Enhedens navn Anaerobic Digestion Waste Anaerobic Digestion Biogas Electricity Fuel Heat Digestate Separation Solid fraction Liquid fraction Low DM and P content High mineral N and K content High organic N Medium mineral N content Most of total P

Ammonia emissions The most important pathway through which nitrogen is lost from animal manures Reduces nitrogen fertilizer value Eutrophication of N limited natural ecosystems Soil acidification and nutrient leaching ΝΗ 4 + ΝΗ 3 (aq) + H + NH 3 (g) Mitigation Techniques Dietary modifications Limit exposure to atmosphere (cover / rapid incorporation) Reduction of volatile N species (NH 3 ) Acidification Adsorbtion Immobilisation

Objectives of the study Upgrade the solid biogas digestate Organic soil amendment and fertilizer Solid digestate Acidification/Abso rbing materials Composting Drying

Objectives of the study Upgrade the solid biogas digestate Organic soil amendment and fertilizer Solid digestate Acidification/Abso rbing materials Composting Drying C recalcitrance N mineralization P release Plant N and P availability Soil C sequestration

Hypotheses Some of the hypotheses to be tested in this study are: Acidification and/or addition of absorbent materials will result in lower ammonia losses during composting and drying of the solid digestate Acidification of the solid digestate will increase P solubility and availability The addition of biochar to the solid digestate will reduce the decomposition rates of the latter

The effects of pre-treatment Acidification Use of strong acids Effects of ph reduction Nitrogen Reduces NH3 volatilization (Kai et al., 2008) Carbon Reduces carbon mineralization rates (Fangueiro et al., 2010) Phosphorus Favors soluble forms of P (Malik et al., 2012) Used in: Storage stage Application stage

Enhedens navn The effects of pre-treatment Absorption materials High affinity for absorbing N forms Biochar Clinoptilolite Sphagnum peat moss Increase C mineralization rates??? Decrease Ν mineralization rates??? Increase the extractable forms of P???

Research plan and methods Acidification Composting Biochar Bulking agent Clinoptilolite Solid Digestate Peat Soil application Acidification Biochar Drying Different T Absorption materials Clinoptilolite Peat

Enhedens navn Composting of the solid digestate Addition of sulfuric acid 3 levels of ph Addition of absorption materials 2 ratios of mixing

Enhedens nav Drying of the solid digestate Addition of sulfuric acid 3 levels of ph 3-4 different drying temperatures 3 ventilation rates Addition of absorption materials 2 ratios of mixing 3-4 different drying temperatures 3 ventilation rates

Enhedens navn Research plan and methods Laboratory work and analyses DGT Incubation studies Pot and field trial work Screen plant nutrient availabilty Nutrient depletion trial
