6 Patient Satisfaction Patients are now informed consumers of healthcare Patient satisfaction scores for hospitals is public information Both hospitals emphasized process improvement to improve the quality of patient care In the near future, patient satisfaction scores will determine how hospitals are reimbursed by Medicare Incentive for hospitals to reach their goals in patient satisfaction

7 Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) National, standardized survey of hospital patients Must have at least 300 discharged patients fill out the survey a year About 33% return rate (Rush) HCAHPS scores for every hospital posted on the Internet Allows consumers of healthcare to compare scores between hospitals and to the state and national benchmarks

11 Hospital Administration and Resource Allocation Iroquois Memorial Hospital 1 Board of Trustees Board of trustees are important figures in town Services Offered: Resident Home, Home Health/Hospice, IMH Hospital, Emergency Department, IMH Ambulance Service, Outpatient Rehab, Satellite Clinics, Medical Staff, Volunteers, Home Care Contracts with nearby tertiary care facility

12 Hospital Administration and Resource Allocation Rush University Medical Center 1 Board of Trustees Tertiary Care Facility Specialized--orthopedic, ED, etc. Academic Medical Center A lot of money from research

16 Common Challenges Both have similar resources structures, IMH is just on a smaller scale, so they face many of the same challenges Patient Transport IMH building is older and more complicated due to lack of funds to update Rush campus is large (and expanding) and can be confusing for a patient Older buildings patient perception of cleanliness Never know what you re going to get
