addition to the induction ceremony we will unveil and dedicate the new Hall of Fame display wall. The display will be located in the hallway between the Alumni office and the Marsloe Gymnasium on the first floor. It will be a true celebration of the lives of every one of our Hall of Fame members. The plan includes a computer screen with information about each of the members of the Hall of Fame. It will ultimately include updated information on their lives since their induction. Mary Pat Gannon This years list includes our first female Hall of Fame member, Ms. Mary Pat Gannon. A Stanner at heart, Ms. Mary Pat Gannon has spent 90% of her life involved with Catholic education. She was educated by the Convent Station Charities, School Sisters of the Sacred Heart and New York Charities. Her professional preparation and dedication to the Marist mission and charism combine to make Mary Pat a powerful resource for our students and alumni. Brother Roy George A Stanner from the class of 62, Brother Roy George has served Marist Catholic Schools in Miami, New Jersey, and Long Island. In his time at Molloy he has been an

Assistant Principal for Students and currently serves as Principal. His time is divided between his leadership role as principal and teaching Chemistry. Brother Roy s vision for Molloy is clear. As I look to the future of Archbishop Molloy I see a school that assures access and success for all its students, a school that is affordable and a school that has a quality academic program that prepares its students for the challenges and changes of the 21st century. Our future alumni will have an awareness of the quality of life for themselves and more importantly for others. Brother James Maher Brother James began his teaching career at Molloy in 1958 teaching Math and Religion. One of his fondest memories is the privilege of being able to work as Sodality Moderator with the classes of 62 and 65. He moved on to St. Helena s in the Bronx for the next nine years; teaching, coaching and counseling. In 1971 he became Assistant Principal at Molloy. He successfully integrated the roles of the disciplinarian and counselor during his tenure in this role. By 1986, he had come full circle and landed back where his heart led him at the start. His work is now with freshmen math students as it was in He is grateful to God and his religious community for permitting him to spend forty-one of his fifty years in Marist Education at Archbishop Molloy High School. John Diorio John was born and raised on the lower East Side of Manhattan. He attended Epiphany Grammar School, La Salle Academy High School, St. John s University, and received his Masters degree in 1963 from Fordham University. He began his teaching career at Molloy in He served as coach to the Freshman Basketball team from One of his many contributions to the academic life at Molloy was the introduction of the American Government course for seniors. He also moderated the Political Science Club from 1968 through John has brought countless alumni speakers into his classroom which represents his commitment to our motto Not for School - But for Life. John Gibbons (posthumously) In a recent interview with Mr. Gibbons son, John, we discussed his career at Molloy. It was interesting to hear about John s years as an educator through the eyes and ears of his son. Mr. Gibbons received his professional training at Pace University and Stony Brook University. He was part of the Molloy faculty from 1966 through Though English was a big part of his training, Geology was his passion. He felt a desire to bring people into his world by showing them the greater world. His summer trips out west for more than ten years opened young minds to travel, the vastness of America and the process of exploration. As an educator this enabled him to fulfill his personal mission to open the minds of young people to new ideas and creative ways of thinking. As a Catholic educator his belief was, If you are brought up the right way, do things the proper way when asked, and treat people with the respect that they deserve, you will get the most from them and they will get the most from life. He fully appreciated the discipline that Molloy offered, and Marist philosophy of education. This year s Hall of Fame dinner will be held on Saturday, April 5th at the school. It will be an evening of celebration and thanks to the inductees for their ceaseless dedication to the entire educational program at Molloy. Let us welcome them into the Stanner Hall of Fame and celebrate this Year of the Marist Educator. Make your reservations early. Online registration has opened. If you are willing to share a particular memory about any of our inductees, please send them to cflood@ molloyhs.org or call

We made friendships, learned lessons, developed skills and became the individuals we are today under the watchful eyes of the Marist Brothers, the many Sisters, and Lay Faculty that have served Molloy since the doors opened in This lifetime commitment to be there for one another, to support the work of the school, and to share in the daily prayers of students and Stanners around the world comes at a price the willingness to answer the call when asked for your support. There are many ways to keep your commitments. These are outlined in the final section of the magazine. Spiritual The Marist M, symbol of our Blessed Mother, gives testimony to the Marial heritage of the Marist Brothers, who began this school, and to St. Marcellin Champagnat, their founder. Molloy s spirituality boasts of a selfless love and service to others, rooted in Gospel values and Marist ideals. These are reinforced in each new generation of Stanners. Academic Founded in 1892 as St. Ann s Academy, Molloy s academic mission has always been college prep. The academic life is represented by the beehive, long a symbol of St. Ann s academy, always active and building for the future. For fifty years Molloy has been buzzing with activities that continue to challenge the minds of our students. Our goal is clear: that every Stanner work to their academic potential. Athletics A symbol for victorious competition, the lion stands for Molloy s proud prowess and fine standing in academics and athletics among the schools of the Diocese of Brooklyn, the city and State of New York. Loyal to the vision of St. Marcellin Champagnat, Molloy encourages its students to creatively apply their intellect and abilities.

32 A Campaign for Archbishop Molloy High School

Way Back When... John Gallagher 66 Co-chair Stanners for Life Alumni Committee Way back when John Sherry, President of AMHS, asked me to join his Executive Committee to promote the school s current endowment and investment campaign, I didn t hesitate for one moment. However, shortly thereafter, I asked myself why I had accepted so readily and what had I gotten myself into as well! This personal rendition is therefore both a selfexplanation of that decision and a recollection of four, very fond years at Molloy. As eighth graders WAY BACK WHEN, most of us had our first serious decision to make (with the help of our parents, of course!) about choosing a high school. This relatively new school (established only in 58 and despite its fine New York City pedigree) presented interesting challenges-broadly speaking: academically, socially and, even, geographically-for a kid (or, for that matter, many kids) from Long Island! 33

34 Academics: the Marist teaching tradition; Qualifications: Regents exams, college boards; Catholic tradition: Mass and daily rosary; Holistic Approach: sporting and social activities; and, even, Transportation: daily train, bus and/or subway rides only added to that experience. But, on reflection, it was exactly those challenges and influences which led to the experiences so fondly remembered and which hold my interest and attention to this very day. The friends made, the knowledge gathered and the interpersonal skills acquired hold value for me even today! Allow me one interesting anecdote to exemplify those feelings from another s point of view. Mike Howe 66, a close friend, engineer and business school graduate always mentions being well trained at University, but being educated at Molloy. Hard to find a finer compliment than that! Simply put, NON SCHOLAE, SED VITAE is what attracted me to Molloy, then sustained me (and two of my brothers, as well!) through four years there and which today DRAWS ME BACK to the school TO GIVE BACK to the school and, of course, to today s students some of the same opportunities and advantages (and hopefully then some!) that were afforded us WAY BACK WHEN! John Gallagher 66 Stanners for Life Campaign At a Glance As Archbishop Molloy High School celebrates its 50th year on Manton Street in Briarwood, Queens, it also stands at a crossroads between a storied past and an exciting future. Looking back to its roots as St. Ann s Academy, there are 115 outstanding years of academic, religious, and life experiences upon which to draw. This tradition has firmly established Molloy as one of the premier private Catholic high schools in the New York metropolitan region. Looking forward, continuation of this exemplary education of mind, body, and spirit must be made accessible to future generations of Stanners, assuring that the Marist Endowment and Capital Funding Requirements Stanners for Life Campaign ENDOWMENT 1 Scholarships and Tuition Assistance Fund 2 Campus Ministry Fund Faculty Professional Development Fund 3 $5,000,000 $500,000 $500,000 CAPITAL PROJECTS 4 Performing Arts Upgrade Instructional 5 Technology 6 Athletics Programs $500,000 $250,000 $1,250,000 TOTAL: $6,000,000 $2,000,000 Total Endowment and Capital Funding Requirements for Molloy to carry forth its mission and meet the challenges of the future: $8,000,000

charism will flourish far into the future for both students and alumni. The $8,000,000 Stanners for Life Campaign is designed to help Molloy bridge this crossroads and move into the future. Today, Archbishop Molloy High School Has been recognized by U.S. News & World Report, New York Newsday, the NY Daily News, the Federal Department of Education, and the State Senate. Recently extended its tradition of placing 100% of each of its graduating classes, with the 395 graduates of the Class of 2007 attending 84 different colleges and universities; Provides academic, spiritual, and social guidance through an excellent faculty of Marist Brothers, Sisters and lay teachers, averaging 18 years experience - 95% of whom have earned Masters or Doctoral degrees; Has an unrivaled tradition of excellence in athletics, with City or Diocesan championships in Bowling, Golf, Softball, and Volleyball added to the long list of Stanner champions just in the past year; Presents a play in the fall, a musical in the spring, and several other performance opportunities each year as a part of its expanding Fine Arts program; Offers its students the opportunity to participate in spiritual and service activities, such as the Esopus Retreat program and the Briarwood Shelter; And Regularly receives over 2,500 applications for placement in each freshman class, which numbers just over 400. However, underwriting an unparalleled tradition of academic excellence is becoming more of a challenge with each passing year; in particular, Providing an affordable education to an increasingly diverse population in Queens; Fostering a spiritual grounding for students, in the tradition of St. Marcellin Champagnat, with an increasing need to rely on lay faculty as the number of Marist Brothers dwindles; Maintaining and upgrading the physical plant of a building, now fifty years old; And Providing faculty and students with cutting edge educational technologies in an ever-changing landscape of electronic needs and access. Therefore, in order to provide continuation and access to an academic, religious, and life experience that has defined our students since 1892, we ask you to consider supporting the $8,000,000 Stanners for Life Campaign: Scholarship and Tuition Assistance Fund: Because providing 1 financial aid to economically disadvantaged students is at the core of the Standards for a Marist Education, it is incumbent upon Molloy to do all it can to make it possible for any qualified student who wants to attend the school to be able to do so. By raising $5,000,000 in endowment funds, Molloy will be able to offer approximately 50 additional full scholarships per year. 2 Campus Ministry Fund: Molloy s Campus Ministry Program provides its students with opportunities for spiritual development beyond the Religious Studies curriculum, through worship, sacramental life, vocation awareness, prayer, service opportunities, and retreats. Indeed, through Molloy s Campus Ministry activities, the young men and women of Molloy experience the special Marist charism a deeplyingrained quality and outlook rooted in St. Marcellin Champagnat s vision. Increased costs of travel and lodging for retreats, and for other offsite components of the Campus Ministry Program, make it imperative to develop an endowment to support Campus Ministry activities. Therefore, a basic endowment fund of $500,000 will be necessary to support the Campus Ministry Retreat Program and related services. 3 Faculty Development Fund: The personal influence of Molloy s teaching staff, both Marist Brothers and lay faculty, cannot be underestimated. As such, Molloy s faculty must have the opportunities and resources to maintain their expertise in their respective disciplines, to master the technological tools available to front-line educators to stay current with the latest developments in education. To 35

institute a comprehensive faculty development program at Molloy, the school seeks to create an endowment fund of $500,000. Upgrades to Athletic Facilities to Benefit both Athletic and Performing Arts Programs: 4 Performing Arts: The Theater in the Ralph DiChiaro Center has served as the principal venue for many of these programs. However, because of its limited size, it is best suited for small-scale concerts and productions. It has become necessary to upgrade the school s Jack Curran Gymnasium with new lighting, curtains, air conditioning and supplies, to allow for full actualization of the Performing Arts programs. To do so, it is expected that $500,000 in capital investment will be required. 5 Athletics: The Anthony Marsloe Gymnasium has been a tremendous boon to Molloy athletics, adding another critical home venue to Molloy Basketball and other teams. Molloy s administrators recognize that an investment in air conditioning the Marsloe Gymnasium will make that facility an even more valuable asset to Stanner athletics, in all seasons. In addition, the time has come to resurface the entire field with an ease-ofmaintenance all-weather artificial turf material that will serve the Baseball program, Track program, and other interscholastic sports. To install air conditioning in the Marsloe Gymnasium ($250,000) and resurface the baseball diamond and athletic field ($1,000,000), a capital investment of $1,250,000 will be required. Upgrades in Instructional 6 Technology: Archbishop Molloy is currently utilizing SmartBoard technology in 30 classrooms. SmartBoard technology brings the power of the personal computer to the teaching process, enabling instructors to convert the former chalkboards and marking boards to interactive PC-based educational displays. To expand this program to all classrooms, and to fund additional technology, research, and library programs, a capital expenditure of $250,000 will be needed. 39 ARCHBISHOP MOLLOY HIGH SCHOOL 2008 Giving Report

Mission Statement: Archbishop Molloy High School is a Catholic, Marist school which fosters an exemplary education in mind, body and spirit for a diverse college bound population. Molloy offers a unique, challenging and comprehensive program of instruction, guidance and athletics. Here individuals recognize their self-worth and develop a lifetime of Christian values, critical thinking, leadership skills and service to others. Giving Thanks for your Generosity As we celebrate our 50th Anniversary it is my pleasure to report that Stanners continue to support Archbishop Molloy High School with their time, talents and financial gifts. Your generosity and spirit enable us to continue the traditions established at St. Ann s Academy and Archbishop Molloy High School. With your continued support, our mission as a Catholic, Marist school will live on for another 100 years! This Giving Report represents our commitment as Alumni, Faculty, Parents and Friends to Molloy s mission in a day and time when the financial challenges for families are greater than ever. Since our last report, many things have taken place at the school. The need for scholarship support continues to grow. We have more than 25 named scholarships supported by the Stanner Alumni Association. Our students show their appreciation through their academic performance and commitment to the more than 50 programs offered at the school. Our 50 year-old building is in good condition, but needs constant care and upgrading. This year alone, through the generosity of the Alumni Association and with our Alumni contacts in the construction industry we were able to install all new, energy efficient windows throughout the building. Our Athletic programs have grown exponentially over the past ten years and your support has enabled us to renovate the track and field areas offering a quality site for all of our outdoor activities. From the Gospel of Luke we hear the words; To whom much is given, much is required. As you reflect on your time at Molloy and the preparation you received here we ask that you consider your annual commitment to the school. Our commitment is to the next generation of Stanners. Your support is needed each year, and especially, this year. The Stanners for Life campaign will create a blend of endowments and capital funds to secure our long term future. Your annual contribution will sustain our operational activities to ensure that the interim needs of our students are met today. Happy 50th Anniversary! Stephen T. Kimmons Executive Director Office of Advancement
