HP StoreEver Data Verification (CVTL) Support anual INTRODUCTION This document provides information for QStar Archive anager (AS) users to configure and manage QStar AS support for HP StoreEver Data Verification (Command View Tape Library - CVTL) services. The HP CVTL services provide possibility to verify HP tape media (using HP LTO Ultrium drives) in order to make sure that stored data is accessible. INTEGRATION WITH QSTAR AS The QStar AS software provides possibility to store user s archive data to tape using several tape formats. Once files are stored on the tape they reside there until requested by the user. From this point of view the data is kept on the tape for long time periods (tens of years) and ideally, the user has tools to verify that tape media is still accessible and data can be retrieved from the media reliably. The CVTL provides exactly this possibility. The media is submitted to the CVTL software and verified for media health. If media is found not to be 100% healthy the QStar AS software may take steps to copy data from media to another one in order to extend data life beyond the life of the physical media. Page 2 of 20

HP StoreEver Data Verification (CVTL) Support anual Figure 1. CVTL components. There are several QStar AS subsystems engaged in the media verification process. 1. Tape library configuration subsystem. This subsystem provides possibility to define network connectivity parameters to CVTL and to physical HP library. In addition the various verification scheduling parameters can be defined through this configuration subsystem. 2. QStar AS scheduling subsystem. This subsystem provides scheduling of the utility which actually executes requests to the CVTL services. 3. The CLI utility to perform manual media verification. 4. The GUI pages to manage display of the verification results. There are differences in how to manage CVTL support in QStar AS related to the operating system platform. In Windows all tasks can be performed through Windows QStar AS Administrator GUI pages. In UNIX systems the preference is to use Command Line Interface utilities. The same CLI utilities can be used to manage Windows CVTL support and that allows to use those CLI utilities in Windows scripting and other languages such as PHP or Perl. Page 3 of 20

HP StoreEver Data Verification (CVTL) Support anual CONFIGURATION REQUIREENTS A license for HP StoreEver Data Verification CVTL v3.9.x or higher must be purchased from HP for a determined number of tape media. User needs to know several parameters of the CVTL service and tape library in order to successfully complete configuration process. In particular, user needs to know: IP address of the CVTL system Network port of the CVTL system User name for CVTL system Password for CVTL system IP address of the supported (by CVTL system) tape library controller. Password for the library (required for the SL 6480 libraries only) This information cannot be discovered and needs to be retrieved from the IT administrator who installed CVTL software. SUPPORTED PLATFORS The CVTL verification is supported for the following platforms: Windows 64 bit 2012, 2008 Linux RedHat V6.x and Ubuntu The builds for other Linux platforms may be provided on request. Solaris 10 and Solaris 11 AIX 6.1 and 7.1 CONFIGURE CVTL SUPPORT IN LINUX AND UNIX CVTL configuration is performed through XL file for Linux, Unix and Windows. The file location is /opt/qstar/vl/files/ext_lib_config/ext_lib_config/library_name.xml. Here the library_name is the QStar AS library name configured during SCSI configuration time. For example: jb.xml. The configuration file is processed by the CVTL file editing utility qac. For example, if CVTL enabled tape library is called jb the qac command shall be called as follows: qac c jb The manual editing of the configuration file is discouraged. During initial library configuration in Linux/UNIX (see INSTALL script) once tape library is defined and it is of the type supported by CVTL (ESL G3 or SL 6480) the qac utility is started automatically. CONFIGURE CVTL SUPPORT IN WINDOWS Page 4 of 20

HP StoreEver Data Verification (CVTL) Support anual If QStar AS Windows GUI discovers that particular library (using Vendor and Product ID strings of the library from SCSI INQUIRY CDB) potentially may support CVTL, the library configuration page will provide button [HP CVTL]. That signals to the user that CVTL may be configured for this library. Figure 2. QStar AS configuration page CVTL indicator. Once [HP CVTL] button is clicked the pop-up page will provide possibility to define CVTL and library parameters and define default verification schedule, if HP StoreEver Data Verification has been licensed by HP. Please execute CVTL configuration when QStar AS servers are running. Page 5 of 20

HP StoreEver Data Verification (CVTL) Support anual Figure 3. CVTL configuration parameters. Complete CVTL parameter definition by clicking Save and Exit buttons. After this CVTL verification schedule should be defined. Default is to start CVTL operations is once in an hour: Figure 4. Configuring CVTL schedule. Once CVTL parameters configuration is done the actual verification may be initiated. Scheduled CVTL job may be checked and edited on the Delayed Jobs page of QStar GUI Page 6 of 20

HP StoreEver Data Verification (CVTL) Support anual Figure 5. CVTL verification job EAIL NOTIFICATION IN WINDOWS To enable notification please set to true _notification parameter in CVTL configuration file. That will enable operations in CVTL subsystem. The is actually sent by QStar AS software which needs to be configured in Windows QStar AS GUI. Page 7 of 20

HP StoreEver Data Verification (CVTL) Support anual Figure 6. notification configuration in Windows In Linux and other UNIX systems please check QStar AS documentation for instructions how to configure for particular platform. In essence there are several processing scripts in /opt/qstar/install directory (send_notification, send_collapsed_notification) which needs to be edited and adjusted for particular UNIX system and client installed. ANUAL EDIA HEALTH VERIFICATION QStar AS uses a specific drive mode for media health verification. This mode of operation was selected because QStar AS controls all tape drives and media in any library partition and needs to coordinate media verification process with regular QStar AS operations, such as data writes and reads. The command line utility cvtlcmd allows to initiate manual media verification and is used to perform scheduled verification operations. In order to manually initiate particular media verification, user should select tape drive to be used. For verification process the tape drive needs to be empty and can be determined by executing command jbstatus d library_name For example: jbstatus -d jb Drive Drive Drive Drive 1: lto3-r lto4-rw lto5-rw online full loaded slot 1a 2: lto3-r lto4-rw lto5-rw online empty loaded slot 33a 3: lto3-r lto4-rw lto5-rw online empty 4: lto3-r lto4-rw lto5-rw online empty Page 8 of 20

HP StoreEver Data Verification (CVTL) Support anual In this particular case the drives 3 and 4 are good candidates to be used for media health verification. Assuming that drive 4 is selected, the manual media verification can be started using following command: cvtlcmd l jb s 6 d 4 t q where: -l jb specify library name -s 6 specify library slot number to verify -d 4 specify drive number to be used -t q specify verification type, in this case quick verification. For example: cvtlcmd -l j b s 5 d 3 t q Result: OK : [Authentication Successful] Result: OK : [DV service started] Start DV Engine library serial number [2U ] at IP [ ] totalaggregatedlicenses : [500] totalaggregatedavailablelicenses : [379] controlpanelentry 1: availablelicenses : [379] dvenginestate : [Running] libodel : [ESL G3] libsn : [2U ] totaldrives : [104] totallicenses : [500] totalailslots : [12] totalslots : [12] defaultverificationtype : [Quick] libfirmware : [680H.GS24401] defaultverificationtype : [Quick] Setting library [jb] drive [3] and slot [5] to offline. Verification manual start from GUI This will create job that will start on the top of the minute. Job execution status can be verified on the Delayed Jobs page. AUTOATIC EDIA VERIFICATION To perform scheduled media verification user shall schedule cvtlcmd execution using vlsched utility (UNIX, Windows) or GUI page for Windows. First, please make sure that CVTL utility execution is not already scheduled and remove such job if it is. Use vlqlist utility or GUI page Delayed Jobs to clean up previous schedules. The recommended scheduling period for CVTL utility is one hour. In this case CVTL utility will be started at specified minute of the hour and perform several verification tasks before actually requesting CVTL to execute operation: 1. If QStar AS is running. 2. If there are storage libraries supported by CVTL (HP G3, SL 6480 etc). 3. If there are free drives to use. 4. If the blackout-times to run CVTL are passed. Essentially cvtlcmd utility will start verification in the background if all other media related operations are not running and blackout time is not active. Page 10 of 20

HP StoreEver Data Verification (CVTL) Support anual For example, the following command line will create a job cvtl to be executed on 25-th minute of every hour to start media verification of the media in the library jb in automatic mode. vlsched -p /opt/qstar/emg/bin/cvtlcmd -s "25 */1 * * *" -j cvtl "\-l jb -f" Once started the cvtlcmd utility will check QStar AS database to select media for which verification is due and start CVTL operation. Once verification is completed, the next media will be selected until all scheduled for verification media are verified. The verification results are saved in QStar AS media health database (which contains CVTL and other media health information). Each instance of media health verification will result in a separate file and those files constitute media health database. The media database files are located in directory /opt/qstar/vl/files/media_statistics in UNIX systems or C:\QStar\vl\files\media_statistics directory in Windows. For each media known to the QStar AS there is directory created using media barcode and serial number of the media. For example following directory is created for media with barcode EU7605L5, vendor HP and serial number : bc_eu7605l5_sn_hp The directory contains series of XL files where media health information is accumulated. User may view XL files but should not modify them in order to prevent errors during file processing by cvtlcmd and other utilities. To change schedule (or reschedule) of automatic media verification using QStar GUI please use Delayed Jobs page. Figure 8. Automatic media verification using CVTL schedule. The result of this configuration will be the same as that configured using command line utility vlsched above. It will create job cvtl to be executed on 25-th minute of every hour to start media verification of the media in the library jb in automatic mode If there are day times when verification should not be executed, those times shall be configured using CVTL support configuration tools (see sections Configure CVTL support ). User essentially can black-out certain time periods to prevent CVTL operations to take place. The scheduled cvtlcmd operations will still be started at every schedules interval and they will be stopped immediately if a time is blacked-out. DISPLAYING EDIA HEALTH VERIFICATION RESULTS The media health verification results can be displayed using Windows QStar AS GUI. To display verification please select media of interest as this is shown on Figure 7 and use popup menu or edia Health button. Last or current verification logs is available from Verification Report menu item Page 11 of 20

HP StoreEver Data Verification (CVTL) Support anual Figure 10. CVTL processing results for selected media In UNIX systems the data base files can be printed for analysis using following command: /opt/qstar/qscsi/bin/qscsicmd media_health_info -i /opt/qstar/vl/files/media_statistics/bc_eu8351l5_sn_hp /stat.xml This command produces output where CVTL related information is at the end. The message returned by CVTL in this case looks like following: There is insufficient data on the tape for data verification which required a minimum sample size of 19GB for LTO-3, 30GB for LTO- 4, 38GB for LTO-5 and 39GB for LTO6. These are the NATIVE data sizes (after compression) which may vary from the reported data on the tape. In the case of partitioned tapes, the test required the same minimum data in every partition to be tested. Page 13 of 20

HP StoreEver Data Verification (CVTL) Support anual The QStar AS tracks the media status and if media does not have required written capacity (essentially if media is listed as erased in QStar AS database) the cvtlcmd utility will not attempt to load that media for verification. The message returned by automatic verification procedure will be as follows: slot xxx SKIP (Surface ERASED) where xxx is a slot number in the storage library. EDIA HEALTH DATABASE BACKUP edia health database provides valuable information related to the history of the media and its health over longer periods of time. It very well could be that several computers will be replaced but tape media will stay the same for long periods of time. Therefore it is recommended to backup media health database and restore it to the same location if QStar AS is reinstalled on different computer or QStar AS installation is lost due to a disk crash, or other catastrophy Following directories shall be backed-up: In Linux: /opt/qstar/vl/files/media_statistics In Windows: C:\QStar\vl\files\media_statistics The CVTL configuration files may also be backed-up, but after their recovery the configuration needs to be verified because CVTL location may be changed. EDIA VERIFICATION SCHEDULING Here are HP recommendations on the default frequency for verification. There are two use cases for the tapes. Tape could be in an offline vault or in a library. It is assumed that the tape is always stored in a temperature controlled environment. Case 1. If the tape is in library. The recommended frequency is as follows: 1. Run three tests in a year. i.e., test should be run every 4 months. 2. Quick test should be run 2 times and the third time should alternate between oderate and full. 3. Hence the tape will be verified with moderate and full test every alternate year. Case 2. If the tape is in vault. It is advised to run the full test every 2 years to have a piece of mind. Obviously user may use own judgment and change verification periods accordingly based on media usage and resource availability. PROCESSING EDIA COPY ACTIONS AND SYSTE RESOURCES If media health analysis requires media copy the resource availability should be taken into account. To copy media at least two compatible drives are needed and the media copy may take up to 8 hours to complete. If system experience heavy load conditions the immediate scheduling of the copy may add additional load and cause normal operations to delay even more. Page 14 of 20

HP StoreEver Data Verification (CVTL) Support anual The solution is to start automatic media copy only when there are at least 2 free drives and number of the drives in the system is at least 4, although higher numbers (8+) are ideal. In other cases the volume media copy request shall be queued into QStar AS Console where system administrator may schedule the copy job for particular time or manage it otherwise (for example delete). DRIVE ASSESSENT TEST Starting from CVTL Version: there is a possibility to verify drive health. The drive assessment test should be executed when media verification tests return error and there is a suspicion that media is healthy but error may be caused by the faulty drive. The drive assessment test should be executed using known-to-be-good media. The recommendation is to keep in known library slots a set of good media (preferable HP-branded) and use then only for drive assessment tests. The drive assessment test are not executed or scheduled on periodic basis. It is up to the system administrator to ton drive assessment tests as needed. QStar AS will verify that media selected for the drive assessment test is listed as erased in storage library database. If media is not in erased status it is recommended to perform media refresh to make sure media can be overwritten. NOTE: drive assessment test destroys all data on the media! Please take any necessary precautions to avoid data loss because of media reshuffling in the tape library after library doors are open or service operations performed. The system administrator shall determine beforehand drive number and slot number with erased media which will be used for verification. Drive assessment execution test using command line interface The drive assessment test can be started in interactive or command mode using cvtlcmd utility. Assumptions: The drive number to be verified: 3 The library name is: esl The media slot number: ake sure the media in slot 61 is erased : a. vllsdev esl 61 b. vllsdev esl 61 61a: erased TiB Tape 2. The estimated time for LTO-6 drive is about 1180 seconds (about 20 minutes). 3. To start drive assessment test in command mode (user needs to make sure that slot number contains media which is is really erased ): a. cvtlcmd -l esl -s 61 -t t -d 3 This operation mode is provided for usage in scripts and assumes that media is erased. The utility nevertheless will verify that media is actually erased and will request confirmation. If media turns-out to be used in some of the QStar AS sets the following messages will be printed: Refusing to run drive verification test on [Belongs to Set] media, slot [20], barcode [ABG947L6]! Please select erased media for drive verification test because the media content will be *** destroyed ***! Please select media which is known to be good (or at least new). In case of errors please use HP-branded media to perform drive verification. End data verification: 02/02/ :37:46 Error on exit: [edium is incompatible with destination] Once drive assessment test is finished user may request drive verification results using options 28 or 29. FEATURES ADDED The first version of CVTL support in QStar AS was implemented in QStar AS version Following new features and changes were added starting from build Page 19 of 20

HP StoreEver Data Verification (CVTL) Support anual 1. SL6480 library support. 2. Drive load counts are taken into account to select drive for testing. The drive with less media mount/unmount count will be selected first. 3. Barcode for UNKNOWN surface is stored in QStar DB. This improves media tracking possibilities. 4. Status verifying is displayed for surface under testing in Online media page and vllsdev command output. This provides possibility to monitor current status of the CVTL activity. 5. Following media status will prevent CVTL verification: a. edia is loaded in the drive b. edia is not accessible (media which is reported not accessible by the changer READ ELEENT STATUS CDB) c. edia open by QStar AS for read/write operations d. edia marked as bad 6. Added log message to syslog and notification to return exported medium for verification. 7. If blackout period is encountered the cvtlcmd utility exits immediately. 8. Added possibility to open all log files in QStar AS log directory. 9. Drive health assessment test. APPENDIX A: CVTL CONFIGURATION FILE The default CVTL configuration file is created from template located in the directory /opt/qstar/vl/files/ext_lib_config/templates/health_check_configuration_template.xml. In Windows the configuration files are located in directory C:\QStar\vl\files\ ext_lib_config\templates\health_check_configuration_template.xml. For each storage library defined in the QStar AS configuration the new configuration file is created and it can be edited using GUI (CVTL) button for the CVTL enabled libraries or CLI utility qac. The particular files for the library configuration are located in directory /opt/qstar/vl/files/ext_lib_config/ext_lib_config/and files are called library_name.xml where library_name is the configured storage library name. It is discouraged to edit those files manually. Page 20 of 20

HP StoreEver Data Verification (CVTL) Support anual APPENDIX B. CVTLCD UTILITY OPTIONS The cvtlcmd utility may be executed in interactive mode or automatically depending on the specified options. In automatic mode cvtlcmd essentially will select media to be verified depending on the history of the verification and configuration parameters. The utility will select a free drive to be used for verification and will obey black-out periods specified in the configuration file. The drive and media status will be declared as offline and will stay offline until the test is finished (or timeout is reached). In interactive mode utility may be used to perform ad-hoc verification of some media (specified by the slot number in the library or by the barcode). The utility also provides possibility to execute specific requests to the CVTL service, like retrieve all information from the CVTL database related to particular media, start/stop verification engine, check licenses, etc. The interactive mode is targeted for troubleshooting and development/debug purposed rather than for the end-user. It requires certain familiarity with CVTL API (documentation and architecture). The CVTL support requires special CVTL Licensing option. The demo license includes such option. The cvtlcmd in interactive mode uses configuration file and therefore immediately connects to the CVTL engine and tape library. If some configuration parameters are incorrect the connection will fail. The menu items in cvtlcmd utility using interactive mode corresponds to the CVTL API call numbers as they are stated in CVTL documentation. There are 26 CVTL API calls and correspondingly 26 menu items. The cvtlcmd provides additional menu item numbered as 30 which does not correspond directly to CVTL API call. The menu tem 30 is used to monitor active test execution started in current cvtdcmd session. The verification progress will be printed on the screen and at the end of the test the media and drive will be declared available for QStar AS (offline status will be changed to online). cvtlcmd usage statement cvtlcmd CVTL license: Enabled Please specify CVTL-enabled library name QStar AS media health check subsystem: HP CVTL data verification utility Usage: cvtlcmd -l library [options] -l library - Specify library name to use for testing Where main options are following: -s slot_num - library slot to verify -b barcode - barcode of the media to verify -d drive_num - drive to verify (default: get free drive) -D drive_sn - drive serial number to get results assessment test -t q m f d t - verification type (q -quick, m - moderate, f -full, d default, t drive assessment test) -f - automatically locate media for verification and save statistics -F - suppress verification and just list of media to be verified -T q m f - save default verification type (q -quick, m - moderate, f -full) -A - abort running test on library slot (-s) or barcode of the media (-b) -S - get status of the data verification for cartridge -c - forced copy after data verification (if -s or -b) -I - Ignore blackout period settings. 23 HP StoreEver Data Verification (CVTL) Support anual APPENDIX C. CVTL ESSAGE CODES AND QSTAR AS ACTIONS The CVTL media verification result is processed by QStar AS and following actions are taken (see first column of the table): - anual action required. QStar AS will send and log event related to those codes and will expect administrator to correct situation. For example, install license, specify correct IP addresses, clean drives, etc. R - Repeat. QStar code will attempt to repeat operation on the different drive immediately or during next execution cycle. The number of repeat actions are limited to the number of available drives. If verification is still in error the manual action is declared. F - Failed. The media which returned those codes will be declared as "Failed" and configured actions will be executed. G - Good. Event is logged, saved into data base and no special with such media will be executed. In some cases (like insufficient data written) there is nothing to do except to wait for more data to be written. arg - arginal media health. Actions assigned to arginal tapes will be executed as configured by the administrator. Type essage code essage text There was a problem in unloading the tape. Please remove the media 1000 from the drive. There was a problem in loading the tape. Please try this tape with another 1001 drive. If the error persists, it may indicate that there is a problem with the media. Drive has failed to reset from read in encryption mode. HP recommends performing a drive assessment test to verify correct drive operation and 1002 then to repeat the data verification test. If the error persists, HP recommends that you copy the data to another tape An abort request was received while verifying encrypted data. The drive 1003 has been reset to stop the verify read encryption function. Data Verification for encrypted data has encountered a problem while verifying the data. It does not necessarily mean that data is bad. HP 1004 recommends performing a drive assessment test to verify correct drive operation and then to repeat the data verification test. If the error persists, HP recommends that you copy the information to another tape Data Verification for encrypted data has encountered a problem while initiating the data verification. HP recommends performing a drive 1005 assessment test to verify correct drive operation and then to repeat the data verification test. If the error persists, HP recommends that you copy the data to another tape Drive has failed to set to read in encryption mode. HP recommends performing a drive assessment test to verify correct drive operation and 1006 then to repeat the data verification test. Please check the drive, and try to reload the data cartridge before re-running the test. The test has finished checking the quality of the data on tape ($g_cartridgesn) but not all of it is above recommended threshold of HP for full read-back confidence. The data is still readable but we recommended to migrate the data to a different tape to prevent any potential data retrieval issues in the future. The test has finished checking the quality of the data on tape ($g_cartridgesn) but not all of it is above recommended threshold of HP for full read-back confidence. The data is still readable but we recommend to migrate the data to a different tape to prevent any potential data retrieval issues in the future. The test has completed successfully and detailed analysis of the data on tape shows that it is GOOD. There was a problem trying to access the tape s cartridge memory. This could be due to a faulty tape or an unsuccessful tape load. It does not necessarily mean there is anything wrong with the data. Please try reloading the tape or try with a different drive. If the error persists, HP recommends that you copy the data to another tape Analysis of tape ($g_cartridgesn) indicates that the EOD information in the cartridge memory is invalid. Valid EOD is a pre-requisite for running data verification. This indicates an interrupted backup or archive, but it should still be possible to recover the data from the tape. HP recommends that you copy the data to another tape. There is insufficient data on the tape to test. Please load the data cartridge with minimum data (19GB for LTO-3, 30GB for LTO-4, 38GB for LTO-5, 39GB for LTO-6) and re-run the test. Page 24 of 20
