7 BASIC RESEARCH Our key research interests are: A) Glomerular diseases. B) Renal fibrosis. C) Uremic vascular calcification. D) Stem cells E) Systemic lupus erythematosus Within the above listed areas we pursue the following lines of research: A) Glomerular diseases. 1) Translational experimental studies on the diagnosis and therapy of glomerulonephritides, with particular focus on the role of growth factors and cytokines 2) Experimental studies on cellular and molecular mechanisms of glomerulonephritides with focus on glomerular parietal cell- and podocytefunction, regeneration and apoptosis 3) Development of new models of glomerulonephritis. 4) Investigations to understand the glomerular filtration barrier. 5) Regulation of glomerular angiogenesis.
8 B) Renal fibrosis. 1) Translational experimental studies on the diagnosis and therapy of renal fibrosis, with particular focus on the role of growth factors and cytokines 2) New biomarkers of renal fibrosis. 3) In vivo imaging of renal fibrosis, including non-invasive molecular imaging and 2-photon microscopy. 4) Development of new models of renal fibrosis 5) Regulation of angiogenesis in renal fibrosis 6) Studies on calcineurin-inhibitor induced renal fibrosis C) Uremic vascular calcification. 1) Role of calcification inhibitors in uremic calcification 2) Relation of vitamin K metabolism and uremic calcification 3) Ultrastructural analysis of vascular calcification 4) Treatment of uremic vascular calcification D) Stem cells 1) Experimental studies on the therapeutic application of mesemchymal stem cells in renal disease 2) Studies on side effects and safety aspects when using mesenchymal stells 3) Studies on the effects of uraemia on stem cells
9 COMMENTS Our laboratories have established a wide array of methods with a strong focus on animal models of renal diseases and wide range of transgenic animals, in vivo imaging methods, renal histology, immunohistochemistry and fluorescence, molecular biology, models of vascular calcification, in vitro experiments using renal cell lines and various primary cells.
