Johannes Van Gelder bap. Mar. 5, His will dated Oct. 8, 1772, as of Upper Precinct, Cape May County, New Jersey, mentions sons Abraham, John, Isaac and Jeremiah; daughter-in-law, Margaret; grandson, William Robenson (NJA:34-543). Married (1st) in New York City, Aug 17, 1723, (MDC:139) Maria Koning daughter of Hyman and Marretie (Andries) Conink bap. May 31, 1702 (BDC:283), wit. Titje Anderies, widow of Johannes Poel. Johannes married (2nd), in New Jersey, May 22, 1729 (NJA:22-9) Elizabeth Adams who is mentioned in the will of her mother Rachel Addams (NJA:32-6). Perhaps married (3rd) July 21, 1757, Hannah Scull. The will of his brother, Abraham, shows that John Van Gelder settled in Cape May County, New Jersey, where he founded the branch of the family which adopted the spelling Van Gilder. After the War of Independence and the movement of the population from the older settlements on the Eastern seaboard began. Before 1820 a large number of this family joined the migration to the Ohio River country while others settled in Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Tennessee. John was in Great Egg Harbor, N. J., as early as 1731 and later resided in a place the family named Littleworth which in 1849 became Petersburg, N. J. As the early records of Cape May County are very fragmentary, the list of births, after the baptism of the second child, is incomplete. The data was furnished by Sarah Swain Van Gilder, daughter of Peter Corson Van Gilder; Caroline Van Gilder, wife of Dr. Furman R. Weed of Cheshire, Ohio; Caroline Franklin Van Gilder of Baltimore, Md., daughter of Warren Van Gilder, and others of the later generations. "Another branch using the Van Gilder spelling were descendants of Johannes Van Gilder ( ) who sailed the New Jersey coast and settled in Cape May County where he was recorded as John Vangelder. This is probably the largest existing branch of the family to carry on the Van Gilder surname. Its connection with the New York family had been suspected and was definitely proved a few years ago when Miss

This will is referred to in three places in Liber B, Cape May County records; it made bequests to two living nephews there and to a niece and nephew in New York City." - baptism: 1701 Mar 05; Abraham Van Gelder, Cathalina Post; Johannis; Johannis Van Gelder, Maria Cornelis wife of Elyas Post - marriage 1: Aug; John van Gelder; Maria Koning - marriage 2: NJA:22-9, - family 2: 2: 3: 3b: 3c: - baptism: 1673 Dec 13; Jan Van Gelder, Tanneken Montenack; Abraham; Abraham de Lanoy, Marritie de Lanoy - marriage: - baptism: 1675 May 19; Elias Pos, Marritie Cornelis; Catalyntie; Lodowyck Pos, Agnietie Bonen - marriage: - baptism: 1697 Oct 10; Abraham Van Gelder, Catalina Post; Maria; Andries Marschalk, Tanneke Van Gelder wid - baptism: 1699 Jul 30; Abraham Van Gelder, Catalina Post; Elisabeth; Harmanus Van Gelder, Angenietje Post 4: The most prominent of the early Van Gelder families in America was that of Johannes Van Gelder and Tanneken Montenac. No record of the date of his arrival in New Amsterdam has been found but a manuscript listing certain descendants was received from a Morristown, N.J., descendant. It says that he was "born about 1635 or 1640 in Holland." The records of early New York are filled with items pertaining to him and his descendants. He had a son Johannes, three grandsons and at least three great-grandsons with the same name. At times the name is recorded as Jan, sometimes as John Vangelder or van Gelder and that of his wife as Janneken or Jane Montenancy or Montenack. In 1662, the year that his first child was born, Johannes presented to the council a petition for a license to keep a school "for teaching to read, write and cipher." This was granted September 21, 1662 (MCC:X, 215). The records from New Amsterdam from 1653, the year municipal government was organized with a Schout (Sheriff), Burgomaster (Magistrate), and Schepens (Councillors), to 1674, show that in 1662 he was plaintiff in a suit for 3 guilders, 16 stivers and his wife Janneke Van Gelder, lost a court case in which she was defendant; in 1663 he was sued by Isaac Grevenraat for default; in 1664, when the English took New Amsterdam from the Dutch, Johannes swore allegiance (CDNY:III,77). At that time he was referred to as attorney and was defendant and plaintiff in suits and twice curator for estates. In 1665 he was assessed 1 florin and was listed as a grain measurer and a resident of Marketfield Alley (Val. Hist. of N. Y., p. 128); in 1666 he
7 7 of 13 06/19/14 17:32 acted as judge in a court case; in 1670 he was again appointed Grain Measurer; in 1672 he obtained judgment as paver in a street repair case; and in 1674 he owned "third class land" to the value of about two thousand dollars on the east side of Broadway between Beaver and Wall streets, then known as part of the market field. The Minutes of the Common Council show that in 1676 he was assessed 0:6:3 and taxed one-half penny and the following year a similar amount for land at "Markett Fiel d & Broadway." In 1684 he acted as a funeral director. (Stokes Icon. V. 4. P. 330). At this time John Van Gelder and his wife Janneken Monterack, were listed as members of Reformed Protestant Church, commonly called the Dutch Church, and as residents of Marckvelt (Marketfield) Street. Johannes and his wife, their daughter, Hester Roome, and her family resided; in 1686, at 1 Breede Weg and at another time at 16 Breede Weg. On July 12, 1689, Jan, or possibly his son Jan, is recorded as the chief actor in a liquor raid; with him were soldiers from the fort at the Battery which was then under the control of Jacob Leisler of Leisler Rebellion fame (CDNY:III,600). In 1693, he appeared as a witness in a court case and at the baptisms up to From 1695 to 1699, Johannes or his son was assessed various amounts, presumably representing a house and other real estate located in the West Ward, the amounts ranging from five to twenty-seven pounds. As the Indians were driven out of the territory between the Hudson and Delaware Rivers, the descendants of this family spread out over northern New Jersey, especially in Bergen, Passaic, Sussex, and Morris Counties where some of them still reside. In this branch John Van Gilder ( ) began to use the "i" in the surname. Another branch using the Van Gilder spelling were descendants of Johannes Van Gilder ( ) who sailed the New Jersey coast and settled in Cape May County where he was recorded as John Vangelder. This is probably the largest existing branch of the family to carry on the Van Gilder surname. Its connection with the New York family had been suspected and was definitely proved a few years ago when Miss Sarah Swain Van Gilder, daughter of Peter Corson Van Gilder ( ), discovered a recorded but unpublished will of Abraham Van Gelder (1716-c. 1812) in New York City. This will is referred to in three places in Liber B, Cape May County records; it made bequests to two living nephews there and to a niece and nephew in New York City. Johannes probably died in in 1697 as on Oct. 10th of that year Tanneken was recorded as a widow at the baptism of Maria Van Gelder; she was still living in February 1703 when she was a witness to the baptism of Pieter Roome. - death: wife listed as widow in grandchild's baptism 5a: 5b: 5c: 5d: - baptism: 1662 Jan 26; Johannes Van Gelder, Tanneken Montenack; Hester; Johannes de Peyster, Marritie de Lanoy - marriage: Nov; Pieter Willemszen Room, jm van Goemoenipa; Hester van Gelder, jd van N. 11 11 of 13 06/19/14 17:32 Agnietje Boonen's marriage record indicates that she was born in the Duchy of Meurs (Moers, Germany). Assuming she was no older than seventeen when married, Agnietje should have been born before about Although we have no baptism record from Moers, it can be proven that Agnietje Boonen was the first child of Willem Boonen and Judith Beck. After their marriage, Willem Boonen & Judith did have enough time to have a child Agnietje before the baptism of the first child they had baptized in Amsterdam, who was actually their second child. Agnietje Boonen and Lodewyck Cornelisz Post did not name a child Judith; however since Judith had died when Agnietje was only ten or twelve years old, probably they did not feel the need to name a child after her long-dead mother. Not all Dutch colonists, and not all of those in Patria, followed what has been assumed by various researchers to be "the normal" or So-called 'traditional' Dutch naming patterns. Also note that simply because an ondertrouw (marriage intention) was filed and recorded in Amsterdam, this does not necessarily mean the couple married there, nor that they lived there. Both parties here (Willem and Judith) were not from Amsterdam originally. Possibly their first child was born at a place closer to one of their hometowns. Agnietje Boonen's marriage record says she was born in (Duchy) Meurs (Moers), which is in Germany close to the Dutch border. Willem Boonen was from Ruhrort near Duisburg, which is only eight kilometers east of Moers. Judith was from Rodermunde (now called Roermond), which is a very old city in the Dutch province of Limburg, close to the German border and about 75 kilometers or 46 miles southwest of Ruhrort and Moers. We are as sure of these locations as can be after using geographical sources including an extensive geographical reference called "Geografische verwijzingen notarieel en ondertrouw" which was assembled by Simon Hart, the head archivist of the Amsterdam Achives during the 1950's and '60's. He extracted place-names from old marriage records and notarial acts in their repository, and determined where these places were and what they are called now. Absolute proof that Agnietje Boonen was a child of Willem Boonen can be found in the following: In a 1662 property transaction, Agnietje Boonen is an heir of Willem Boonen, and a co-heir of several younger siblings whose baptisms were recorded in Amsterdam. Therefore we know that Agnietje was THIS Willem Boonen's child, and probably the oldest, since she was already having children in See Stadsarchief Amsterdam - Archief van de Schepenen: kwijtscheldingsregisters: Transportakten voor 1811: NL-SAA In this act, the heirs of Willem Boonen sold a house and lot of theirs in Amsterdam on 9 June, Abstract and explanation: Willem Bonen died in late 1661 or early in There were six heirs: 1. Elsje Jans, named as the widow of deceased Willem Bonen. Frederick Boonen (her son) is her guardian in this transaction; 2. Dirck Boonen \ } together co-heirs [sons] of deceased Willem Boonen; 3. Jan Boonen / 4. Frederick Boonen representing himself, as Willem's son and as co-heir of brothers Dirck and Jan; 5. Lysbet Boonen, whose guardian is her husband Pieter Barents. She lives elsewhere, possibly 'Zinde' which might be in the province Overijssel near the German border; 6. Agnietje Boonen, wife of Lodewyck Cornelisz van Naarden, who live in Nieu Nederlandt (the New Netherland colony). They have sent proof of their agreement to the sale by notarial act, which was examined and accepted by magistrates at Utrecht, dated 16 Feb These six heirs are selling their property to a consortium of four parties, each of whom buys 1/4 of the whole. The buyers are together represented by Abraham Wesselinghs.

Property included a house and lot, adjoining wall, lead gutter and outbuildings, all enclosed by a fence. The house has a sign depicting the "Wapen van Pruijssen" nailed to its gable. The two guarantors for the buyers were relatives or probable relatives of Willem Boonen: a) Luycas Lescalier -- certainly related: Luycas Lescalier'a daughter Lysbeth was Dirck (Willemsz) Boonen's wife. b) Dirck Brughe -- unclear at this time exactly how related, but Willem Boonen's second wife was Elsgie Jans van Brugh.
