1 HST 206 Strategies for History Majors Jenny Presnell 212 King Library Books (scholarly monograph) Intended for an academic audience and an extensive, in depth discussion of a single topic by an individual, or perhaps co-authors, the scholarly monograph is distinguished from other types of books, such as a collection of essays by many scholars around a single topic, or a collection of essays by one scholar on may topics. Monographs, because of their length, can thoroughly examine large topics in-depth. In comparison, a journal article is usually limited in page length and thus is often narrower in scope. Sources of Books Miami s Online Catalog What Miami U. has access to, including books, journal titles, videos, children s books, even internet sites! OhioLINK Linkage of the institutions of higher learning throughout the state in a union catalog. You can search in one database, jump from Miami s database, and have books sent to you, and through a separate process, journal articles as well. Worldcat Another union catalog of libraries sort of worldwide, but primarily from the U.S. and Canada, although many libraries throughout the world do participate. However, it is not comprehensive. Journals. Journal sources tend to be more up to date, in part because journals publish articles more frequently, and also because journal article topics tend to be more cutting edge. The audience for journals is academics, specialists, and researchers in the field on which the journal focuses. Often this is a narrow audience. Some sample titles include: Oral History Review, Early American Review, and Nineteenth Century Feminisms. Journals are one of the ways that researchers communicate with one another. The language in these articles can be quite specialized and sometimes less accessible to general readers. The frequency of publication is usually quarterly or less. Articles contain lots of footnotes and a bibliography of sources. Magazines are read by the general public and reflect the culture, ideas, and politics of the day. The language used is more accessible to all levels of readers. These publications usually contain images and either report or provide summary information on research or topical issues. They usually contain little or no documentation, such as footnotes, bibliographies, or complicated statistical evidence. Magazines are generally published more frequently than journals: monthly, weekly, or twice monthly. Magazines are considered primary sources because they report on events and reflect public attitudes and opinions. Journal Indexes America: History and Life MiamLINK Research by Subject History Historical Abstracts MiamLINK Research by Subject History See MiamLINK Research by Subject History for a fuller list. 1
2 Internet. The nature of a website seldom leads visitors to a single conclusion as a book or journal article. Often websites are collections of materials, primary sources, papers of an organization, etc. Because there are no publishing controls, the Internet can have not only very good quality websites, but sites that intend to deceive or have a particular desire to sway your opinion. Search Directories Librarian s Index to the Internet Directory of websites on all subjects, including history. WWW-Virtual Library History Index. Massive directory of sites focused on history and covering all eras and countries imaginable. Best of History Websites Selective collection of sites for students and teachers of all levels and all areas of history. History Guide Very comprehensive. German site, but multilingual with scholarly websites. European focus. Humbul Humanities Hub Large directory of websites with good coverage for Europe and Canada.
