14 Panel 1: Series key messages (LANCET series executive summary, 2008) In poor countries, maternal and child undernutrition is the underlying cause of more than one-third (3.5 million) of all child deaths under the age of 5 years preventable through effective nutrition interventions operating at scale Pregnancy to age 24 months is the critical window of opportunity for the delivery of nutrition interventions.
