For Psychology majors without teaching certification but still interested in working with children in a school setting, all public school systems hire special education aides, teaching assistants, paraprofessionals, or educational support personnel (ESPs) to work with their special education students. These jobs are typically fulltime, often with reasonable pay and benefits. Your degree in Psychology is certainly relevant and ought to make you attractive. Maybe check with the school system you attended as a student. See also the listing of private special education schools below. Private Special Ed. (SPED) Schools (may not require teacher certification): Teacher & other types of positions (for ex., educational/therapeutic/behavioral/support services, especially paraprofessional & teachers assistant / aide positions) may be available - so be creative & flexible with job titles & positions. There are many opportunities to work with children with a variety of special needs in these schools. Your Psychology background should prove both relevant and attractive. Obviously, if you re a certified teacher, especially special ed., these schools are quite relevant although employment with these schools will probably not pay into the State Teachers Retirement Plan.
