The Royal College of Music in Stockholm is internationally renowned as a very important centre of excellence in music. This means resources are vital if they are to continue to appeal to and retain the best students and teachers Princess Christina, Mrs Magnuson.

3 Would you like to be a part of shaping the future for Swedish music? You now have the unique opportunity to play a part in the future for Swedish music! Whilst Swedish musicians are finding success across the world, the Royal College of Music in Stockholm (KMH) is faced with perhaps its most important challange yet. KMH is building an entirely new campus in central Stockholm, with the goal of becoming the world s most modern college of music. We have an important responsibility. We re shaping the next generation of musicians and educating the stars of tomorrow, explains Professor Cecilia Rydinger Alin, Vice-Chancellor of KMH, Sweden s only independent college of music. Akademiska Hus (a property company) is responsible for the construction, whilst the financing of infrastructure, technology and other furnishing is achieved through external funding. Now, you as an individual, company or organisation have the opportunity to lay the foundations for world-class musical education and research together with KMH.

4 KMH for everyone KMH was founded in 1771 and is one of the oldest colleges of music in the world. KMH s new buildings will be erected at the junction Valhallavägen/Lidingövägen, where Swartlings Ridskola (horse riding school) was previously situated. The new campus comprises 15,883 square meters and will be complete in With new architecture, new facilities, new technology and the music college s international renown, KMH will attract new students, teaching resources and an appreciative audience. The goal is for KMH to become a new national centre of music with exciting and transnational activities, scientific and artistic research, that offers a large number of concerts. KMH will be open to everyone a college that concerns all of Sweden. I can honestly say that I have KMH to thank for the fact that I play music across the world today. The palette of musical skills I obtained from KMH inspires me to create new music every day. I hope many more will have this opportunity in the future. Magnus Lindgren, jazz musician and composer.

7 World-class tuition KMH already provides a broad education of a high international standard. There are a number of famous alumni (former KMH students) within all genres, including: Peter Mattei, Anne Sofie von Otter, Malena Ernman, Staffan Scheja, Sofia Karlsson, Magnus Lindgren, Martin Fröst, Robert Wells, The Real Group, Dirty Loops, Pernilla Andersson, Peter Jöback, Roland Pöntinen, Rigmor Gustafsson and Christian Lindberg. KMH has six departments for the education of musicians and teachers: FOLK MUSIC one of few European departments of music with tuition at all levels in Swedish folk music and folk music/art music from other cultures. JAZZ internationally renowned has educated many successful instrumentalists and singers. CLASSICAL MUSIC this department has produced many generations of famous instrumentalists and singers, orchestra musicians and church musicians. MUSIC AND MEDIA PRODUCTION the programme in music and media production is a model for other schools of music around the world. MUSIC EDUCATION the department of music education shapes the teachers and pedagogues of the future. Within the scope of KMH s departments, there are a number of ensembles such as the KMH Symphony Orchestra, KMH Jazz Orchestra, KMH Chamber Choir, KMH Brass Ensemble, Igor Chamber Orchestra and KMH Folk. COMPOSITION, CONDUCTING AND MUSIC THEORY the department has a solid reputation both nationally and internationally. The Swedish music miracle is not a myth. It is very much a reality. And it s a marvel! From opera singers and classical soloists to the Swedish House Mafia, Style of Eye and Icona Pop. Swedish music, Swedish musicians and Swedish producers are seen and heard across the planet. KMH is a big and important part of this miracle. 8 The future of Swedish music KMH now has the opportunity to continue to build on the Swedish music phenomena. The new KMH campus will consist of two new buildings surrounding the stable complex, which is a listed building. The old stables will thus constitute the central atrium of the campus. While Akademiska Hus is financing the actual construction, KMH has taken the initiative for and is orchestrating the financing of the infrastructure required to achieve KMH s ambitious goals. Fundraising is now underway to finance the concert halls for symphony orchestras and chamber music, experimental and creative workshops, and a studio complex with several recording studios and control rooms. The infrastructure costs are estimated at SEK 114 million. KMH is very grateful for the funds already received in order to facilitate the construction for research and education in the area of music. 10 New social forums for music The concert halls and studios will meet the technological and acoustic requirements that are to be expected of a worldleading college of music. Main Concert Hall KMH needs a concert hall that facilitates the development of its students and gives visitors the best experience possible. The ambition is for KMH s main concert hall to become a scene to be reckoned with among the wide variety of music scenes in Stockholm, as well as being home to KMH s Symphony Orchestra. The Small Hall In addition to the Main Concert Hall, a room adapted for smaller ensembles in all genres is required. The hall will offer the best imaginable audio technology and acoustics as well as well-developed opportunities to work with amplified music. Chamber Music Hall A chamber music hall is being built for acoustic music. This hall will be open to all genres of music and is suitable for classical musicians as well as for folk music, unplugged singer-songwriters, jazz and much more. The Black Box The aim of the Black Box is to offer a room for experimental forms of concerts. Audio technology is also an important element. The room will be available for both recording and smaller performances. Studio Complex The Studio Complex will offer students a number of world-class practice and recording studios. It will feature audio technology for advanced recording and composition of electroacoustic music. The complex will also facilitate superior music, image and web production and offer high-class connectivity with the concert halls and the rest of the world, for instance, in the form of distance education. I spent some fantastic years at KMH, and it provided me with a good foundation. The opportunity to meet other young musicians of the highest level inspired me to develop my instrument my voice. I know that KMH has evolved over the years, and there is an incredible amount of knowledge there. It is important that we invest in this high-class and diverse musical education so that we can continue to give the world musicians and singers of all genres and of the highest international standard. Our partners will play an important part in creating the best conditions for KMH to carry out educational activities, research and productions of the highest quality. 13 The global music industry is undergoing a transformation. Research within subjects such as music and health is central, and the next generation of musicians are also the musical entrepreneurs of the future. KMH is investing in becoming a leading national and international force in this change. A new campus with modern infrastructure and technology will help KMH to take a big leap into the future. As a former student ( ) I can say with some confidence that winds of change have been blowing at KMH for some time. There is a great interest in teaching and broadening the musicianship of the students. They delve into Arty Business, where the new students learn about entrepreneurship. The new building is an incredibly exciting step. Many of us former students are eagerly cheering on the efforts. Sweden is far along in knowledge of musicianship. Now we can move even further ahead with a fantastic building for upcoming musicians and music teachers. Robert Wells, musician. It was at KMH that we started Dirty Loops. It meant a lot to be able to test our knowledge in many different subjects within the field of music. The things we learned there, we could then apply to our music. 14 When I started at KMH in 1984, we studied different programmes and courses that provided knowledge in specific professions. But after just a few months, we were in full swing with the inspiring development of The Real Group. Between our regular lectures we met and laid the foundations of a three decade-long artist career with the entire world as a playing field. We believe that the key to successful artistic education lies in the combination of the established syllabus and the more spontaneous meetings with other kindred spirits among students and staff. The facilities play a central role in both of these, and must be optimised for both traditional knowledge dissemination and more impulsive artistic cross-fertilisation. For me personally, it was a time of musical development, and many of the kindred spirits that I met during my studies became, and still are, my fellow travellers in a constant exploration of a new musical universe.
