2 Introduction to Management Students would be made to understand the history of management and the different approaches to the study of Management. They would also be exposed to the functions of planning, staffing, organizing, leading and controlling a functional system. Students should also be made to understand the internal & external environment in which an organization functions. The subject is geared toward providing a basic knowledge of the planning function, which involves setting goals and then deciding on how best to achieve them Explain the purpose of business organisations, and their relationship with the environment Identify and evaluate concepts and principles of business organisation and management, including the historical development of management theories and their application to contemporary business Analyse and apply to given situations the process of management, that is, planning, organising, leading and controlling within the framework of managerial decisionmaking, and understand the importance of good communication to successful management Understand fundamental skills and techniques in functional management areas of information management, operations and human resource especially in handling conflicts and change. 3 Principles of Marketing By going through this module, the students will gain a broader knowledge of the role of marketing, both within the within an organisations and the society. They will learn how to use the marketing principles within an organisation, so that the organisation can be more competitive and profitable. 4 Business Finance This module intends to provide a foundation for understanding the principles upon which accounting systems are based, by explaining underlying concepts, existing practices, and alternatives to existing practices. Therefore, this module reviews basic concepts and techniques of accounting and their use in the management practice of today s firm as well as in the preparation of corporate financial statements for external reporting Demonstrate an understanding of the principles and concepts of accounting Show an awareness of accounting methods and concepts and how this relates to satisfying internal and external obligation Demonstrate competence in the preparation of financial and related information Able to interpret financial statements and know its implications for businesses Assessment Course work - Final Examination 1. 6 Introduction to Business Economics This module introduces the way an economist thinks. Business Economics presents models and theories whereby business, social and economic issues can be addressed from an economic perspective 1. Explain how a market system co-ordinates and allocates scarce resources among competing uses and users 2. Apply marginal principles to determine price and output variables under perfect and imperfect competition, and understand the principles behind the contestable market structure 3. Outline how an economic models solves the efficiency and equity issues 4. Explain the reasons why market and government mechanisms may fail to achieve an optimal social outcome 5. Apply economic concepts to determine methods of minimising both market and government failure 6. Analyse the key macroeconomic areas of inquiry (unemployment, inflation, the external sector and economic growth) using a variety of intellectual frameworks.
