ELW Setting Four, Page 148 Prayer of the Day Lord of life, direct our gaze toward what we need to see. Grant us the ability to attend to what truly matters. Amen. 3
Listening to God s Word Please be seated. First Lesson Psalm 89:1-4 1 I will sing of your steadfast love, O LORD, forever; with my mouth I will proclaim your faithfulness to all generations. 2 I declare that your steadfast love is established forever; your faithfulness is as firm as the heavens. 3 You said, "I have made a covenant with my chosen one, I have sworn to my servant David: 4 'I will establish your descendants forever, and build your throne for all generations.' The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God! + Gospel Acclamation + Gospel Reading Mark 12:28-34;42-44 The Holy Gospel according to St. Mark. Glory to you, O Lord. 28 One of the scribes came near and heard them disputing with one another, and seeing that he answered them well, he asked him, "Which commandment is the first of all?" 29 Jesus answered, "The first is, 'Hear, O Israel: the Lord our God, the Lord is one; 30 you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.' 31 The second is this, 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.' There is no other commandment greater than these." 32 Then the scribe said to him, "You are right, Teacher; you have truly said that 'he is one, and besides him there is no other'; 33 and 'to love him with all the heart, and with all the understanding, and with all the strength,' and 'to love one's neighbor as oneself,' this is much more important than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices." 34 When Jesus saw that he answered wisely, he said to him, "You are not far from the kingdom of God." After that no one dared to ask him any question. 4
42 A poor widow came and put in two small copper coins, which are worth a penny. 43 Then he called his disciples and said to them, "Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put in more than all those who are contributing to the treasury. 44 For all of them have contributed out of their abundance; but she out of her poverty has put in everything she had, all she had to live on." Please be seated. The Gospel of our Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. Message Blessed Are the Poor in Spirit Pastor Fred Hanson + Hymn of the Day You Are Mine ELW 581 5
+ Apostles Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. Responding to and Receiving God s Grace + Prayers of the People We pray for the church, the world, and all those in need. A brief silence. Whole and holy one, we come praying especially for what is broken in this world. Lord, in your mercy, Hear our prayer. We pray for all creation, which humanity too often strips of your glory in the pursuit of wealth. Grant us the ability to truly demonstrate our love for creation. Lord, in your mercy, Hear our prayer. We pray for those seeking to grow in understanding. Grant them the ability to see deeply the world around them, and from that knowledge, ask meaningful questions. Lord, in your mercy, Hear our prayer. We pray for those who have been taken advantage of by unjust policies and broken systems. We pray for those who are in a position to help those in need, that they, too may understand the meaning of your kingdom come. We pray for those who need relief from suffering (especially). Lord, in your mercy, Hear our prayer. 6
We pray that as we love you individually, we may also be led to love you and our neighbor with the whole of the church s being, practicing our faith with intelligence, strength and heart. Lord, in your mercy, Hear our prayer. Here other petitions may be offered. In Christ s name we pray. Amen. Sharing Christ s Peace Offering Do you want to make a donation, but don t have cash or checkbook handy? Scan the QR code with a smartphone to make a donation with your debit or credit card. Music During Offering Call to Lent Adult Choir + Offertory Prayer God our provider, you have not fed us with bread alone, but with words of grace and life. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen. Communion 8
Hymn During Communion Come, Ye Disconsolate ELW 607 9
Hymn During Communion Just As I Am, Without One Plea ELW 592 Post Communion Prayer O God, we thank you for gathering and feeding us as a mother hen embraces her young. Release us now to go on our way in these forty days, ready to see our work as prayer, ready to fast from complacency, and ready to share with those in need; through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen. Sending and Going to Serve Blessing The blessing of God Almighty, the wisdom and power of Christ Jesus, and the light of the Holy Spirit be among you and remain with you always. Amen. 10
