April 2016 Holy Tables, Meals and Meetings Cross View s 34th annual Christian Art Festival will begin on Sunday, April 10, and run through May 8. The festival includes a juried exhibit of local Christian artists, as well as a featured traveling exhibit by CIVA (Christians in the Visual Arts) titled COME TO THE TABLE. This featured exhibit gives us a creative sampling of meals we share as people of faith. The following contains excerpts by one of the exhibit s curators, Cameron Anderson, Executive Director of CIVA. Eating with others can be an intimate business. From Genesis to Revelation, a narrative thread of meals and feasts figures importantly in God story: Abraham hosts three visiting angels (the Trinity); God provides manna and quail for the Israelites as they wander in the wilderness; God employs ravens to feed Elijah; Jesus first miracle is to provide fine wine at the wedding feast in Cana; Jesus join His disciples for supper at Emmaus; and then He prepares an early morning breakfast for them on the shores of Galilee. But, supremely, it is the Marriage Feast of the Lamb (Revelation 19:9) that serves to bring a triumphant and glorious conclusion to the story of God reconciling His people and all of Creation to Himself. This past week, 10 Cross View youth took their first communion during the Maundy Thursday service; on Easter morning we together celebrated the Lord s Supper. If the axis of our gathering at the Lord s Table is horizontal, then our meeting with God as we eat the bread and drink the cup is vertical. Together, these axes are COME TO THE TABLE A T RAVELING EXHIBIT cruciform, the horizontal bisecting the vertical so that, in coming as God s People to God s Table, we stand beneath the cross of His Son. We come to God s Holy Table emptyhanded our right-standing before Him based squarely on Christ s wholly adequate and gracious sacrifice for us. We received God s invitation both to sacrifice and suffering to take up our own cross each day and to celebrate the grace that we have received. In this we enjoy fellowship and solidarity with all of the saints those past, present, and future. Meeting God at His table, we are renewed and united in one body, one Spirit, one hope, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, and one God who is the Father of us all. In response, God s Holy Meal equips us to sit at the table not only with friends, but also with our enemies to become those who love peace, labor for fidelity, and strive that all who bear God s image may flourish. PAGE 2 EasterFest Celebration Welcomes 250+ Visitors EasterFest on Saturday, March 19, welcomed over 250 visitors from our community. Five scenes from Holy Week were acted by costumed characters, along with crafts, story-time, refreshments, a petting zoo and an Easter egg hunt. This year we also raised awareness of two local ministries that we partner with in our community with a craft and a food drive (VEAP and Sheridan s Story). The pictures tell how fun the morning was! Thanks to all volunteers who helped in countless ways. God continues to richly bless our 7th and 8th grade students as they Connect, Grow, and Serve through confirmation. On February 10, two of our seventh grade students made presentations following the Ash Wednesday worship service. They shared details with regard to service projects that they planned and carried out in the community. It s amazing to ponder the impact that these young people continue to make year after year. During the Sundays of Lent, twelve of Cross View s 8th grade Confirmation Update students gave their testimonies during worship. Our congregation was privileged to hear these students share their personal testimonies of faith. Students not only shared what Jesus relationship means to them now, but what it will mean for them moving forward. Every student did a remarkable job! Confirmation Sunday is May 1 at the 10:45 a.m. service. Please keep these young students in your prayers as they reach this important milestone and enter into a new season of Christian growth and development.

Cross View Votes to Add Associate Pastor! A special Voters Assembly meeting was held on Sunday, February 28, 2016 to vote on a single topic the calling of Vicar Tobias Schmidt as Associate Pastor. Scott Douglas, chair of the Associate Pastor Call Committee, brought forward the unanimous recommendation of the 12 members of the Call Committee to extend a call to Vicar Toby. Having observed his impressive vicarage at Cross View since July, the members of the committee felt he would be a great fit as our long-sought Associate Pastor. The 139 Voting Members present at the meeting voted unanimously in favor of extending the call to Vicar Toby! In addition to it being an overwhelming decision, it was an overwhelming vote of confidence in Vicar Toby, who has demonstrated exceptional capabilities teaching, preaching, and leading mission ministries as our vicar. We thank God for His guidance throughout our process of searching for an Associate Pastor, and we celebrate this decision as God s people! Toby and his family were hoping for this outcome, and it would be very rare for a seminary graduate to not accept his first call. While these hints can probably lead us to make a happy inference, we need to respect that this is a Divine Call deserving Toby s prayerful consideration. We can be confident that Toby s final decision will be according to God s will. Most seminary students complete their vicarage in the third year, and then they return to the seminary campus for one more year and would normally be available to accept a call Ten of Cross View s students completed a seven-week course in preparation for their first communion. The class was held on Sunday mornings with both students and parents attending. The class also incorporated faith formation that took place in the home each week with their parents. Discussions, memory work, weekly worksheets, and interactive activities contributed to the overall learning after graduation in May. However, Toby is a deferred vicar, so he completed all his coursework in the first three years on campus and he is now completing his vicarage in his fourth and final year. This shifts the timing concerning our call a little bit. He will continue his 12-month vicarage beyond his graduation date in May. We are actually not able to officially extend the call to Toby until he completes all the requirements of his degree, including his vicarage, which will be done at the end of June. Our vote on February 28 will allow Toby to be recognized amongst his peers on Call Day in April as Pending Cross View, Edina, Minnesota. He will then graduate with his class in May, but continue his vicarage through June 30. We will then be able to officially extend the call to him on July 1 and wait for his answer after his prayerful consideration. Assuming he accepts, his title will transition from Vicar to Associate Pastor, and he will begin to accept more ownership of both the Adult Education and Outreach & Missions ministries at Cross View. I would like to thank the members of the Call Committee who have served with diligence and patience since September 2013 to find an Associate Pastor: Scott Douglas (chair), Tonya Bushey, Tim Clavin, Christine Eid, David Frauenshuh, Erik Kelly, Laurie Koch, Marian Kratzke, David Modrow, Deb Piepho, Brad Starr, and Pastor Wheeler. In service to Him, Gregg Poppe, Congregational President Welcome to the Lord s Table! experience. Parents and students capped off the class with a final celebration of learning (otherwise known as a final exam). Everyone did super! As a part of our Maundy Thursday service on March 24, these students received their first communion. We give thanks to the Lord for His precious meal, and we celebrate with these young students as we say, Welcome to the Lord s Table! PAGE 3 Redeeming Christmas Update How could anyone forget what by God s grace our congregation was able to accomplish this past Christmas? By making a few sacrifices we were able to raise over $110,000 for the purchase of life-saving equipment for the Tenwek Dental Clinic of Kenya. By changing up Christmas, we were able to change lives with a tremendous gift that will impact lives on the other side of the world for decades to come. Thank you for your amazing response and rich generosity! Since Christmas, Dr. Tim Clavin has been working with many people to coordinate the purchase, crating, and delivery of the equipment to Kenya. Thus far the equipment has been ordered from Patterson Dental of Minneapolis. Patterson Dental has been exceedingly helpful in the design of the clinic itself. They also have generously reduced the price on the equipment to maximize how much could be purchased. The shipment is expected to arrive in Minneapolis sometime in the first week of April. Dr. Clavin is currently coordinating with Samaritan s Purse to finalize plans for the shipment of the equipment to Kenya. Please lift this shipment in your prayers. There are many logistics involved with making a shipment like this overseas to a third world country. Here s how you can participate moving forward. Dr. Clavin is recruiting individuals from men s ministry, as well as others, to help him crate the equipment at Patterson Dental the week of April 18th. If you are interested in being a part of the crating team, please contact the church office, and we will alert Dr. Clavin. Finally, there will be a special blessing and commissioning of the equipment during Sunday worship at both services on April 24. This will be an opportunity for our congregation to ask God s blessing upon the equipment itself and to pray for its safe shipment. Thank you for changing up Christmas to change lives! It s amazing what God did and continues to do through the mission and ministry of God s people at Cross View.

PAGE 4 On March 6, we started streaming both our 8:15 and 10:45 services live on our website! We have had a great response to the streamed services. It was amazing to see all of the conversations that happened, friendships that were bolstered, new friendships made, and church family sitting down to have a meal together. What a blessing! Over the course of the 6 dinners we served 606 people and were able to raise $3115 dollars towards our trip. That is the equivalent of paying for 2.7 students to attend! Here are some of the memories that we created: EARLY CHILDHOOD CENTER Parent Lunch Day, Summer Camp, Requests for Picture Frames & Helping Hands ECC HOSTS PARENT LUNCH DAY Cross View s ECC invited our students parents to join us for lunch on March 9, 2016. Parent Lunch Day started with Chapel in the sanctuary led by Pastor Wheeler. After that, we all enjoyed a delicious lunch, prepared by our cook, Miss Holly. This year our menu took on an American theme as we served hamburgers, baked beans and bananas. It was a wonderful time to gather with our families. SPECIAL REQUEST: PICTURE FRAMES! ECC is in need of picture frames. We are collecting frames that are 5 x 7 or larger. The frames will be used for an art show and fundraiser. You can drop off the frames in either the church or school office. We need the frames by April 20th. Thank you. SUMMER SCHOOL AGED CAMP Summer School Aged Camp is for children that have finished kindergarten through fourth grade. Our program is unique in that due to our size and lower ratios, children receive individual attention and develop great friendships. Our program also has a faith based curriculum where the campers learn Bible stories with fun and interactive activities as well as attend Chapel at the center. Each week is set up with a different theme and you may choose the weeks you plan to attend. Field trips, special events, VBS & soccer are all included in the fee. Music Camp is also an option for an additional fee. Join us for a summer of Son-shine no matter what the weather. E-mail the center at ecc@crossview.net or call us at 952 941-0009 with questions. Thanks to everyone who PAGE 7 CROSSWAYS INTERNATIONAL CALLING An Australian Perspective, a Global Focus, and a Heart for Mercy As you know, the news media in the US is now devoting a lot of space and time to issues relating to refugees from the Middle East striving to relocate in European countries, Canada, and the US. In what follows, I share some information about what has taken place in my home country of Australia during the past two centuries. A British naval explorer, Captain James Cook, discovered the east coast of Australia in 1770. British people began migrating to Australia in 1778. Some of the first colonies were penal colonies. During their first decades in Australia, the British immigrants treated the local Aboriginal people in very cruel ways. In some cases, they hunted them down like rabbits, shot them, and pushed them off cliffs. Sad to say, many white Australians continued to treat the native Australians in bad ways. However, as time went by, Christian organizations established mission outposts and Christian schools to help the Aboriginal people in numerous ways. I thank God for the fact that at the beginning of the year 2000, the Australian government apologized to the Aboriginal people for what was done to them in those early years. has helped our children reach out around the world and show that they can make a difference. To learn more about the project, go to http://www.worldvision.org/our-impact/clean-water THANK YOU FROM CREEK VALLEY ELEMENTARY Dear Members of Cross View Lutheran Church, On behalf of the Creek Valley Elementary School staff and student body, a heartfelt THANK YOU for your compassion and generosity! Thanks to your financial commitment and volunteer hours, many hungry children at our school are now enjoying a well-rounded, substantial, and healthy meal on the weekend. The Sheridan Story is a non-profit organization that facilitates this process. They deliver food to our school in translucent plastic bags; one meal per bag that consists of a carbohydrate, protein, fruit, and vegetable; tuna and Tuna Helper with canned beans and peaches, perhaps. On the last day of each school week, typically Friday, your parishioners deliver those bags to students lockers. Family identity is held in the strictest confidence. Note that your church body also funds these provisions. Some might think that there is not a need for such a program in Edina, but I assure you, there is. Research shows that students achieve at higher levels when they don t suffer from hunger. Thanks for contributing to our learners academic success. Our school saying is GO MAD: Go out and make a difference. Thanks to your community outreach, you are living our motto! God Bless! Sincerely, Kari Dahlquist, Principal Creek Valley Elementary Chloris and I have continued to subscribe to The Lutheran magazine ever since we moved to the United States in 1979. We were delighted to note the global focus throughout the most recent edition of this publication: We must show mercy to needy people around the world including those who seek to take up residence in our country. After all, God made and owns Planet Earth and God has no genetic favorites.... These articles were written by the bishop of the Lutheran Church of Australia and a number of clergy and laypeople. I thank God that an Australian colleague recently launched a mission organization in Western Australia to teach God s Word to the Aboriginal people. Through the Timothy Training Ministry, he has received a grant to teach the Aboriginal people how to read and write, and as a part of that teaching will use CI s short courses to share the big story. He has also planted a new church in Meekatharra. His goal is to have a number of the indigenous young adults be part of these studies. Harry Wendt, President Crossways International
