$ $ $ $ Community Colleges Over 1,200 community colleges in the U.S. provide the first two years of a four-year college or university education leading to an associate degree. Community college courses are transferable toward a bachelor s degree at more than 2,000 4-year colleges or universities in the United States. Students can save $15,000 to $37,000 in tuition costs by going to a community college first. start here$ Tuition fees on the average range: $5,000 to $9,000 finish here State Universities Private Universities 4-Year Colleges State universities offer both bachelor s and master s degrees, as well as some doctorate degree programs. These institutions are part of the U.S. public education system and receive funding from the state in which they reside. Tuition costs are generally lower than those of private universities. OR Private universities provide both undergraduate and graduate programs with a significant focus on master s and doctoral programs. Funding support comes from tuition, investments and private donors, not from the state. Tuition fees tend to be higher at private universities than at state universities, but are the same price for both U.S. residents and international students. OR These institutions are predominantly private (without state funding) and provide students with the opportunity to earn a bachelor s degree with a liberal arts focus. Tuition fees are the same for both U.S. residents and international students. Tuition fees on the average range: $12,000 to $28,000 Tuition fees on the average range: $30,000 - $45,000 Tuition fees on the average range: $20,000 - $40,000 Examples: California State University System, State University of New York, University of California System or State University of Florida Examples: Duke, Harvard, Stanford, USC or Yale Examples: Boston College, Claremont Colleges, Cooper Union, Harvey Mudd, Oberlin and Tuskegee. 5 the United States Educational System The higher education system in the United States includes: Doctoral Degree 4+ YEARS Community Colleges (also known as technical or junior colleges) that offer the first two years of a university degree at lower tuition costs and focus on student learning. Students can earn an Associate of Arts (A.A.) or Associate of Science (A.S.) degree. Master s Degree 2+ YEARS Four-year Colleges and Universities that offer bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees. Most four-year institutions will accept course credits earned by community college students. An associate degree allows students to transfer into a four-year college or university as a third-year student. Upon completing another two years of study, students can earn a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) or Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree. Community College Bachelor s Degree 4+ YEARS Associate Degree 2+ YEARS High School Diploma 13+ YEARS TOTAL 4 YEARS SEMESTER/ QUARTER Systems The academic year is divided into F-1 visa students are required by U.S. immigration regulations to maintain full-time status while studying in the United States. A full course of study is to complete 12 units per QUARTER, fall, winter and spring. You are not required to take classes during summer, winter and spring vacation. A full course of study is to complete 12 units per SEMESTER, fall and spring. You are not required to take classes during summer and winter vacation. 5
Grade Point Average (GPA) Students in the American educational system are evaluated by their grade point average (GPA). A Letter Grade Grade Points A 4 B 3 C 2 D 1 F 0 B Grades are standardized levels of measuring comprehension in educational courses. C Community college students transferring to four-year colleges or universities are required to meet the GPA requirements of the institution where they plan to transfer. Grades are assigned as letters (A,B,C,D,F) as well as in a number scale ( ), with A and 4.0 being the best. D A GPA is the average of grades on the number scale during a quarter, semester, or cumulatively. For example, a student that received a 4.0, 3.2, 2.5, and 3.5 as his/her grades for a semester would take the sum of their grades and average them out to a GPA of 3.3. F 6
The 2+2 Path 2+2 is a process in which students complete two years of education at a community college and then transfer to a four-year college or university to obtain a bachelor s degree. plus 2 Years at a Community College 2 Years at a Four-Year College or University = a Bachelor s degree Students that transfer to four-year universities should be aware that universities and colleges differ widely in courses they accept for transfer as well as GPA requirements. It is important to understand each institution s respective transfer policies. 2+2 is successful if the transfer path and requirements of universities are followed. Otherwise, it will take longer than 4 years to obtain a Bachelor s degree. Many community colleges have transfer agreements with public and private four-year institutions. These transfer partnerships help students make smooth transitions into four-year institutions. STUDENTS NEED TO MEET WITH AN ACADEMIC ADVISOR before taking any classes to allow for a smooth and efficient 2+2 transfer process. 7
International Student Services and Advising Advisors at the International Student Services Office provide assistance to meet the diverse needs of international students in all aspects of college life in the United States. All new international students MUST check in with the international office as soon as possible after arrival. International Student Services include: Initial orientation Registration in classes for new students Academic advising Assistance with matters of cultural adjustment Advisement and authorization on student visa and benefits such as travel, practical training and extension of programs Development of educational plans consistent with each student s life goals Providing students with accurate information about academic progression, degree requirements and transfer Assistance with academic policies and procedures Helping students to access campus resources Aiding students with personal issues 8
Preparing for 2+2 It is important to set goals and make decisions early in the academic process in order to transfer and graduate quickly and efficiently. Intent to transfer should be declared after earning the first 15 credits. A major should be declared at the mid-point of the community college program and possible transfer universities identified. Transfer institutions should be identified based on factors such as cost, location, size, services, and academics. A four-year transfer guide will help the student to select courses needed to complete the transfer to the selected institution. Students should be mindful of academic calendars and deadlines for potential institutions. University applications should be submitted in a thorough and prompt manner. Once admitted, housing and scholarships applications need to be completed. New student orientation sessions should be attended to familiarize students with their new institutions. Upon arrival, students should meet with academic advisors at their new institution. 9
Advice for Transfer Students Maintain focus. Losing sight of goals may prolong the academic process. Do research! Make sure you are familiar with all aspects of the institution to which you are transferring. Make sure to start at a regionallyaccredited community college and transfer to a regionally-accredited university. Be mindful of deadlines. A missed deadline will prolong the transfer process and length of time at a community college or university. Get involved and make friends. This is one of the best ways to have a smooth and stress-free transition into a new institution. Make academic success the highest priority to fulfill transfer goals. Study hard to ensure GPA requirements are being met. Utilize the help of academic advisors and any materials provided to assist in the transfer process. Be aware of housing options and scholarship opportunities that the university offers before deciding where to transfer. 10
Accreditation Accreditation is a review of the quality of higher education institutions and programs. In the U.S., accrediting agencies are private, non-governmental organizations created to review the quality of higher education institutions and programs. There are six major accreditation agencies that are the most authoritative, as recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) and the U.S. Department of Education. 6 Accreditation Agencies Western Association of Schools and Colleges Accrediting organization for: Hawaii, California, and Guam. Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools Accrediting organization for: New York, Delaware, Maryland, District of Columbia, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, the Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico. North Central Association of Colleges and Schools Accrediting organization for: Arkansas, Arizona, Colorado, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Michigan, Kansas, Minnesota, Nebraska, Missouri, New Mexico, Ohio, Oklahoma, North Dakota, Washington, and Utah. New England Association of Schools and Colleges Accrediting organization for: Maine, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, and Vermont. Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Accrediting organization for: Florida, Alabama, Kentucky, Georgia, Mississippi, Louisiana, South Carolina, North Carolina, Texas, Tennessee, and Virginia. Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges Accrediting organization for: Idaho, Alaska, Montana, Oregon, Nevada, Washington, and Utah. Credits taken at institutions that do not have accreditation status will not transfer to an accredited college or university. Community colleges and universities are accredited by the same accrediting agencies. All participating community colleges and universities in this publication are regionally-accredited institutions. Make sure the college you apply for is regionallyaccredited by one of the six agencies! ACCREDITED COMMUNITY COLLEGE ACCREDITED 11

2+2 = a Successful Formula A Simple Step-By-Step Path 2 Years in a Community College + 2 Years in a 4-Year College or University step 1 Meet with an academic advisor and enroll in a transfer degree at your community college Enroll in a degree (Associate of Arts, Associate of Science, Associate of Fine Arts) determined by your intended major. Meet with an academic advisor to help you get started. Look over your transfer degree checklist to help visualize your path. step 3 step 2 Look Forward Choose a four-year college or university; do plenty of research. Make sure you are meeting all GPA requirements for transfers. Choose a major or visit an advisor if you have trouble choosing. Apply to a Four-Year University Meet with an advisor for help with the application process. Meet all deadlines. step 4 Graduate From Community College and Move On to Your Chosen Four-Year Institution Meet with your advisor to ensure that you are ready to graduate. Send your final transcripts to your chosen four-year institution. Attend transfer student orientation at your four-year institution 13
Transfer Agreements Transfer agreements (or articulation agreements) are formal agreements between a two-year institution and a four-year institution. They define how courses taken at a community college can be used to satisfy the subject matter requirements at a four-year college or university. Transfer agreements and requirements are unique to and vary between institutions. Terminology for transfer agreements may vary from state to state. For Example: California uses the term Articulation Agreement. Virginia uses the term Guaranteed Transfer. Washington State uses the term Direct Transfer in reference to transfer agreements. Although the terminology can be different, the process is generally the same. It is the student s responsibility to meet with an academic advisor to ensure that all transfer agreement requirements are met. 14
