1 Texas 2 X 2 Reading List Age 2 to Grade 2 Texas Library Association sponsors the 2X2 Reading List solely to encourage free voluntary reading Parent and Child Sharing Time Activities Alborough, Jez. Nat the Cat s Sunny Smile. Ages: 3-6. Watch Jez Alborough read his story on YouTube and try to create a picture like Mr. Alborough s drawings for this book. Discuss feelings and how they can change. How did Nat s pats help Hugo and Billy shake their blue mood? Make a list of things people can do to help bring a smile to the face of others. Think of someone that could use cheering up and do one of the activities on the list for that person. Apps: Tom Cat for Apple and Android - Free Barnett, Mac. Count the Monkeys. Ages 3-6. Invite your child to follow the directions of the narrator as you read the story aloud. Help you child count the animals or characters on each page, including the monkeys on the last pages. Fraidyzoo. Ages: 4-8. Most people are afraid of something. Little T is afraid to visit the zoo, but she can t remember which animal she is afraid of. What are you afraid of? Discuss what your family can do to make you less afraid. Little T and her family create an entire zoo out of supplies they have at home. What real and imaginary animals can you make using materials from your recycle bins? If you can t go to your local zoo right now, you can visit the Smithsonian National Zoological Park s AnimalCams at to see pandas, naked mole rats and other animals. Read a legend about Pecos Bill to learn more about him. Read some of Eric Kimmel's other southwestern tales: Jack and the Giant Barbecue, The Three Little Tamales, The Great Texas Hamster Drive, Cactus Soup. You can hear author Eric Kimmel read some of these stories aloud by visiting discuss any similarities that you discover. - Author Eric A. Go outside on a sunny day to watch shadows. Play with shadows by pointing out how the shadows seem to mimic actions. Discuss what made rabbit afraid of the black rabbit. Why couldn t he get rid of the black rabbit? How did the black rabbit help in the end? Why isn t rabbit afraid anymore?. Apps: Find Rabbit for Android and Stack Rabbit for Apple and Android -Free Lee, Mark. 20 Big Trucks in the Middle of the Street. Ages: 3-7. As you read the story, have your child point out the various--us trucks. Count the trucks on each page. Make a list of all the types of trucks in the story. As you travel around town with your child, keep track of how many of these trucks you see. Have your child draw his/her favorite truck from the story or build a truck out of blocks. Draw a map with sidewalk chalk and let your child drive a toy truck through the city. Think of other scenarios where manners can be practiced such as sharing, inviting people to do things, declining an invitation, holding open a door for others, etc. Talk about how movie trailers are used to interest people in watching movies. Discuss how book trailers can be used to get people to read books. Apps: Backyard Bugs by Lamplighter Games from itunes and Bug Village by CLU Mobile for Android. Murray, Allison. Little Mouse. Ages: 2-5. Mice are little and quiet, while lions are brave and scary. Pretend you are each animal in Little Mouse. How do they act and sound? Do you ever act like these animals during your day? As the little girl is getting ready for bed, she is happy to be her mommy s little mouse. What do you do to get ready for bed? Is it the same every night, or does it change? Pretend you re getting ready for bed right now, and act out what you do. Look at a nonfiction animal book. What words describe each animal? Can you also describe how each animal moves? Now show how that animal moves. What noise does it make? Can you make the animal s noise? Apps: The Lion and the Mouse Free for Androids Lion and Mouse Interactive Storybook Free for ipads Pizzoli, Greg. The Watermelon Seed. Ages: 2-5. Crocodile loves watermelon! What foods do you love, and why? Why was Crocodile afraid when he swallowed a watermelon seed? Eat a piece of watermelon. Count the number of seeds in your piece of watermelon. Draw a slice of watermelon. Using real watermelon seeds, glue them onto your drawing. The Watermelon Seed won the 2014 Theodor Seuss Geisel Award. Discuss this award and check out other books that have won.

List the ways the boy shows his love for his dog. Talk about cause and effect. What is the effect when Patch chases rabbits? What is the cause for Patch having prickles in his fur? Talk about stage fright. Why didn t Patch do any tricks at the contest? Look up information about fleas. Talk about why fleas aren t good for dogs or people. Sing B-I-N-G-O and other fun dog songs, such as How Much Is That Doggie in the Window? Website: Apps: Puppy Dog Sitter by TabTale for Apple Talking Pooch the Dog for Kids by Ozitech Apps for Android. Thong, Roseanne Greenfield. Round Is a Tortilla. Ages: 2-5. Play I Spy with shapes instead of colors or letters. Using kitchen scissors cut tortillas into smaller shapes. Create pictures with the pieces before you eat them. Carve shape stamps from potatoes or foam. Print shape pictures and use an English/Spanish dictionary or an online translation program to label your picture in both English and Spanish. Create a notebook of pictures of construction machines cut from magazines or printed off the internet. Carry it in your car, and as you travel, keep a tally of each vehicle you see. Which vehicles did you see the most often? Which ones do you rarely see? Create your own video explaining how a specific vehicle works. Ask an adult or older sibling to record you while you use your toy trucks as models to show how a real truck operates. This might be a good activity for the backyard or sandbox. If there isn t any construction going on around your home, there are many videos on the internet showing construction vehicles at work. Here s an example of one:

Make your own color book with illustrations describing your colors meanings. You might want to use the text pattern ( My is like ) from My Blue is Happy for your book. The illustrations in My Blue is Happy are mostly monochromatic, which means they have only one color.
