2 MEDIEVAL AND MODERN HOARDS 323 DENMARK SIX EARLY MODERN DANISH COIN HOARDS MICHAEL MÄRCHER [PLATES 45 49] The contents of these hoards were sent to the Royal Collection of Coins and Medals, the National Museum of Denmark in Copenhagen in accordance with the Danefæ (treasure trove) provisions. * = illustrated coin. Hopballe (uncertain Danish location, perhaps between Vejle and Jelling in Jutland) Dep. c Å In small silver coins were found by farmer Jens Olesen s son Mads Jensen about one meter below the surface when he was digging gravel near his father s farm in Hopballe. The Royal Collection kept 10 of the coins and returned the rest. The finder received two rigsbankdaler (half thalers) as a reward. Today, no coins in the collection can with certainty be ascribed to the hoard (FP 1) which consisted of coins of the Danish king Christian IV ( ) and the Dukes of Holstein. The latest coins were probably dated Disp. 10 or fewer coins probably preserved at The National Museum of Denmark, The Royal Collection of Coins and Medals; the rest are dispersed. 8. Grønnegade, Rudkøbing, Langeland Dep. c Å In 1878, the barber J.F. Valbum found a coin hoard while taking up a floor in his house in Grønnegade Street, which lay close to the town hall in Rudkøbing on the Isle of Langeland. This led to the discovery of a hoard of 313 silver coins. The latest coins are three Danish pieces dated The hoard may have been buried during the Scanian War (1675 9). The coins weighed c.5.6 kilograms and are registered as FP 444 in the Royal collection. Barber Valbum was rewarded with 570 Danish kroner. 16 coins were new to the collection, and 27 coins were kept because they were better specimens than the ones already in the collection. The 27 coins which were replaced and the remaining 270 hoard coins were considered duplicates and probably used for exchange according to the then practice. Only 14 or 15 of the coins in the Royal Collection (which are illustrated here) can today be attributed to the hoard. None of these belong to the group of high quality, more or less contemporary, counterfeits which were identified by Sven Aagaard though extensive die studies in the early 1990s. 1 1 S. Stenmagle O(d)strup, Zealand Dep. c Å In 1874 a farm labourer, Niels Eliasen, from Stenmagle O(d)strup on Zealand found a coin hoard in a field at Stenmagle O(d)strup belonging to a farmer, Søren Pedersen. The latest coins are dated As there are none of the very common coins from 1677 this suggests the hoard was probably buried in during the Scanian War (1675 9). The coins weighed 3 This well-preserved specimen replaced a coin (Dev. 2926) from the Devegge collection. The Royal Collection of Coins and Medals received about 7,000 coins from the collection created by Ole Devegge ( ; assistant at The Royal Collection of Coins and Medals ; curator ).
5 326 COIN HOARDS grams and lay at a depth of centimetres by a big stone in an area which used to be forest. The hoard is registered as FP 366 in the Royal collection. The finder was rewarded with 20 Danish rigsdaler. Four coins (three 2 skilling coins and no. 271) were new to the collection, and five coins (all 2 skilling coins) were kept because they were better specimens than the ones already in the collection. The five collection coins replaced by better specimens and the remaining 263 hoard coins were considered duplicates and probably used for exchange. Only two coins (nos 182 and 271) in the collection can with certainty be ascribed to the hoard today. 4 Denmark-Norway Christian IV ( ) 1. 8 skilling, 1607, Copenhagen (Hede, p. 27, no. 93A) mark, 1614, Copenhagen (Hede, p. 28, no. 99) skilling, 1624, Copenhagen (Hede, p. 33, no. 134A) skilling, 1625, Copenhagen (Hede, p. 33, no. 134A) skilling, 1626, Copenhagen (Hede, p. 33, no. 134A) skilling, 1627, Copenhagen (Hede, p. 33, no. 134A) skilling, 1629, Copenhagen (Hede, p. 33, no. 134B). 12. Galster, Møntfund i Sorø Amt, Aarbog for Historisk Samfund for Sorø Amt 17 (1929), pp. 3 26, no Such coins do not exist from the 1650s, but were struck from 1665 to A mistake in transcribing the date or in the attribution must have occurred at the time. A coin from 1655 with the monogram would have been unique and kept for the collection.

7 328 COIN HOARDS The 11 coins (c.250 grams) which were found in 1897 lay in a small clay pot which has not been preserved; four coins (nos 1, 8, 12, 15, weight grams) were found in 1898 and are considered part of the same hoard. They are now registered as FP 741 and FP 749 in the Royal collection. 8 The finder was rewarded with respectively 25 and 10 and a half Danish kroner. Only five coins (nos 1, 9 10, 13 14, all illustrated) were kept in the collection as the rest were probably considered duplicates and used for exchange. No coins were returned to the finder. Galster, Møntfund i Holbæk Amt, Fra Holbæk Amt, 1928, pp , no. 60 but, apparently by mistake, given the wrong date with a tpq of C.R. Bruce et al. 8 MEDIEVAL AND MODERN HOARDS Nyboder, Copenhagen Dep. c Å This hoard was found in October 1872 by four workers digging on the property (land register no. 559) of the master builder R. Larsen at St Annæ Vester Kvarter, Nyboder in Copenhagen at the corner between Enhjørningsgade (now Sankt Pauls Gade) and St Pouls Church. The hoard contained 91 silver coins and was found about 15 to 16 centimetres below the floor of the previous house on the site. The coins were in an iron pot with brass bands and there were traces of a piece of cloth, which had been wrapped around the coins. The pot crumbled but some pieces of it, together with the coins, were sent to the Royal Collection and registered as FP 351. No further information about the pot seems to be preserved. The finders reward was based on the coins metal value: 51 kroner at 7 mark = 59 rigsdaler, 13 3 mark 39 half kroner at 3 mark and 8 skilling = 22 rigsdaler, 4 mark, 8 skilling 18 skilling at 1 mark and 8 skilling = 1 mark, 8 skilling Additional to round up the reward = 3 mark Reward: = 83 rigsdaler. Today, only four coins (nos 20, 43, and 82 83) in The Royal Collection can be ascribed to the hoard. The remainder were probably considered duplicates and used for exchange. Four coins preserved at The Royal Collection of Coins and Medals, the rest are dispersed. 12. Vestermarie parish, Bornholm Dep or after 137 Å In 1877 a smallholder, Pehr Pehrson, found a coin hoard while removing a tree on the boundary between Steensgaard and Gadegaard in Vestermarie parish on the Isle of Bornholm. Most of the coins were different and of the most common types / denominations then in circulation. The hoard may have been all or part of a small collection of the then circulating coins. The variety of different years and mint marks suggest it is perhaps not a completely random sample of the general circulating medium on Bornholm around On the other hand, the 17 examples of the very common 2 skilling 1677 (nos 27 43) do not suggest a collection, nor does the fact that only one coin (no. 77) from the hoard was kept by the Royal Collection. The coins weighed c grams and are registered as FP 410. The finder was rewarded with 40 Danish kroner. All the coins with one exception (no. 77) were probably considered duplicates and used for exchange. 14 C. Lange, Chr. Lange s Sammlung schleswig-holsteinischer Münzen und Medaillen, 1 (Berlin, 1908).
