Introduction Forum Scientium is a multidisciplinary doctoral programme of natural sciences, engineering, and biomedicine that was established in 1996 by Linköping University and the Swedish Foundation for Strategic Research. It focuses on the professional career preparing aspects of the PhD training. The research projects are planned so that students with different backgrounds (e.g., a physicist and a biologist) are stimulated to work together, each on discipline-oriented issues of the problem studied. This approach generates basic knowledge and novel applications in for example medicine, biotechnology and for sensor research. (For extensive information see ) Since autumn 2008, Forum Scientium also includes a prepostdoc programme, The Forum Scientium Award, also called Transformer (described in more detail on page 10). Within the Transformer programme, members of Forum Scientium can get around 40% financing during maximum one year for training at Linköping University in direct connection to their dissertation. In return, the expertise and experience of the transformers should be available to the PhD students in Forum Scientium. In the beginning of 2009, the doctoral programme Forum Scientium enrolled 68 PhD students and 4 transformers. During the year, 11 new PhD students were admitted as members of Forum Scientium, 16 Forum members defended their doctoral thesis, and two members fulfilled their licentiate exams of which one will continue towards a PhD exam. Two transformers finished and 7 new transformers started their training period at LiU. At the end of 2009, the programme enrolled 62 PhD students and 9 transformers. Members Women Men PhD students Science & Engineering (LiTH) 47 (59%) 28 (60%) 19 (40%) PhD students Health Sciences (HU) 32 (41%) 25 (78%) 7 (22%) Total (67%) 26 (33%) Approximately 60% of the PhD students have their research projects at IFM and 40% do their research at the Faculty of Health Sciences. Forum Scientium will continue to strive for multidisciplinary contacts between the Faculty of Health Science and the Institute of Technology. Forum Scientium receives contributions from Rector, the Faculty of Science and Engineering, the Supervisors and the Swedish Research Council. Description of the programme Forum Scientium is a true multidisciplinary doctoral programme in natural sciences, medicine and engineering sciences. The main goal of Forum Scientium is to examine PhDs well prepared for their future careers in industry as well as in academia. A focus on the doctoral studies through a structured and well-planned curriculum during the full four years of education as well as on excellent science within the research groups are the means to achieve this. For a description of the activities that constitute Forum Scientium, see Appendix 1. The main research theme of Forum Scientium is Life Science Technologies and Biomedicine. It covers projects from molecular interactions, cell signalling, diabetes, amyloid diseases, cardiovascular diseases, inflammation, materials in medicine, blood coagulation and blood flow monitoring, to biosensor developments and applications of electronic noses and tongues. Forum 5 (47)

Scientium collaborates also with CMIV (Center for Medical Image Science and Visualization) and the doctoral programme connected to CMIV. This co-operation is further developed through the Vinnova financed doctoral programme, AgoraLink (described more thoroughly on page 9. Forum Scientium started in September 1996 by accepting 24 new doctoral students with varying educational backgrounds. In January 1999, a second group of 13 students started their studies. After 1999, the admittance to Forum Scientium has occurred continuously. The first PhD was awarded in October 2000, and including the 16 PhD-exams and 2 Licentiate-exam during 2009 altogether 80 PhDs and 11 Licentiate exams have been granted (Appendix 2). The median time spent for doctoral studies is app months, excluding teaching duties and parental leave. PhD students During 2009 altogether 79 PhD students were listed in Forum Scientium. See Appendix 3 for a list of the PhD students enrolled in Forum Scientium during 2009; their affiliation, supervisor(s), basic education, etc. Forum Scientium Dissertations Year Dissertations During 2009, 16 PhD students defended their doctoral thesis and two defended their Licentiates. For a list with details of the exams during 2009, see appendix 4. For a list of all exams within the programme, see Appendix 2. Forum Scientium activities In the following section Forum Scientium arrangements during 2009 are described. All activities taking place within Forum Scientium are more extensively described in Appendix 1. 6 (47)

Forum Scientium summer conference In August, the Forum members together with the Student Council arranged the yearly summer conference at the conference hotel Sandvik gård located north of Norrköping. During three days, August 24-26, the PhD students gave poster sessions to present and discuss their projects, and lectures were given by senior researchers, Former Scientium members presented their experiences after exam and seminars were given in rhetorics and stress handling. The invited lecturers were: Lena Stånggren-Landberg, Stånggren AB, who had a workshop on Rhetorics Former Scientium member Johan Paulsson, Novo Nordisk AS Copenhagen, who presented his experiences from two post-docs at Scripps Research Institute and The Salk Institute both in San Diego, US. Former Scientium member Hanna Wessman, HemoCue AB, who presented her work Rune Olsson who had a workshop on Stress handling New this year was a competition called The Forum Scientium poster prize. Five senior researchers scrutinized the posters and three posters were awarded with a sum of money, primarily for training abroad: 1st prize: Klas Tybrandt 2nd prize: Erik Martinsson 3rd prize: Marie Oskarsson In addition, the jury gave special attention to three other posters for excellent presentations: Sebastian Schultz, Isa Lindgren, Kristin Persson Study visits During 2009, Forum Scientium made one international study visit (Dublin, May 20-22) and two local/national (Stockholm, April 17; Linköping, November 2) study visits, arranged by the Student Council together with Forum members making their mandatory assignments. Two Forum members also plan a study visit to Cambridge May See Appendices 5 and 6 for more information. 7 (47)

Monthly meetings Every fourth week Forum Scientium has meetings for all the PhD students and Transformers. Four PhD students present their projects, and are introduced by chairpersons (also PhD students). After the first two presentations there is a break for coffee, and at the end general information concerning courses, study visits, social events etc is given by the Programme Director, the Student Council and the assistant Director of Studies. Life science seminar series Forum Scientium is part of the initiative to have a seminar series within Life Science. During 2009, assistant professors David Engblom och Mattias Alenius were responsible for arranging the seminars. Researchers both from Linköping University and other universities in Sweden or abroad present their research, the goal being to contribute to a better network within Life Science. Time is every second Thursday at See Appendix 7 for more info. Forum Forum During the year, Forum Scientium arranged Forum Forum on March 25. For this event, four researchers were invited to present their research to inspire the attendants, PhD students and senior scientists, in finding new mulitidisciplinary collaborations. Invited speakers were: Per Ask - IMT Physiological Measurements Johan Ahlner - IMH Forensic Science and Toxicology Mattias Alenius IKE Neurobiology Edwin Jager ITN Organic Electronics After each presentation, time was reserved for discussion, and at the end there was time to mingle while enjoying a buffet. Christmas banquette Forum Scientium's yearly Christmas banquette for PhD students and supervisors took place on December 18. The banquette started in the afternoon with a debate with Anders Flodström, University Chancellor, on PhD-studies and their future development. The debate was followed by a common dinner in the pub at IFM. Courses Course plans, list of participators, etc, in Appendix 8. The PhD students in Forum Scientium follow many different categories of courses. One category is the general courses that are not specifically connected to a research subject area. In this category Forum Scientium traditionally has made efforts to have courses of high quality. Another very important category is the research area specific courses. Also here Forum Scientium initiates courses of high quality. Still Forum Scientium is limited to finance courses that are of interest for a group of Forum Scientium members, preferably more than 10 members. All the courses are always open for non-members. Forum Scientium students also follow courses given outside Forum Scientium, e.g. courses given at their departments, other universities, summer schools and work shops in connection with conferences, etc. The PhD students are encouraged to find the best courses in the world and use their backpacks to be able to follow them. 8 (47)

Courses partly or entirely financed by Forum Scientium during 2009: Intellectual Property as a Business Tool Modern biology for non-biologists Basic Management of Research Projects Introductory course in Scanning Probe Microscopy Statistical methods in experimental science Molecular Basis of Protein Conformational Diseases Courses not given during 2009: Organic Chemistry for non-chemists, every second year Fluorescence, every third year Fluorescence advanced, every third year Creativity for beginners, on demand Highly recommended courses that are given every year are: Entrepreneurship - Theory and Practice Scientific Publishing Bioethics and Research Ethics Interactions in Biomolecular Systems We are also striving to have a course in Leadership especially developed for PhD students. The demand for a specific volume of courses is different in the respective research areas. Most of them demand a volume of 60 hp that corresponds to one year of studies. Within the faculty of Health Sciences the minimum demand is around 34 hp. Establishment of PhDs A comparison with PhDs outside Forum Scientium The Swedish Foundation for Strategic Research (SSF) presented in the end of 2009 a follow-up report on PhD students admitted to SSF research programmes started The survey was carried out during the last quarter of 2008, and PhD students within the different SSF programmes were compared to a control group consisting of persons with a PhD degree from Some of the results were: The gross (brutto) time to exam was shorter for SSF PhDs compared to the control group. More of the SSF PhDs work within industry More of the SSF PhDs say that their education was highly relevant Especially female SSF PhDs regarded to be part of a SSF-programme higher compared with the control group The average gross time needed (brutto, including teaching, parental and other reasons for leave) for a PhD was 5.2 years for PhD students in the SSF programmes, compared to 5.8 years for the control group (statistically significant). The time stipulated for PhD studies is four years not 9 (47)

counting teaching and parental or other leave of absence. This net time is very near to four years for the PhDs within Forum Scientium (around 48.1 months). The same survey reports that 46 % of the PhDs from the SSF programmes were established in the private sector (industry) and 33 % were employed at a university (in Sweden or abroad). In the control group 37% were established in the private sector. The establishment figures can be compared to an earlier report by the Swedish National Agency for Higher Education, presented in the beginning of It reports the establishment year 2003 of persons who received a PhD exam in the year Altogether 85% were established. PhDs within Engineering and Medicine had an establishment of 92% and 91% respectively. In these figures, post docs and persons active outside Sweden are not counted and it is unclear how persons on parental leave are counted. Place of employment for previous PhD students As a way to further develop Forum Scientium, the PhD students that have left Forum Scientium have founded Former Scientium. This is used as a way to keep the network formed during the studies alive. The updated information about current positions and telephone numbers is found on the home page ( ). Former students are invited to the summer conference, study visits, and other activities arranged within Forum Scientium. Research administrator Susann Årnfelt handles the detailed information like and home addresses of all former PhD students. See Appendix 9 for a list of present place of employment for earlier PhD students. Collaboration and prepostdoc programme AgoraLink Since October 2007 and until September 2011 Forum Scientium together with the doctoral programme within the Center for Medical Image Science and Visualization (CMIV) has funding from Vinnova to run a doctoral programme within Biomedical Engineering. The programme encompasses especially funding for courses developed for participators from industry and from hospitals, and of course also for the participating PhD students. Examples of courses are: Modern Biology for non-biologists Medical signal analysis Biosensor technology SIMON - School of In Vivo Magnetic Resonance Relaxation Medical Engineering for personalised healthcare Microcirculation Entrepreneurship Another important part is the spinning programme where the PhD students work from two weeks to two months in two periods, one in the industry and one at a laboratory of highest international standard abroad. Altogether 22 PhD students are members of AgoraLink. From Forum Scientium the following seven PhD students participate in AgoraLink: Fredrik Agholme, Sara Helander, Linda Andrén, Emma Eriksson, Erik Martinsson, Sara Bergstrand, Linda Rattfält. 10 (47)

International collaboration - Marie Curie Forum Scientium and the competence centre S-SENCE (Swedish Sensor Centre, or Centre for bio- and chemical sensor science and technology) were during appointed by the European Commission as a Marie Curie Training Centre with the name Forum Scientium Sensing Science Training Centre ( ) and as a Marie Curie Early Stage Training Site with the name Sensing Forum ( ). Through this activity, 28 PhD students from countries in both EU and the rest of the world have had the opportunity to do training for 4-24 months in a research group at LiU. From 2010 we will have a new Marie Curie programme SEACOAT. It is an Initial Training Network (ITN) with eight nodes in UK, Germany, Switzerland, Italy and Sweden. It is coordinated by University of Birmingham. In Linköping, we will have one postdoc during 18 months (starting March 1, 2010) and two PhD students financed three years within the programme (starting during end of spring 2010). The PhD students will be members of Forum Scientium. Stefan Klintström will be the Director of Training for the whole network. The Forum Scientium award Transformer a prepostdoc programme The award aims at promoting the future career for the awardees and to stimulate the multidisciplinarity within Forum Scientium. It should also be of benefit for the active PhD students within Forum Scientium. The awardees should therefore be active within at least two Forum Scientium research groups, and he or she should assist within their specialities to all PhD students within the network. The latest announcement can be found in Appendix 10. During the transformer period Forum Scientium will provide SEK per month during a period of maximum 12 months as part of the costs for the salary. This was initially, during 2008, enough for 50% of the costs, but with the new economical system starting 2009, also an overhead of 32% is added to the costs. This means that the contribution only is enough for around 35% of the costs for 12 months, or 50% for 9 months. From start, the following persons have benefited from the award: Name Period Andreas Eriksson * Daniel Aili Olle Andersson * Veronica Borutinskaite * Karin Almstedt Lars Faxälv Janosch Hennig Magnus Baumgardt Jonas Carlsson Pernilla M Eliasson Karin Vretenberg Öberg Tobias Ekblad Caroline Skoglund * The first group of awardees were able to apply for a prolongation after the first 12-month period. (Parental leave is compensated for.) 11 (47)

The transformer programme has been financed with an accumulated surplus from earlier years. With these 13 awardees altogether ksek has been used for transformers and the amount left for further transformer awards is very limited. The plan is therefore that we will apply for more money to be able to continue this very successful programme. Efforts made to inform about the programme and the research and recruit students Home page The home page is managed by the PhD students and the programme administration through the Student Council. Web-address Manager Telephone address Mikael Pihl webmaster-fs@ifm.liu.se Media During the years, articles in magazines, newspapers and TV-programmes have been published, both on Forum Scientium as a doctoral programme, and on the research done by the PhD students. Announcements During spring 2009 we had two announcements, one in Dagens Nyheter, and one in Ny Teknik. The announcements can be found in Appendix 11. The Marie Curie Early Stage Training Centres was announced within the European Commission and to our research collaborators within Europe during November and December Programme administration Forum Scientium is led by a management group that consists of the chairperson of the Scientific Advisory Council (Ingemar Lundström), the programme director (Stefan Klintström), the assistant director of studies and the research administrator (Susann Årnfelt). In addition, the Student Council is very actively involved in the management of the doctoral programme. Scientific advisory council The role of the Scientific Advisory Council is to take the responsibility for the scientific programme of Forum Scientium. The reason for this is the multidisciplinary nature of Forum, which requires expertise in several fields for a successful research programme. The chairperson of the Scientific Advisory Council works actively within Forum Scientium in close collaboration with the programme director. More specifically: The Scientific Advisory Council is intended to be a discussion partner for Student Council and the Management group In questions of great importance, the advice from the council should always be asked for The council will get economical reports, but will not make decisions on budget, etc. The council will make efforts to get continued funding for Forum Scientium 12 (47)

Student Council The Student Council meets approximately every eight weeks to discuss issues of common interest and to plan for coming activities. The council is formed by the students and serves as a continuous contact between the programme director and the students. A student may only belong to the council for one year. Besides taking care of problems and suggestions regarding the doctoral programme, this council is responsible for a number of activities within Forum Scientium like seminar series, contacts with industry, programmes and newspapers, arrangements of symposia, home pages, study visits, etc. The Student Council is very important for Forum Scientium since it focuses on the fact that a successful activity is the responsibility of the PhD-students. Special working tasks In connection to some tasks with high workload, eg study visits, summer conference, extra PhD students will be assigned. See Appendix 12 for lists of members of the programme administration. Programme quality assurance Forum Scientium does not have a formal and permanent external advisory board. Instead, regular and constant self-evaluations form an important part of the quality programme. Each student turns in a progress report three times a year. The Student Council regularly evaluates courses and activities in Forum Scientium in collaboration with the programme director and the research secretary. Each student has an individual meeting, at least once a year, with the programme director of Forum Scientium to discuss the progress of his/her work, and how the activities of Forum Scientium can be improved. Half time assessment is a review of the thesis project by an external evaluator. The summer conference always ends with a self-monitoring of the summer conference and of Forums activities during the last year. Since external research councils finance almost all projects within Forum Scientium, an independent scientific quality assurance is obtained. The relevance of the study programme of Forum Scientium is assured by the many contacts with industry. The overall quality of a doctoral programme should be judged on the quality of the research made by its students and on the performance and career of the PhDs examined. 13 (47)

Economic report From 2005, Forum Scientium is financed by Rector, the Faculty of Engineering and Science, and the individual researchers (supervisors). During the years 2008 until 2012 Forum Scientium also have funding from the Swedish Research Council (VR), ksek a year. The contribution from the supervisors is SEK per PhD student per year. The VR contribution makes it possible to increase the level of activities. Especially it makes it possible to have even more high quality courses and workshops. The details of the economic report are given in Appendix 13. In short: Faculty project From ,8 milj kr Faculty money + 1,3 milj kr Member fees + 0,5 milj kr Transformer programme - 1,3 milj kr Backpacks - 0,3 milj kr Other costs - 0,5 milj kr To ,5 milj kr Unpaid backpacks - 1,0 milj kr To 2010 (in reality) + 1,5 milj kr (During ,1 milj kr is budgeted for the Transformer programme.) 16 Appendix 1. Short description of the activities within Forum Scientium (More info can be found at Forum Scientium seminars (FS-seminars) Every fourth Wednesday (even week numbers) at four PhD students present their research projects and groups to make it possible to increase the common use of competence, ideas, methods and instrumentation. All PhD students should attend the meetings (except if you have less than six months left till your defence). Student Council The Student Council meets every eighth week to discuss issues of common interests and to plan for coming activities. The council is formed by the PhD students and serves as the continuous contact between the programme director and the students. Besides taking care of problems and suggestions regarding the doctoral programme, this council is responsible for a number of activities within Forum Scientium like, study visits at industry and academia, arrangements of symposia, home pages, FS-seminars, evaluation of courses, etc. The Student Council is very important for Forum Scientium since it focuses on the fact that a successful activity is not only a responsibility of the management but also of the students. All PhD students should be members of the Student Council during one year, or make their workload in some other way, e.g. by arranging a study visit. Project Preparatory Paper (PPP) Written description of the planned research project of the student, containing background and motivation for the project, a literature search, a goal description and speculative visions. The student will work with the PPP during approximately the first nine months. A report will be presented and discussed at a seminar 9-12 months after start. Progress report The report is primarily written as a part of the PhD students planning of the research project. Secondly, it is made as a part of the communication between the PhD-student and the supervisor. For some this is new, and for some of you this is routine. The experience of earlier Forum-members is that it helped them during their PhD-time, and was useful as they started to work outside the university where reporting every month is routine in e.g. the pharmacological industry. It is made three times a year. At the same time each PhD students home page should be updated. Common courses Forum Scientium arranges courses. Most of them are chosen individually by the PhD student and the supervisor. Every PhD student should follow the course Basic Management of Research Projects, 1,5 hp, and in total FScourses of least 4,5 hp. Yearly individual follow-up On a yearly basis, the programme director meets each PhD student to discuss how Forum Scientium could be improved. At the same time, the PhD students progress is monitored. The objective with this is to make the PhD student even more aware of her/his responsibility for the progress of the project. Half-time assessment After 2,5-3 years a half-time assessment is done. PhD students at the faculty of Health Sciences make their halftime control instead. Final dissertation plan After the half-time assessment or half-time control, a specific time plan is made and attached to the following progress reports. Summer conference Every year in August, the Student Council arranges a summer conference during appr three days. During this time, there will be presentations from invited supervisors and other interesting persons. There will also be a number of poster presentations giving the PhD students the possibility to discuss each other s projects and results. All PhD students should attend this. Study visits The doctoral programme Forum Scientium, Linköping University, has since its start 1996 made several study visits to mainly companies and also some research departments in Stockholm, Uppsala, Gothenburg, Copenhagen, Helsinki, Oslo, Munich, Cambridge, Oxford and Dublin. By experience, we know that around 70% of the PhDs will have their professional career outside academia. Therefore, the study visits are an important part in the career planning for the PhD students. Another objective is 16 (47)

that the PhD students during these study visits learn to know each other more and thereby the potential for twinning and support between the PhD students are increased. Note in dissertation that PhD student has been a member of Forum The following note is included in the thesis, normally on the page following the title page: During the course of the research underlying this thesis, N. N. was enrolled in Forum Scientium, a multidisciplinary doctoral programme at Linköping University, Sweden. The PhD student is also registered as a Forum Scientium student in forskar-ladok. Backpack Each Forum member has a backpack of SEK per year. The backpack should be used for the doctoral studies e.g. conferences, summer schools, external courses, course literature, etc. Notice! All participation in conferences or courses has to be approved by the supervisor in advance. The course literature will be a property of the department. The costs should be approved in advance. Contact Susann Årnfelt and discuss with her how to do in each individual case. To get your backpack there is a need for more than 60% attendance at the Forum seminars, to make your Forum workload and other mandatory things. At the day of your defence the backpack will be zeroed. INFOrum A quarterly newsletter with presentations of research projects, Former Forum-members, study visits and upcoming activities. Life Science Seminars Every second week a research seminar within the Life Science area is presented by senior scientists from LiU and outside. Forum Forum Forum Forum is an informal come together event where ideas about future collaboration projects can be born. By talking to PhD students and senior researchers, and by listening to the visions of other research groups, we (Forum Scientium) hope that the attendants will find inspiration and opportunities to start up joint multi-disciplinary research projects. Membership fee from Supervisors Each supervisor contributes financially with SEK per student and year. Individual adaptations are made 17 (47)
