1 Collection Level Finding Aid Wheelock College Library Archives Boston, MA ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICES Title: Records of Administrative Offices Date: 1947 on-going Quantity: approx. 4 cubic feet, 5.5 linear feet (8.5 document boxes, 1 oversize box) Collection Number: 7 Restrictions Access: Access to the collection is unlimited. Copyright: Requests to publish material from the collection should be submitted to the Library Director. Administrative Information Acquisition: The collection was the donation of Wheelock faculty and staff. Processing Information: The collection was processed by Adrienne Pruitt in The collection was rearranged based on archival principles. Acidic materials such as newsprint, and some materials marked with mold, were photocopied onto acid-free paper and then discarded unless the original had some intrinsic value. Duplicate materials were deaccessioned. Historical Note Lucy Wheelock founded Wheelock College in 1888 to educate teachers of young children. As the necessary functions of the school changed, the administrative departments evolved in tandem. For many years Miss Wheelock conducted all administrative business herself, or with the help of a handful of assistants. Miss Laura Holmes Reed 10, Miss Wheelock s niece, became the first Registrar when the office was created in The Wheelock School became Last revised

2 Wheelock College in 1941, and the positions of treasurer and financial secretary were created, and later subsumed into the department of Finance. The Career Planning and Placement Office, established in 1977, had its origins in the placement office that began in the mid-1940s. Public relations were administered by the President s Office until 1970, when the Office of Public Information and the Publications department took over these duties, merging to become the Public Relations Office in The first director of Alumni Affairs was hired as an administrative officer of the College in In 1981, the Office of Academic Advising was established; advising then fell to various deans and academic departments before the Office was resurrected in The Student Development Office was created in 1984, and the Academic Affairs Office in In 1994, the former maintenance and personnel departments were renamed Facilities Management and Human Resources. The Information Technology Office was created in to support the increasing use of computers in education. Scope and Content Organized into series: A. Registrar; B. Academic Affairs; C. Finance; D. Career Planning and Placement; E. Public Relations; F. Alumni Office; G. Information Technology; H. Academic Advising; I. Human Resources; J. Facilities Management; K. Student Development; L. College memos, announcements, flyers. The collection consists of newsletters, flyers, memoranda, brochures, programs, invitations, schedules, clippings, handbooks, and questionnaires relating to Wheelock College Administrative Offices. Memoranda in the Alumni Office series include a press release and photos of Director Priscilla Ide, appointed in A 1995 draft of Academic Advising philosophy is included in that office s memoranda. The Public Relations Office series contains photographs, press releases, publication samples, correspondence, ephemera, collections of published newspaper articles relating to Wheelock ( In the News ), and a scrapbook with many photographs and newspaper clippings dating from There are also materials relating to the 1993 resignation of President Gerald Tirozzi.
