2 a) Scope and Purpose: Findings of Diyala WASH Assessment The purpose of this assessment is to assess current needs and gaps in Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) sector in informal IDP settlements and host communities of Diyala Governorate in response to local partners request to the WASH Cluster to consider the urgent WASH needs in this area. Furthermore, analysis of such information has identified priority areas to inform decisions on WASH intervention. It will also help to determine which locations, population groups and communities have been most severely affected and determine geographical and programmatic areas of priority. b) Methodology: WASH information has been collected from each household (census method) of informal IDP settlements and host communities of Diyala district. Distribution of household by location is shown in the table below: Settlement/Community Households Distribution (%) Ahmed Hilal Alyaan Bani Rechab Dakey Ibrahim Bug Hasan Charad Ibrahim Fenjan Karim Dawood Khanken Al Ekhwa Mekhas Ali Khan Mula Rahman Nuri Qabiya Qal Ah Qrameen Rizqary Shirk Taj Manjal Yosaf Chayeb Total Structured questionnaire has been designed comprising of basic household information (household members, monthly household income, status of assistance received, status of host family); access to WASH services (latrine, shower, water storage tank); condition of those WASH services; practices of other WASH components such as water treatment for drinking, garbage disposal, sewer system, flushing and ventilation in the latrine, and septic tank. (Please see the details of questions in Annex A (at bottom of this document)). 2
3 Local enumerators were hired and trained on data collection. WASH Program staffs supervised data collection work and ensured the quality of data collected. Data entry form has been designed using Kobo Toolbox and staffs from Partner NGO called People Aid Organization (PAO) has entered the data in close supervision of SC staffs and data has been cleaned and analysed using Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) software. Particularly basic descriptive statistics has been calculated to present the key findings. c) Key Findings: Major findings of the assessment have been briefly presented in the following sub-sections of Background Information; Access to WASH Services and its condition; Garbage disposal; practice; Drinking water access; and Other WASH practices: Background Information: There are total populations in 2152 households. Out of 2152 population, 5795 (49.1%) are children. Furthermore, there are 205 people with disability in 179 households. Only slightly more than one-fourth (26.9%) of total households have received support. Living condition of the population is quite poor. Household indicators are presented in the bullet points below: Total Household: 2152 Total Population: Average HH Size: 5.4 Adult Male: 2945 Adult Female: 3048 Child Male: 2977 Child Female: 2818 People with Disability: 205 HH with Disability People: 179 HHs Assistance Received: 576 (26.9%) Host Family: 946 (44.0%) Living Condition: a. Unfinished building: 770 (35.8%) b. Rental house: 626 (29.1%) c. Open area: 8 (0.4%) d. Camp: 2 (0.1%) e. Tent: 1 (0.0%) f. Not Stated: 745 (34.6%) Monthly Household Income a. Less than IQD: 769 (35.7%) b IQD: 87 (4.0%) c IQD: 9 (0.4%) d. No response: 1287 (59.8%) 3
4 WASH Accessibility and Condition: Majority of the households (80%) have access to at least one WASH facilities (latrine, latrine for the disabled, water storage tank and/or, shower). However, condition of these WASH services is quite poor and needs some kind repair (please refer to the finding presented below in bullet points and the following table) Total households access to at least one WASH Facilities (%): 1718 (80%) a. Only 3.0 percent of population disposed using waste pit and bury (0.3%). Please see the details as below: a. In field: 7.8% b. Open Dumping Area: 65.5% c. Burning: 23.5% d. Waste Pit: 3.0% e. Bury: 0.2% Drinking Water Access: Majority of the population depend on Dug well (51.2%) for drinking water, followed by River and streams (31.7%). Less than one-tenth (6.8%) of the households consider 4
5 available water is drinkable and rest of the households express that there is no drinkable water which is available to them. Only about one-third households (30.4%) treat water before drinking. Source of Drinking Water a. Dug Well: 51.2% b. Hand Pump: 0.6% c. Tube Well: 2.6% d. Community Gravity Supply Scheme: 4.6% e. Government Water Scheme: 9.4% f. Others (River, Stream): 31.7% Water Drinkable/Clean: 146 (6.8%) as per the respondents Water Treatment before drinking: 655 (30.4%) Other WASH Practices: Out of 2152, only 33 (1.5%) household have access to sewer system and slightly more than fifty percent of the households have septic tank. Similarly, only 136 (6.3%) of households have flushing system in their latrine and 349 (16.2%) have ventilation system in their latrine. Sewer System: 33 (1.5%) Septic Tank: 1095 (50.9%) Flushing System in Latrine: 136 (6.3%) Ventilation System in latrine: 349 (16.2%) d) Conclusion In sum, overall WASH condition in the IDP informal settlements and host communities of Diyala district is poor and there is dire need of support not only in term of building and repair of WASH facilities but also in terms of WASH behaviour change communication. 5
