3 TIER 1 COURSE DESCRIPTIONS Course Title ART Big Ideas in Art Planning Offered: Oct 2009 Presentation by Art Curriculum Art Differentiation within the art, photo, and graphics classroom for the talented and others Offered: Oct 2009 Presentation by B.Alexander, M. Buffington VCU Art Ed, N. Cozart, HCPS Art: Examining and Grading the student Portfolio Target Audience Art, Photo Art Photo 9 12 Art Photo Hours 6 Primary Strand Course Utilizing Big Ideas and aligning essential understanding and inquiry to promote creative productions and learning. Why are Big Ideas overarching and how do they integrate broad course content for long term learning in the art department? How does the idea of using overarching themes change the planning of an artist lesson? Is anything left out or is more gained? Differentiation for gifted, talented, and student at all ability levels. How do artists plan for those who have differences within the same unit or lesson? What should differentiation look like? Review and study the development of rubrics for unit plans, daily lesson plans and portfolio evaluation processes. Follow up/ Extension Expand upon overarching themes and ideas that can be integrated into the production of art (on going throughout the year). Expand upon inquiry and the use of media, techniques, processes through mentor lead workshops and student portfolio development and examination. (On going throughout the year.) Teachers will develop model rubrics and on going portfolio evaluations of student products with an emphasis on growth, skill, idea development, and inventiveness for specific lessons and units. Continued sharing of professional ideas related to evaluation will be expected as well as the collection of artistic growth related data over time.

4 Art: Integrating Art History and Social Studies Through the study of Artists And their Images Offered in 2007 Art, Hanover County Public Schools Professional Development Storytelling through the Visual image will be emphasized through the study of artists such as Jacob Lawrence and R. Bearden. The relationship to the times in which they lived, narrative painters of the 20 th Century and colorists will be compared and contrasted. Presentation by Rebecca Jones, Arts Council of Richmond Art/ and Photo Integrating In Design and Mixed Media for Artistic Communication Offered 2008 By Ward Saunders Art: Art History and AP Exam Pro Skills for the Art Room Teacher Facilitator: Jen Stackpole, PHHS Microsoft Office Suite Art, Photo, 6 Art and Examining the blend technology, graphics software and traditional art materials and techniques. (Teacher Facilitator: Ward Saunders, graphic arts, PHHS) Design lesson in art that integrate hands on methods of learning art history. Explore emerging artists and their research methods to develop meaningful and symbolic ideas and images (example: Kehinde Wiley, 21 st cent artist, NY) Explore how Exam Pro and AP Studio Art tools form AP Art History Workshops can be utilized in all art, photo, and graphics classes. Learn the basic features of the Microsoft Office Suite standard on HCPS computers including Word, Excel, and Publisher Create sample documents using each feature Teachers will develop on going plans to continue the integration of technology as a creative tool to be utilized with traditional media within the art, photo, and graphics classroom. The integration will provide support for the use of technology and related software as students work individually and in groups to respond to specific concepts in a creative manner. Develop on going units and lessons to support the study of art history and utilize Exam Pro to create aligned assessment resources. Understand and use Microsoft Office on an on going basis 4
